the brown and white vol 99 no 38 friday march 27 1992 lehigh university it's ted ! media mogul ted turner to speak at graduation ted turner chairman of the board and president of turner broadcasting system inc will be the commencement speaker at lehigh's graduation exercises on sunday may 3 1 in stabler arena lehigh president peter likins and darren blumberg senior class president announced turner's selection and acceptance turner time magazine's 1991 man of the year was chosen by the senior class which traditionally works with the university's administration in selecting a commencement speaker we re very excited to have mr turner blumberg said it's a great opportunity to have someone of his stature at lehigh i think the class will respond favorably he's a name everyone knows the atlanta-based tbs is the leading supplier of entertainment and news on cable tv among its holdings are cable news network cnn headline news tbs superstations turner network television and sportsouth ted turner joins a distinguished list of high-profile commencement speakers at lehigh likins said from lee lacocca to bill cosby all chosen by the senior class officers on behalf of their classmates i'm looking forward to an exciting day turner began his career as an account we're very excited to have mr turner i think 111 the class will respond iii favorably he is a name §§|§ everybody knows darren blumberg senior class president executive for turner advertising co where he became president and chief operating officer in 1963 in 1970 he purchased chan nel 17 in atlanta and in 1916 he originated the superstation concept transmitting the station's signal to cable systems nationwide via satellite courtesy of media relations ted turner will be the 1992 commencement speaker attempted sexual assault prompts letter to parents by mitchell drake associate editor r i,:,.i i..,t n .„ i — a a female lehigh student was attacked march 14 by a man while she was walking on service drive behind sinclair laboratories police said at 7:40 p.m an unidentified man came up behind the victim put his arm around her neck and put a sharp object in her ribs lehigh police reported the assailant forced her to walk up the steps leading to the sculpture garden behind e.w fairchild martindale library and told her to take off her coat and shirt police said the police reported that she was lying face down when she saw what could have been headlights from a car and began to scream for help according to police the victim said the attacker fled after she started screaming and she put her shirt and coat back on and went to get help the police describe the suspect as 25-30 years of age approximately 5 9 to 6 tall of three assaults this month this is the second attempted assault on a female student in addition there have been several other incidents of harassment john smeaton assistant vice president for student affairs sent a letter to parents of lehigh students informing them ofthe recent attacks and asked them to help in encouraging their son or daughter to be more safety conscious smeaton said it is important for students to be aware of events like this but he added the problem is to translate this awareness into safe behavior in the letter smeaton advised that students take common sense safety precautions don't walk alone at night avoid walking in areas that are not well lit use the campus transportation system and report anyone or anything that appears suspicious to the campus police eugene dax chief of lehigh police said security measures have been increased on campus and additional police officers and security guards have been assigned to patrol the lower campus dax said he was pleased with the level of cooperation of bethlehem police he said bethlehem and lehigh police are performing a joint investigation into the marijuana cocaine use down report says by pebby schwartz news writer while cocaine arid marijuana use by pennsylvania colj lege students is down anecdotar reports indicate that use of hallucinogens such as lsd has increased that news was part of a recent report issued by the presidential task force on substance use issues on pennsylvania college and university campuses lehigh president peter uklns f whose son is a recovering drug addict is chair of the task force whose report is fitted drugs on campus at the btrrsllentum we believe that we are in the early stages of a prolonged withdrawal from drugs udns said the task force is responsible for identifying model poli cies practices and procedures aimed at substance use and abuse in addition the task force coordinates college and university programs with communities families and other agencies to provide effective education intervention and treatment services while the task force found downturns in use of some see turner page a9 see ormos page al 1 see attack page alo local theater offers alternative entertainment page b1
