the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 21 tuesday november 22 2005 all the lehigh news first lafayette wins in final seconds by mark ethe sports writer in front of a sold-out crowd at goodman stadium saturday the 141 st meeting between lehigh university and lafayette college ended with a last-minute touchdown by lafayette to shatter the mountain hawks hopes of extending their season the leopards had the ball on lehigh's 37-yard line on fourth and 10 there were 46 left on the clock the score board read hawks 19 leopards 17 the leopards senior quar terback pat davis took the snap and it looked as though he would be sacked and lehigh would be the victor he dodged a tackle and threw deep as the stadium held its collective breath the ball came down in the hands of junior running back jonathan hurt for a touch down that put the leopards ahead for good it was a flat route but i saw pat davis get into trou ble so i started streaking and he made a perfect throw hurt said disbelief struck the crowd of 16,017 while it watched lehigh made a last feeble attempt to regain the lead with 38 remaining it was to no avail lafayette senior defensive back larry johnson picked off lehigh's sophomore quarter back sedale threatt with 13 seconds remaining to cap the leopards victory after holding onto first place for most of the season the hawks had relinquished their playoff hopes in the final minute of the final game lafayette went on to win co-champion status along with the colgate university raiders both of whom will be playing next week in the division 1-aa playoffs lehigh's crushing defeat at b&w photo by john conner lafayette pulled off a dramatic win in the wanning seconds of the fourth quarter senior quarterback pat davis threw a prayer and junior running back jon hurt answered it lafayette is now playoff bound performances honor history of steel site by nicole nigro news writer ten years after the closing of bethlehem steel students faculty and bethlehem com munity members performed and watched creative presenta tions on nov 19 in commem oration of the history of the steel site the event was titled remembering the last cast b&wphoto by jeffrey kauffman at bethlehem steel a community reflects as it forges its future graduate students amey senape and andrea obertin organized the event through the history department george miller and kate scuffle directed the event which featured six songs about steelworkers by lehigh valley students faculty and community members commemorated the history of the steel site with creative presentations food flags dance define international celebration by emily smith and kati noderer news writers bill hunter head of the global union called the 32 international week events that occurred between nov 9 and 17 a tremendous suc cess all colleges do something similar but nobody does any thing as big hunter said the global union worked with various student clubs and academic departments to organize the fourth annual international week parade of flags the international parade of flags on nov 9 at noon included flags of the 60 coun tries represented by students on campus students were chosen to hold the flags of their home countries the parade began outside of coxe hall ran along the new t walkway and ended in the upper university center the office of international student services sponsored the parade festivus more than 11 clubs partici pated in festivus an eat-a thon with an international smorgasbord of foods held on nov 12 in ulrich student center chiaki okuyama 08 a rep resentative from the japanese language club said the food was consumed quickly we ran out of food really fast in comparison to last year okuyama said satiesh muniandy 06 said she liked sampling all of the foods all the food was good but my favorite was the baklava from the muslim student association muniandy said a disc jockey played music from various cultures lauren anderson 08 said she enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere i came to experience other cultures but i stayed because the food was good and the music was peppy anderson said the clubs participating in fesu'vus included the african caribbean cultural club muslim student association progressive students alliance foni cultur al literary magazine indian students association hellenic club japanese language club salsa and spectrum diwali more than 400 people attended the diwali festival of lights in baker hall at zoellner arts center on nov 13 this is the biggest turnout see football page 14 see celebration page 5 see steel page 2 vv r/#7 pdqg 16 lehigh-lafayette week a mixed bag page 8
