the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 115 no 11 tuesday october 16 2007 all the lehigh news first flood in grace hall leads to mold relocates team by martina russial â– mold under floorboard discovered in may was caused by a leak in the air system facility services discovered mold in grace hall on may 29 after a leak in the building's heating ventilation and air conditioning system caused water to flood the floor of the lee man-turner arena in grace hall the leak had caused numerous floor boards to warp and buckle said gary falasca director of facil ity services and head of the grace hall construction project in an attempt to save the floor perimeter baseboards were removed around the floor and fans were run for one week to remove any excess moisture a similar procedure was used to preserve the floor in taylor gym after a leak however even after the pe rimeter baseboards in grace hall were removed the floor did not improve after a week with no improve ment to the floor a repair crew from b&wphoto by olivier lewis the company who installed the floor was brought in to begin removal of the damaged boards falasca said during the removal process mold was discovered on the bottom side of the plywood sub floor precautions were taken to protect students and staff after the mold was discovered lehigh's director of envi ronmental health and safety was brought in to take air samples which tested positive for mold falasca said these positive samples required the space to be the floor in grace hall was damaged by a leak last spring air samples tested positive for mold and the space was closed for cleanup the project should be completed by oct 28 new web site created to help housing search by allyson planders a new off-campus housing web site for bet ter student-landlord communication strives to make living off campus easier for students mike gioia 07 and his twin brother an drew created spotise.com in march 2007 spotsie.com is a web site where landlords can list properties available for rent students can also compare properties with their friends and save listings of properties they are inter ested in gioia lived off campus last year and said he has had good experiences he wanted to cre ate an easier way for students to see and com pare listings of rental properties according to the web site the creators want to make the off-campus housing search as painless as possible gioia said not only can students find rental properties immediately available but students can also start looking ahead and learn about landlords gioia said because spotsie.com is a new web site their main challenge is getting land lords to list so far nine landlords have listed with the site any landlord is allowed to list with the web site but students can post com ments under the listings to give their opinions of the landlord or rental property we want to bridge the gap between stu dents and landlords gioia said gioia said his next goal is to advertise the web site to students many students do not yet know about the web site because gioia wanted to contact landlords first gioia said the web site is targeted to le high students but also offers listings for other schools off-campus housing christina bell associate director of resi swimmers hearings delayed reasons unclear by samantha maes â– preliminary hearings of two athletes charged with alcohol-related offenses are pushed back to nov 19 the preliminary hearing for two members of the swim team darren podolak 09 and mac tichner 09 was changed from sept 21 to nov 19 podolak and tichner allegedly hosted a party at their home on taylor street on sept 13 the party was broken up by police and 18 stu dents including 12 members of the swim team were cited according to the case files at the district magis trate office podolak and tichner are each accused of 18 counts of furnishing alcohol to minors two counts of reckless endangerment of a minor two counts of corruption of minors one count for drinking under age and two for violating city ordinances podolak explained why the hearing presided over by judge nancy matos was rescheduled via e-mail podolak said judge matos's assistant contacted him on sept 19 to reschedule because judge matos would be away on the hearing date in an e-mail interview tichner agreed with po dolak sayingjudge matos's schedule was the reason why the hearing had been moved to november tichner said it is fairly typical for hearings to be rescheduled but in a phone interview judge matos responded to podolak and tichner's comments by saying tich ner's council was unavailable on sept 21 matos later clarified her initial statement saying the swimmers did not call her office to identify their council as a courtesy her office called and left a message with the swimmers but because they had not heard back the hearing had to be rescheduled although the hearings for podolak and tichner will be on the same day they will be represented by different councils according to the affidavit on the night of sept 13 officer william wright of the bethlehem police department was patrolling the area when he heard loud music coming from taylor street two minors in the house were found to be highly intoxicated and one was taken to the hospital podolak and tichner were arraigned before dis trict judge michael koury jr of the wilson borough podolak and tichner were committed to northampton county prison and were later released on 10,000 and 15,000 bail respectively podolak and tichner face a first degree misde meanor
