shutterbugs will exhibit pictures the first annual national col legiate photography exhibition will be held at the university of miss ouri school of journalism may 6 through 10 according to alpha kappa mv honorary photography fraternity the exhibit is open to all person enrolled in any accre dited college or university a bulletin issued by the photo graphers organization said con vinced that the advancement of pictorial journalism among college students is of paramount import ance today kappa alpha mv hon orary photography fraternity is attempting to bring photography to the attention of journalism schools all over the united states the exhibit at missouri will be judged by three of the nations out standing exponents of photogra phy and the twenty five best prints will make up a traveling show that will be available to university camera clubs and other interested groups throughout the nation there is no entry fee for the contest and one man may submit up to eight prints anyone desir ing further information about the exhibition should contact john hanley president of the camera club all entries must be in by april 30 asme meeting to be held thursday asme society to hear about mighty mortar lehigh university students and members of engineering societies throughout the lehigh valley will have the opportunity to hear the story of one of the country's fore most secret inventons told by the inventor himself at the meeting of the lehigh student branch of the american society of mechanical engineers thursday night the speaker dr lorenz iver sen who is president of the mesta machine company of pittsburgh recently developed the world's largest mortar known as little david and will discuss the can non at the meeting scheduled for 8 p m in lehigh's packard audi torium designed and produced at the mesta machine company plant the 36-inch mortar is capable of hurl ing its deadly explosive charge to a range of 6 miles and according to tests made at aberdeen prov ing grounds its shell can pierce 10 feet of reinforced concrete the cannon which wreaks more destruction than a bomb was ori ginally designed for smashing through the fortifications in the siegfried line and later intended for use against the japs but the war ended before it could be em ployed look holds contest for amateur bands the first national amateur dance band contest in history is being held this year by look magazine with preliminaries starting in march and the finals ending late in august in new work bands winning the national championshp will be awarded trophies for first second and third place by look while outstanding professional dance musicians music personali ties and big-name band leaders will present additional trophies to band and individual dance soloists all college dance bands are eli gible to enter this contest accord ing to look two sets of awards will be given in every case — one for big bands and one for small combos among the well-known professional dance musicians and personalities in the music world who will judge and make special awards are woody herman frank sinatra charlie spivak jo stacord duke ellington spike jones buddy rich the three suns stan kenton and others the preliminaries as well as the finals will be judged by outstand ing professional musicians from the bands competing in the finals the judges will select an all america amateur will be resumed sunday march 24 at 4:30 p m in packer memorial church on the campus it was decided by the ar cadia appointed chapel committee and the rev george m bean uni verity chaplain at a luncheon meeting last tuesday the vesper services will be held each sunday thereafter the university chaplain will officiate and a choir comprised of members of the glee club will sing under the direction of dr t edgar shields organist and head of the university music depart ment the service of non-sectarian christian worship will be approxi mately 45 minutes in duration with the increasing demand for chapel services on the part of re turning students a committee was appointed by arcadia to carry through the plans of previous years for resuming services on the campus members of the commit tee are mcl ramberg chairman jim dennison tom mckinley and roland savidge m and c announces jon epstein pres on friday afternoon march 8 the mustard and cheese club of lehigh university announced the appointment of the following men as officers of the club jon epstein president seymour glatzer vice president howard ockleman business manager and tom lewis secretary plans for the spring semester play were discussed since in the past the mustard and cheese plays have always come around examin ation time it was decided to move the date up to sometime in may several plays were discussed incuding the hasty heart the story of a wounded scotch soldier and dear ruth a comedy both of these plays have had long and successful runs on broadway allen goodman past president of mustard and cheese went to new york this past weekend to obtain more information as to plays which might possibly be pro duced next week the play on which the club decides will be an nounced as soon as a play has been sel ected a date will be set for read ings and all students are invited to try out for parts the club also announced its in tentions of giving a dinner for the initiates to be held in the near future seniors approve plans for dance a proposal to hold a senior dance march 23 was approved at a meeting of the senior class held last friday afternoon in drown hall dick huyett class president was in charge of the meeting the dance was suggested as a means of providing sufficient cap ital to enable the seniors to pub lish the epitome class yearbook without a deficit and to pay for their plaque it has already been necessary to assess each senior ten dollars dick macadams chairman of the five-man dance committee ex plained the duties of the committee and asked the seniors to cooper ate first arcadia meeting sees diamond head three dance schedule for spring semester dr herbert maynard diamond head of the department of eco nomics and sociology was chosen faculty advisor to arcadia student governing body at the cabinet's first spring semester meeting march 6th the cabinet was in formed by the dance committee of the definite dates for the three main dance events of the semester senior ball — march 23 if house party — april 28 27 arcadia dance — june ist the dance committee's announ cement of the forthcoming dances this semester highlights this week's social news in the past lew years only two dances were held each semester so this sem ester's committee has set a prece dent by arranging for three gala festivals melvin ramberg and harry kohl were appointed to the five man committee while dick huyett was elected chairman of the com mittee a letter was received from the red cross requesting arcadia to initiate a drive for contributions from the new students an at senior function march 23 will see festive activity in grace hall entertainment at intermission brown & white lehigh university saturday evening march 23 lehigh's senior class is sponsoring a gala ball to be held at grace hall jimmy ray his trumpet and his band wil provide music for the occasion tickets for the dance which will be semi-formal are now on sale at 2.40 per couple tax included at the supply bureau and at the ar cadia offiice in drown hall jimmy raye is not new to lehigh he appeared here last april as the feature of the town-dorm semi-formal the sizzling trumpet solos and rides by jimmy himself paces the arrangements without turning the rest of the band into mere background music as some ace trumpeters are wont to do jimmy gained fame when he played with bunny berrigan and later with t d the vocals are handled by charming sandra steward win ome blonde singer whose torch songs are really something to hear the dance will be held from 10 until 1 with dean and mrs wray h was a good turn out but few of the candidates brought their instruments never theless a rehearsal was held if the results of the rehearsal are any indication a successful season is in store for our
