he and his staff would explore different ways to raise money we're looking to the department of by kristin ljpani brown and white sports editor senator arlen specter visited the construction site of lehigh's advan ced technology for large structural systems atlss yesterday where he told reporters he is very impressed with the facility and that he will try to got federal funding for its completion the u.s senator front philadelphia visited bethlehem for the purpose of meeting with mayor-elect ken smith before their meeting however both specter and smith visited lehigh to view atlss's development in a meet ing with president likins before a press conference likins asked for specter's help in raising an additional 10 million lehigh has been a key factor in the development of the lehigh valley and i am anxious to see if we can bring the federal government into the picture specter said the united states future lies in ventures of this sort he added it is so important to the future of our class speaker may be elected president is the representative for the entire class and should be rewarded by being permit ted to speak at commencement they suggest ed for future senior speakers to have a committee review his speech three to four weeks prior to graduation to ensure appropriate content according to lehigh provost david sanchez in the future the senior class president will most likely not be automatically permitted to speak at commencement sanchez added lik ins left the selection process to be decided by the provost council and ideas such as a speaking contest or perhaps an election are being considered for the future selection by kimberly minarovich brown and white news writer despite debate about changing the tradition of automatically allowing the senior class president to speak at commencement senior class president jeff enslin will deliver the speech this june several committees have been established in response to complaints made about the casual attitude and lack of decorum of last year's speaker parents as well as faculty members were offended by his manner and appearance consequently debate has gone on regarding whether or not to allow the senior class we compiled a list of reasons why the senior class president should speak and directed it to president likins he was sympathetic to the problem and agreed the class president should speak this year " jeff enslin senior class president by p am lott brown and white news writer roe vs wade attorney urges civic involvement students at lehigh learn to make a living but they should also be here to make a better life and world said sarah weddington the attorney who successfully argued the landmark roe vs wade abortion case if students want to create change they need to find out how to have more input in the world weddington told about 75 students in packard lab auditorium wednesday and leadership is the way to do it weddington explained by becoming the president of the church youth group during elementary school i started out early practicing leadership she said at age 26 she started making changes by arguing the roe vs wade case before the u.s supreme court and by becoming the youngest woman to ever win a supreme court case the 1973 case established that the right of privacy provided by the u.s constitution includes the right to have an abortion the decision overrules all state legislation making abortions illegal besides starting her leadership training early wed dington said the reason she achieved so much so young is when you are young you say it's not the way it ought to be and you have the tendency to change it women were forced to travel to mexico from texas to have abortions and because of this they were coming back in ill health weddington said the texas law prohibited abor tions except when the mother's life was in danger wanting to see a change in this law she said she ended up going to washington i want you to be leaders because there are still things about the world that need to be changed leadership can do this weddington said i believe the best place to get leadership training is right here get involved with organiza tions clubs and events and be part of the leadership practice because the more you do the more you learn what makes a leader weddington said is not some special formula of traits or genes but what she calls situational see weddington page 4 process the provost council is examining the procedure taken by other universities as a guideline sanchez said it is our aim to ensure that the ceremony honors the students and is represen tative of lehigh's best students some students are upset by this sudden mention of altering the tradition of not auto matically allowing the senior class president to deliver the class speech at commencement senior skip cassady said i don't agree it is obvious that that person has put i n a lot of effort for the class and i think he should have that right to speak if he wishes to take it a decision will be finalized in march when the provost council will meet with the senior class officials to decide on the future policy president to deliver the speech it was suggest ed the senior class elect the speaker the main reason to continue the tradition this year is due to lack of notification regarding the sudden alteration enslin said i was unhappy to hear of this decision through the grapevine because the senior class president is the one who speaks and should be notified if there is a change we compiled a list of reasons why the senior class president should
