6 sig ep urges non-greeks to fight against cancer by desiree annunziato news writer sigma phi epsilon fraterni ty hosted a luncheon for non greek organizations on friday to urge them to join the good scholar election evan gyllenhaal 06 chairman of the good scholar election fred zamparelle 08 assistant chair of the elec tion and former professor dr cohen presented the ideas and process behind the good scholar election gyllenhaal zamparelle and cohen asked non-greek organizations to join the fight against cancer by electing candidates to represent their groups the main objective of the election raising money to help the fight against cancer was discussed in great detail at the luncheon it is now the number one killer cohen said it has surpassed heart disease cohen said one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer at one point in their lives even though 66 percent of people diagnosed survive which is an increase from pre vious years five million peo ple were diagnosed with can cer in 2002 the hosts of the luncheon compared the tragedy of hurricane katrina to the dev astation of cancer and the horrific effects it has on the diagnosed and their families both the effects of the hurri cane and cancer are of great magnitude but cancer is an ongoing problem that claims new lives on a continuous basis and is omnipresent for those it affects the hosts said cohen urged the non greek organizations to be cre ative with their fundraising ideas he also told them to recognize that it will inevitably be harder for non greeks to collaborate and brainstorm because they don't see each other on a reg ular basis as greeks do he urged the students to join the effort and do something and feel good students were given pack ets with information on how to join the cause cancer statis tics from previous years and fundraising ideas please join us in the ongo ing fight against cancer by helping to fund the research that brings hope and poten tially cures to millions of vic tims and their loved ones gyllenhaal said in his closing remarks this year will mark the six teenth year of the election which most recently has been taken over by sig ep groups of both greek and non-greek organizations set up fundraisers around campus in order to raise as much money as possible for the american cancer society the candidate from the organization who raises the most money and gets the most votes is named the good scholar the election will run dur ing the second and third weeks of november ending on the date of the lehigh lafayette football game money from each group is due by nov 28 senate seeks to reverse apathy drafts six goals by christie jephson news writer members of student senate said apathy is holding the lehigh community back and students should get involved in the senate's goals for the year which include the cre ation of a new student center the students on this cam pus need to stop being so apa thetic toward everything senator amy nolf 08 said they have a complaint about something but they don't voice their opinion to anyone who can start to create change that is what senate is for student senate president kip wallen 06 said all stu dents can attend senate meet ings we hold meetings every other tuesday at 4 p.m in kenner theater wallen said they are open for all stu dents to attend but students who are not in senate rarely show up when an idea or suggestion is brought to the lehigh administration the first thing administrators ask is whether there is student support for the idea wallen explained e mailing your concerns to the senate and filling out surveys sent through campus e-mail will help wallen said the administration takes surveys very seriously nolf said if students would take five minutes to fill them out instead of deleting them the administration will see what really needs to be done each survey makes a difference at the annual student senate retreat held in alexandria va last weekend senators spent time creating six goals for the 2005-06 aca demic year this year's goals are huge said clark cohen 08 a member of student senate we are going to need a lot of student support to accomplish them clark is in charge of one of the biggest and most talked about goals a new student center this is really going to hap pen wallen said the administration came to me with plans for building a more effective student center they want to do this for us and they want to do it right wallen said there are no formal plans as of now but members of the senate would like to see the center include student resources such as mail boxes a post office tutoring centers club offices and stu dent areas senators also hope the new center will be located in a more central area with ample space for dining relax ing and mingling wallen said although the center is a long-term goal in its prelimi nary stages members of the senate said they are enthusias tic i'm excited about what senate has planned for this year nolf said we have a
