lu greeks buddy up at special olympics ies pitching star tug mcgraw official sporting events included alpine skiing nordic skiing figure skating and speed skating opening ceremonies were held at shawnee mountain and featured a parade of athletes a torch parade by the ski school the stroudsburg high school band a hot air balloon and the lighting of the flame of hope several representatives from leh igh and other pennsylvania universit ies participated as volunteer coor dinators some of the lehigh particip bydinaalcure brown and white news writer let the games begin was the cry at the opening ceremonies of the 12th annual pennsylvania special olympic games held march 8-11 at shawnee mountain ski area in wilkes-barre pa more than 250 athletes from 30 counties and the state of delaware competed to be the best in their respective age and ability divisions the honorary chairman for the games was former philadelphia phill cleaning up as well as assisting coaches chaperones and security per sonnel according to pennsylvania special olympics director ginny kirkwood special olympics believes through sports training and competition people with mental retardation ben efit physically mentally socially and spiritually families are strengthened and the community at large both through par ticipation and observation is united see special page 5 ants included members of alpha sig ma phi pi lambda phi sigma chi chi psi pi kappa alpha alpha tau omega delta phi delta tau delta and sigma phi epsilon fraternities and alpha omicron pi alpha phi and delta gamma sororities volunteers acted as buddies to the athletes their responsibilities included escorting the athletes to and from the events and making sure athletes got their lunches volunteers also assisted with decorating serving snacks distributing lunches and the brown and white v 01.99 n0.35 lehigh university tuesday march 15 1988 bethlehem pennsylvania performing arts center anticipates backing 215 758-4181 more than a year ago to program the internal needs of the building a design for the guts from the inside out said ripa the university will shortly begin a process which will result in recom mending an architect he said it was announced at a recent arts and science faculty meeting that the board of trustees has named someone as a leader of the fund-raising cam paign that will start when the project has kicked off said ripa he said this represents very serious planning in key areas being all spread out as they are curr ently many locations have been discuss ed earlier this semester there was a debate as to locating it on the moun taintop campus or the main campus where the students are said ripa adding the center will most likely be built on the main campus it would not be simply a lab space for arts students said ripa it would enhance the perception of lehigh as an institution the administration is very serious and serious planning has been undertaken he continued a theatrical consultant was hired ently these departments utilize rooms in several buildings including chandler-ullmann and lamberton halls explained ripa the plans also allow space for two full theaters one theater would seat between 800-1,000 and a smaller theat er approximately 300 ripa said the larger theater would be acoustically suitable for music events in addition to the theaters there will probably be an art exposition area he added the entire departments of music and theater would be relocated into the building ripa said instead of by valerie hoesch brown and white news writer lehigh's proposed performing arts center is undergoing serious plan ning although final plans are not yet definite according to augustine ripa jr head of the speech and theater department things are poised and ready we are just waiting for the other shoe to drop a financial one and there is optimism that that shoe will drop in the forseeable future he said plans for the proposed center include lab and office space for the music and theater departments curr lu student charged in thefts a lehigh university student who was arraig ned before district magistrate john gombosi on march 11 was charged with burglary theft and receiving stolen property timothy hemings 89 of west hampton beach ny was questioned on march 10 and a warrant for his arrest was sworaout on march 11 for a burglary at 433 montclair aye a video cassette recorder and a microwave oven was stolen the police report said hemings before being turned over to the bethlehem police was questioned and arrest ed on march 9 by campus police for a burglary at phi kappa theta fraternity a stereo equaliz er was stolen from the fraternity according to dean of students john kern to lead new senate smeaton campus police had heard a rumor about a theft at the fraternity on march 4 campus police went to the fraternity to inves tigate the rumor and the equalizer was discov ered to be missing campus police had information smeaton said to contact hemings the information surfaced as a part of normal investigation following the theft he said smeaton would not comment on what infor mation campus police had the hearing has been set for thursday hemings has been released on his own recog nizance hemings will also face university disciplinary proceedings for the campus theft however not until after the cheers lu teams the city of bethlehem is very proud of lehigh university said bethlehem mayor ken smith yesterday morning as he proclaimed monday march 14 1988 to be both lehigh univers ity men's basketball championship day and lehigh university wrestling championship day in a presentation attended by president likens and members of the athletic department smith presented both lehigh men's basketball coach fran mcafferty and lehigh wrestling coach thad turner with certificates honoring the two teams achieve ments this year having two lehigh teams each win their respective cham pionships within a week presented the perfect chance to show behtlehem's support said smith who graduated from lehigh in the same class as turner establish a smooth procedure to allocate funds to university clubs thereby fostering a good working relationship between the student senate and the clubs kern said the senate will do everything it can to help achieve a smooth implementation of the new social policy in a fair manner and expressed a concern for the safety of students living on and off campus he suggested adding more security patrols and additional campus telephones kern said he was
