the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 114 no 3 tuesday september 12 2006 all the lehigh news first gast diversity integration key by alex roarty editor in chief when alice gast heard she had been select ed as lehigh's new president the university's 13 tn president in its 141-year history she had conflicting feelings perhaps that's surprising for someone just elected to lead a prestigious university but for gast she had more to con sider than just herself i was excited she said and then i had to tell my kids her children rebecca 12 and david 10 along with her husband bradley askins would of course be moving with her and how would they respond to the news moving is not easy gast said but quick ly after coming down here and seeing the area and getting to know people they got pretty excited the task of convincing her family to move to lehigh was the first hurdle she had to over come if she is to have a successful tenure however it will be far from the last hurdle lehigh's leadership faces important ques tions over diversity fundraising and greek life it must determine the right balance between research and teaching with its professors and continue to make inroads with its interdisci plinary integration lehigh also must find the right formula for maintaining its strong en gineering tradition while still supporting and growing programs in its other three colleges and gast will be at the forefront of all these decisions lehigh's first female president gast now 48 was born in houston but moved to northern california when she was 1 v 2 years old she moved to long beach calif when she was 10 and grew up there until she started attending the university of southern b&w photo by doug moque t president alice gast sits in her office in the alumni memorial building for an interview with editor in chief alex roarty remembering those lost b&w photo by chris ferenzi members of the lehigh community gathered sunday to remember the victims of the september 11 terrorist attacks at the opening ceremony for lehigh's september 11 memorial zoellner party celebrates arts by gabriela saade news writer a block party with live music was held in the tamerler court yard at zoellner arts center on saturday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of zoellner community members cel ebrated zoellner's opening by enjoying 10 hours of live music and food the outdoor concert fea tured a mix of musical genres accompanied by an indoor performance by nickel creek a grammy-winning bluegrass trio guild works an international team of kite flyers showcased their kites between musical performances john rodgers 08 per formed a blend of r&b and pop music which began what greeks worried about changes in social policy by emily mason news writer fraternities are no longer allowed to have any non-mem bers in their respective houses friday through saturday when alcohol is present if the party is not registered according to lehigh's new social policy for greek houses the new policy also in creases the number of people a fraternity is allowed to have at an unregistered event during the week the policy states sunday through thursday a fraternity may have up to 70 people in its house while alcohol is present previously a house could have no more than 50 people present the new policy was devel oped during the 2005-2006 school year by a social policy committee the committee in cluded members of the admin istration and members of the greek student body tim wilkinson assistant dean of fraternity and soror ity affairs said the goal of the policy is for the safety of the chapters and their members punishments for social viola tions have not changed they range from individual write ups to entire houses being put on probation according to the policy one brother of a house having a beer with any guest is in violation of the new social policy wilkinson said the new rule regarding non members has ini tiated some negative feedback from the greek community people have definitely voiced opinions that the friday saturday rule is a little harsh and don't understand how it can be enforced tyler rock 07 president of the interfraternity council said wilkinson said the new poli cy leaves a lot of room open for police and chapter discretion the police put themselves in a position where they have that discretion wilkinson said we need to trust them with their training that they can walk into a situation and ascertain whether or not it's actually a party wilkinson said wilkinson also said houses need to be responsible see gast page 2 see social page 5 see zoellner page 3 say word hip-hop festival comes to lehigh page 7 i jbm^^s r"t see full schedule of say word festival events bw.lehigh.edu
