announcement by charles j mor avec faculty chairman of the committee hailed by the leading symphony orchestra conductors as one of the outstanding singers of our genera tion miss brice is internationally known for her performances with orchestras in concert halls radio and through recordings the first of her race ever to win music's coveted naumberg foundation award she made her first town hall appearance at the age of three when she came to new york with the sedalia sing ers of north carolina howatt discusses government at new york student forum george howatt instructor in government discussed the ma chinery of student government at a student government forum and clinic at columbia university saturday the meeting was attended by delegates from 30 colleges and universities in the new york area following the talk he served as a response leader in a three-hour seidle on um in regard to the university meeting to be held in grace hall on dec 19 dean seidle com mented today university meetings are an attempt on the part of arcadia and omicron delta kappa to make available an opportunity for students and faculty to come together to dis cuss problems and programs of common interest to all lehigh men national student association who were co-sponsors with columbia in arranging the forum further outgrowths of the meet ing were requests for howatt to appear before several new york student groups who are revising student government constitutions these include saint john's univer sity brooklyn c.c.n.y business day school and n.y.u at wash ington square carol brice one of the nation's leading contraltos will sing at lehigh on jan 6 in the student concert-lectures series she has sung before president truman and in operas and private recitals throughout the nation dean pope reminded the congrega have been handed down to us from an of yale divinity school asserted tion between possessions and per panel devoted to the subject under consideration three panels on the other phases of student govern ment were held concurrently with the one on student government machinery howatt based his address around important issues involved in es tablishing effective students gov ernment greatest interest was ex pressed on the questions of nom ination and election methods and plans of representation for student councils describing election methods used here howatt discussed the value of preferential voting tech niques in solving campus repre sentation problems he distributed samples of lehigh ballots and mimeographed materials on elec tion methods after the conference many requests were made for copies of the arcadia constitution and related materials on student government howatt has been invited to serve on he advisory council of the new york metropolitan region of the gallagher named mining chairman dr robert t gallagher associate professor of mining en gineering was elected chairman of the lehigh valley section of tne american institute of mining and george howatt issues on the panel on student government organization were de termined through a study of sev eral hundred reprsentative college and university constitutions and through personal experience and interviews howatt acted as a consultant on the organization of student gov ernment at the annual congress of the national student association at the university of illinois last aug 24 to sept 3 while a graduate student here he served as advisor to the arcadia committee which drafted the pres ent student body constitution daughter of a congregational minister and a school teacher she was born in indianapolis and grew up in sedalia n c where her parents were associated with the palmer memorial institute in announcing the new program the committee issued the following statement the lehigh universi ty student concerts-lectures series committee is happy to be able to fill the vacancy on its cur rent schedule with such a top ranking singer as carol brice the booking of this interna tional star has been made possible through the interest of david hocker her manager when he heard of the cancellation of the american tour of the stars of the doyly carte company she has been acclaimed everywhere she has appeared at talladega college in alabama from which she was graduated with a degree in music she learn ed of the julliard graduate school of music and its fellowships her mother and brother jona than who is now her accompanist were living in new york then so she came north to join them in 1939 that fall she accomplished her ambition by winning a julliard fellowship which was renewed for five successive years miss brice appeared first in continued on page 8 col 3 vespers star lu moravian choral groups despite a chill mist almost 1400 students faculty members and townspeople massed into packer chapel to hear the annual christmas vespers sunday featuring the combined glee clubs of moravian college for women and lehigh university with accompaniment of the lehigh university orchestra the vespers began at 4 p.m with a prelude from bach by george gansz uni versity organist after an orchestral arrange ment the choirs entered with lighted candles to the processional o come o come emmanuel the program itself consisted of hymns by the singing groups and carols sung by the audience president whitaker delivered the greeting he called on mankind to aid in retaining the religious sig nificance rapidly slipping away from holy days chaplain bean read portions of the holy story consistent with the selections of the choirs the pro gram was climaxed by the singing of silent night with the chapel illuminated only by a few lights from the apse closing carol was the westminister carol gloria in excelsis deo total frosh in 1948 when better than one out of every two students or 50.1 per cent received the inauspicious re of the 2952 undergraduate stu dents enrolled this term 1027 or 34.8 per cent were valentnie re cipients last fall with an en ollment five students greater only 987 pink slips were sent out to 33.4 ports this year more frosh found valentines waiting for them but the increased enrollment
