the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 44 tuesday april 11 2006 all the lehigh news first initial interest meager for class officer spots by chris knight assistant news editor all but one of the candidates for the 14 class officer positions were running unopposed on thursday until the office of stu dent and young alumni pro grams granted a one-day regis tration extension because of the low registration after extending the due date to friday at 4 p.m students reg istered to oppose candidates for all but three positions said nancy merritt assistant director of student and young alumni programs the three positions remain ing unopposed are president vice president and secretary for the class of 2007 before the due date was extended there was no candi date for class of 2007 treasurer class officers serve as student leaders participate in communi ty service activities and host fund-raising events for the senior class gift according to lehigh's alumni web site merritt said she wasn't sure why students didn't register but thought the four o'clock quizzes that overlapped with required information sessions may have contributed to the lack of inter est if officers run for a position without any opponents they only need to meet minimum academic and social require ments set by the alumni office merritt said the earlier schedule planned for students to register at a mandatory information session on april 3 but after the first meeting's low turnout the office of student and young alumni programs hosted another infor mation session the next day only after the registration dead lines passed did the office send the student body an e-mail extending the due date merritt said they tried to advertise the positions to stu dents research daniel ellsberg to speak tonight by john flenders news writer daniel ellsberg a former governmental strategic analyst who leaked top-secret informa tion to the media in the 1970s that led to the publication of the pentagon papers will speak tonight at 8 p.m in packard laboratory auditorium ellsberg has been an anti war activist since he spoke out about the vietnam war in the 19605 he will speak about the iraq war and its relation to the vietnam war tonight brian pinaire assistant pro fessor of political science said he is excited about ellsberg's visit mr ellsberg is one of the most critical historical figures of the last 40 years and lehigh is quite lucky to be hosting him pinaire said leslie baum assistant to pinaire said the purpose of ellsberg's lecture is to remind us of the atrocities of the vietnam war he will remind us of the mistake we made in history drag performers support lgbtqa by margaret martin news writer eight professional drag per formers and five cross-dressed students took the stage in lehigh's second annual drag show illusions thursday night to raise money for pride of the greater lehigh valley pride was formed in 1993 by members of lehigh valley's gay lesbian bisexual transgender and intersex com munity pride's mission is to pro mote integration and accept ance for individuals of all sex ual orientations and gender identities jeff antsen 09 spectrum's event coordinator said he was glad to see illusions in its sec ond year it's a fun educational way for lehigh to experience diversity in action antsen said todd campbell 09 a spe cial events director of university productions agreed the illusions drag show provides an opportunity for b&w photo by bj shlpart people to express themselves in a creative way campbell said a professional drag per former alexis wore a large curly red wig and tight black pants as she sang along to tina turner's don't leave me this way one creative performance included five cross-dressed students who performed to aqua's barbie girl dave thompson 06 pres ident of up said a lot of work went into planning the illusions drag show since about february i have been working with jeff and spectrum to cover as many bases as possible in orchestrating this event thompson said the illusions performance was held in honor of lesbian gay bisexual transgender questioning and allied awareness month illusions was co-sponsored by spectrum up leadership ' lehigh the black student union the office of multicul tural affairs student affairs and sigma phi epsilon frater nity a drag queen
