the brown and white klehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 friday september 27 1996 all the lehigh news first vol 104 no 7 by carter wyckoff news writer faculty focuses on quality of learning lehigh faculty members met and discussed this sum mer's american association for higher education conven tion wednesday during a faculty development luncheon in the university center the conference which took place in breckinridge colo addressed quality in learning and strengthening meth ods of teaching invitations were limited and 28 universities sent representatives including lehigh those attending the conference from lehigh were patti ota vice provost joan straumanis dean of the college of arts and sciences ted morgan political science professor jack lule chairman of the department of journalism and communications jeffrey mi let theatre professor and dina wills faculty development coordinator of the department of journalism and communications in a summary of the conference lule spoke to the lun cheon about the issue of technology in education one of the topics covered at the conference there could be a great increase in productivity in the b&w photo by michelle heyse ted morgan political science professor spoke wednesday to lehigh professors at the faculty development luncheon truth about rotc draws enrollment by lisa spitz assitant news editor rotc enrollment is on the rise now that student misconcep tions concerning the program have been cleared up last year capt john o'brien conducted a study on lehigh's perceptions of rotc the study showed students do not always know the truth about rotc people thought that to be in rotc you had to attend a boot camp and that is completely untrue o'brien said according to o'brien rotc has become more accessible to students by offering more schol arships and requiring less time from the students rotc has become more user-friendly to students because of increased scholarships and no monday labs which in the past were a conflict for some stu dents o'brien said lt col robert wolfenden is working to help students on campus see all of the options rotc has to offer by working with admissions athletics financial aid media mailings and career seminars wolfenden said he greatly encourages students to take mil itary science courses even if they are not planning to join the rotc program there is 100 percent no obligation that if you take a mil itary science course you have to join rotc wolfenden said this past summer 16 seniors attended a six-week training at fort bragg where they were put into leadership positions and professionals assessed them on their growth wolfenden said the six-week program is intended to strengthen leadership skills summer training session is focused on leadership develop ment and assessment wolfenden said the purpose of specialty training is to build self confi dence refine leadership skills and to learn skills which could some day be used in the army bernard stabinski 97 is a senior rotc member who attended the advanced camp last summer at fort bragg stabinski said the experience taught him how to work well with other people especially with people from other areas of the country you have to learn how to work well and interact with peo ple with whom you have never worked before stabinski said o'brien said the program real ly gives rotc students an under standing of responsibility and self-discipline this program is about devel oping leaders the definition of leadership is the ability to influ ence others to accomplish a mis sion o'brien said amy walts 00 is excited about beginning rotc this year i think that rotc is going to make me a better leader walts said it will make me a stronger person and more well-rounded joynt not recognized on communiversity day the campus celebrated diversity in our community and also focused on the 25th anniversary of women at lehigh one of the people responsible for per suading the board of trustees to allow women to attend lehigh isl carey b joynt a retiredfl international relations profes-h sor although was afl guiding force in the integra-b tion of men and women at lehigh he was not recognized for his efforts raymond wylie chairman of the inter national relations department explained joynt's involvement on campus carey joynt chaired a committee that had hearings discussions and debates on campus wylie said he was active on the campus with a variety of groups when joynt came to lehigh in the 19505 he was an ir professor and later became the head of the department for 20 years according to joynt in 1969 demonstra tions began to occur on lehigh campus the students were behaving undemoc ratically joynt said they were taking â– over buildings it became the antithesis of college the demonstrations were due to opposition of the vietnam war but also to internal prob lems occurring on the campus the males wanted lehigh to become co-educational i realized that if we did not go co-ed lehigh would be in financial trouble joynt said i agreed to help as long as we told the alumni everything i wanted to keep lehigh united convincing alumni and the board of trustees was
