the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 16 tuesday november 3 1998 all the lehigh news first candles flickered to honor assault victims by julie zysman and erika berg news writers a candlelight march and vigil entitled take back the night began at look out drive thursday to remember and honor vic tims of sexual and violent assault the starting point of this six-year-old tradition was located at a tree that was planted in memory of two female bethlehem residents murdered at that loca tion in the summer of 1996 jenny tsai 00 participated in the can dlelight vigil because she wanted to raise awareness it is important to get involved even though we may not want to talk about it tsai said lauren cliggitt 00 had a different rea son for attending the vigil everyone has their own personal story which makes them connected to what the event represents cliggitt said each participant held a candle as a part of the march and pink ribbons were placed around the tree at the starting point the procession marched past fraternity houses and trembley park coming to a halt at the university center flagpole dr lloyd steffen university chaplain spoke about violence in the world acting and speaking out against these evils will bring us closer steffen said sara nowlin 99 participated in the march last year and knew what to expect as long as you get involved sexual assault becomes recognized and more of an issue nowlin said kathy calabrese director of the day care center organized many of the pro grams for sexual assault awareness week the purpose of the vigil was to provide emotional support and personal empower ment for men and women who have suf fered from sexual assault calabrese said we also wanted to raise society's aware ness about this problem sarah goldman 02 thought that the vigil achieved its purpose i think it's a serious issue that people need to know about goldman said the b w photo by danielle frikker ryan johnson 01 performs during the philharmonic's halloween concert friday inducted scholars get chance to bridge the gap by jessica lascar news writer the lacocca scholar institute celebrated their 10th anniversary wednesday at lacocca hall with the initiation of 12 juniors into senior scholar status roger nagel executive director of the lacocca institute explained the reason for the institute the purpose is for the scholars to learn more about themselves about global com petitiveness and about lehigh from a broad er view than the college that they are in nagel said each inductee was introduced and a description of the their activities and goals was read they were also presented with a piece of lacocca scholar jewelry the ceremony also marked the birth of the scholars for life alumni organization rob christie 96 lacocca scholar described why scholars for life is differ ent from other alumni organizations it is a living network of people dedi cated to learning teaching and competing as leaders lee lacocca 45 brought the ceremony to a close he emphasized the importance of hard work he said that the ability to listen is an indispensable skill he also stressed that grades earned at college are not the only basis by which to predict future success the ability to deal and communicate with people effectively is just as important in the end you deal with people lacocca said sometimes you have busi ness people who are geniuses but they can't even talk to their secretaries properly lacocca was impressed with the group and reminded the inductees that because they are a select group they must serve as role models and live up to their potential i'm proud to be associated with the pro gram he said it is a catalyst to get the most competitive people out into the work ing world carl brundage 00 was excited to be honored at the ceremony i am looking forward to doing some good things next year not only with my class but with the senior class before they leave brundage said mrs kessler parent of inductee emily kessler 00 summed up the evening this is what being a parent is all about sharing a happy moment b&w photo by melissa brown lee lacocca and president farrington attended the lacocca scholar ceremony wednesday see vigil page 4 see scholar page 4 mmmmmiz&ammmm — yrnnnnrni wrirm quick esp the men's soccer team phi gamma delta how can using lichens m-uu secured a place in the hosts fundraiser in help to predict league playoffs memory of tyler morris earthquakes the lon 9 est case of see page 15 see page 6 see page 7 hiccups lasted for more sports 12-16 news 1-6 science 7-9 volleyball 12 world news briefs 2 lab report 9 „ „ „ afx _ , „ _ source strange but true website maaamßßßßa^et^l hootball 16 panel discussion 5 http://www.sbt.bhmedia.com
