[Letter] [19]03 July 24, Piedmont, (Ca.) [to] Charles Warren [Stoddard] / Jack London.

See also the Jack London Papers at the Huntington Library, including a group of letters from London to Stoddard (http://www.huntington.org/LibraryDiv/jlpapers.html). London states that he recognized Cloudesley's mother (Jenny MacKaye Johns Peet) in "Little Mama," and that he knew that Paul was Stoddard (Cloudesley Johns was London's friend and correspondent, "Little Mama" and Paul were both characters in _For the Pleasure of his Company_, the only novel written by Stoddard, who was also known for his poetry and travel writing). London declares that _Dane Kempton_ was written by Anna Strunsky, "the most brilliant woman I have ever known." The anonymity was bound to be spoiled, he concludes, for "we were too well known on the coast" (London and Strunsky collaborated on the _Kempton-Wace Letters_ , 1901-02, an epistolary discussion of the meaning and nature of love; London had met Strunsky, a San Francisco socialist in 1899). London promises to send _A Call of the Wild_ and _Children of the Frost_ to complete Stoddard's file of London's works. He signs his letter, "With all the love in the world, and a man's love-- JL." London wrote novels and short stories at the turn of the century, setting his scenes mostly in the Klondike (where he had himself participated in the gold rush from 1897-98) and at sea, using his background as an oyster-harvester and a sailor aboard a sealing schooner. London also published in periodicals, wrote socialist essays, and made a voyage across the Pacific.
