the brown and whtie lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 38 tuesday march 22 2005 all the lehigh news first traces wins battle of the bands by sean hasan lifestyle writer the pop-punk band kick over the traces won the battle of the bands competition saturday night in lamberton hall based out of new brunswick nj the band members won the vote with their loud guitars and drums and will now have the opportu nity to showcase their talents on a bigger stage when they perform at sundaze on april 16 also performing that day will be robbers on high street gomez and cake all part of the virgin college mega tour the battle featured six acts that were selected out of a field of 18 demos submitted by vari ous lehigh bands members of university production's music committee listened to the demos and the six most popu lar were selected to perform we weren't looking for anything in particular said barbie kitchell 06 coordina tor of battle of the bands everyone in up music got to vote i guess we were just look ing for talent the first act of the evening was gelsey bell 04 a solo performer she opened her set with love song in c major since performers were given a time slot of just thirty mm utes to set up and perform the summit street band hastily set up its equipment as soon as bell left the stage drummer eric winokur 06 said he was satisfied with the band's per formance we wanted to come here and play a good show and have a good time winokur said we think everyone had a great time and the crowd was really into it that's what it's all about after the summit street band even further a band with punk and ska influences took the stage even further got the crowd dancing in no time trumpeter justin manno was a crowd favorite because of his charismatic stage pres ence and his interaction with the fans he even put his trum pet down and danced with the rest of the crowd it was great to see the peo ple dancing manno said i feed off their energy it was a great show we just love to play anytime at any place much to the delight of the fans even further closed its set with a punk version of the little mermaid classic under the sea the winner of the thursday in east whitaker courtyard the demonstrations were supervised by the chemistry department speaker favors eco-friendly industries by lauren rieders news writer in celebration of earth day lehigh's environmental initiative hosted a discussion in packard lab on wednesday with kathleen a mcginty secretary of the pennsylvania department of environmental protection on how businesses should consider approaches that protect both environment and economic growth mcginty is the former chair of the white house council on environmental quality and deputy assistant to president bill clinton she has tried to share her mission to go after environ mental problems and see eco nomic opportunity in disguise with the 3,000 colleges in the pennsylvania dep americans must embrace environmental challenges to find economic advantages that benefit industries mcginty said mcginty said her mission is not to deprive people of jobs or to end economic activity but to embrace environmental challenges to find our econom ic future businesses should act in the best interests of the environ ment to protect it and develop industry mcginty said she categorizes her experi ence with dealing with the business community in solving environmental problems into the 3ds dumb deny delay these rules come from her experience in working with companies that do not want to acknowledge the problem take responsibility or rush into taking action the ignorance and denial of industries in tak ing action can present a seri ous problem for the environ ment she said dork sahagian director of the environmental initiative and professor of earth and environmental science said he is intrigued by mcginty's phi losophy campus group fights sexual violence by kristen gerhard lifestyle editor nayla raad 07 and alex milspaw 07 are trying to stifle their anxiety they shuffle through scripts organize props and make small talk with their audience of first-year students who are trickling into a tiny room in price hall for their final choices and decisions class raad and milspaw are sexu al violence peer educators their group known as break the silence works out of the women's center and was formed in the spring of last year this is to be their first official program and the two group members have been working for weeks to prepare it's been a fun challenge because we know not everyone in that classroom wants to be there raad said so we've worked really hard to make sure the script is as informative as it is fun as the last few students arrive and take their seats milspaw and raad exchange a look acknowledging that it's time to begin they open fit tingly with silence isn't all that comfortable is it raad asks her uneasy audience after a minute that feels a good deal longer and
