includ ing five saxophones four trombones three trumpets d turns and siring bass he handles the piano solos him self in one of his first eastern ap pearances since completing two movies in hollywood kenneth spencer negro basso will be guest soloist on friday at 8 p.m in grace hall in the next of the current scl series spencer better known as big name among negro singers to day has given recitals in town hall and carnegie hall he also ralp flanagan the piano-play ing bandleader and his orchestra have accepted ifc's invitation to play at houseparty dance friday may 4 according to bill smith publicity chairman for the house party dance committee along with flanagan george sommer is slated to play on the upper floor of grace hall rela tively new group it will feature his rhythm and rhyme in summertime hailed by the nation's disc jockeys and record fans as the man who was instrument al in reviving dance band ralph flanagan featured with flanagan are his two singers hope zee who has her own particular style of sing ing and harry prime in an effort to perfect his ar see ralph page 7 while a capacity audience heard the third portion of the music festival on the lower level of grace hall saturday night thieves were at work in the glee club dressing room on the third floor a partial list of the missing articles compiled by a ques tioning of glee club members by telephone on sunday re vealed that the culprits suc ceeded in making off with one tuxedo one pair of tuxedo trousers several var sity letter sweaters borrowed for the performance 38 in cash several german beer steins and a checkbook in addition a women's purse belonging to sharon harkey of the lehigh valley symphony or chestra was stolen from the band room the purse contained keys a checkbook and 20 in cash prof dr gipson will be granted a leave of absence from lehigh during the 1951 1952 academic year to serve as harold vyvan harmsworth professor of american his tory at oxford university before coming here lehigh 20,000 the late walter i nevius a graduate of the class of 1912 has willed 20,000 to lehigh univer sity as a new trust fund for out standing graduates nevius a native of west grove pa was a retired mechan ical and chemical engineer the will provides that awards of 400 and 500 will be made yearly to the young man who shall give promise of leading a useful life as evidenced by his virility gentility patriotism hon esty integrity and scholarship lu squadron of arnold air society named in honor of late major cheli lehigh music festival is termed successful in honor of major ralph cheli lehigh 41 who was awarded ihe congressional medal of honor posthumously for outstanding service in vorld war ji the members of the newly-formed arnold air society have named their unit the cheli squadron palevicz lists placement of 136 ingineers seniors in the engineering col lege placed in jobs now total 136 according to statistics compiled by frank v palevicz assistant director of the placement bureau this is less than one-half of 325 seniors who have applied for placement bureau services in addition to those placed 74 offers have been made to other seniors who have not yet decided to accept or decline palevicz said he asks those who have accept ed jobs to leave information at the bureau this applies to any one who has secured employ ment whether he has been aided by the bureau or has received the job through his own efforts pale vicz added by curricular subdivision the employment statistics are palevicz stated that 63 february graduates are now working for dollars instead for these characters the faculty wives chorus and the cast have been holding re hearsals this past week in lhe chapel under the direction oi prof h barrett davis performances are at 4 p.m and 7:30 p.m nearly 3,000 filed out of the student-built theater one of the highlights of the evening came when percy l sadler director of lehigh athletics took his hat off to the football team in part 111 of the show down in the valley warren t jones took the male lead and laurel milne a student at moravian college for women filled the feminine lead for saturday eve ning's performance jeanette rhodes also of moravian starred in friday evening's show part i featuring songs of many peoples included spirituals and popular music of european countries georges enesco's roumanian rhapsody completed the first section of the festival although financial figures have not yet been totaled receipts were well over the amount re quired to meet the budget ac cording to lawrene d edson business director herbert c
