ifc-scheduled rush events according to the rationale freshmen should be given time to adjust to college academics and life away from home as well as explore what the university has to offer without being immediate ly influenced by an abusive alcohol environment with dry rush we felt that keeping freshmen off the hill wasn't the way to go about this adjustment said ifc president scan kelly that's what defeated it he added no one even suggested the time period for forbidding freshmen on the hill be shortened after a change in the last proposal all social functions must stop serving alcohol by 2 a.m rather than be cleared out it was approved 31-3 support for the proposals said kelly was overwhelmingly positive if somewhat reluctant after being made to understand why these changes have to come they knew what the right thing to do was the proposals will be recommended to the trustees for their vote at the jan 15 board meeting referring to the drastic compromises in the social policy the student body has declared itself willing to make kelly said the scary thing is that it might not be enough nities and sororities with their pubnites and greek week celebrations has a devastating impact on the cultural environment and is incompatible with our desire to create an ethos rooted in intellectual growth and moral development a number of essential steps must be taken first of all the availability of alcohol on campus must be restricted....second we must be more courageous in addressing the inordinate impact of the fraternities and sororities on the cultural and social climate of the school alumni pressure notwithstanding we must reduce the density of fraternities and sororit ies and replace them with living contexts more suitable to the cultural and intellectual climate of a first-rate university i think it's just the sentiments of a few faculty said interfraternity council president scan kelly a very vocal minority the greek system is pretty much here to stay-it has too positive a history and tradition to be wiped out by a few faculty members profs greeks hurt academia byeoincallan brown and white news writer the faculty caucus drafting committee is prepar ing a document for presentation to the faculty caucus tomorrow which will voice a negative arts and science faculty reaction against the greek system according to an excerpt from the rough draft it was not a registered complaint against the fraternities said government professor laura olson rather it was an intention to get the faculty involved with student life many students come to lehigh eager for intel lectual vitality reads the letter instead they encounter the social climate of a party school a prevailing student attitude that is anti-intellectual and careerist and little evidence of student concern for the significant social and moral issues of our day the most significant characteristic of student culture at lehigh is the inordinate influence of the greek system the unusually high density of frater who've had a bad experience with a fraternity or sorority attempts for comments from the faculty members most involved proved difficult olson a member of the drafting committtee was unfamiliar with the document and referred to associate government professor edward morgan and associate jewish studies professor laurence silberstein as the auth ors silberstein was unavailable for comment and morgan refused to comment on the document until after tomorrow's faculty caucus this has been an in-house project he said it would be irresponsi ble of me to discuss it the letter first entered student hands when a faculty member gave a photocopy to kelly he thought i would be interested in what it had to say since then i understand they are working on another draft right now it comes across pretty anti fraternity and they may have toned it down kelly said i'm not worried said kelly this is absolutely not a grass-roots movement by the faculty to eradi cate fraternities trump as speaker indicates lehigh outlook an appropriate speaker for a comm encement senior rence goldman heard him speak on 20-20 and although he speaks very well said the only reason people want him as speaker is because he is wealthy norman melchcrt dean of the col lege of arts and science said i guess i'd rather have a world famous nov elist or a poet or a nobel prize winner but the senior class with that selection most students interviewed also appear satisfied with their choice
