pi delta epsilon national jour nalism society announces the ini tiation of four new men thursday november 29 1945 in drown hall the following are the men initiat ed hans baer i e j'47 editor of the brown and white earle compton bus j'47 sports editor jon epstein arts f'47 desk editor and robert jones bus j'46 news manager for the second half of the semester the affair started with a lun cheon at lamberton hall at noon after which the members adjourn ed to drown hall where the for mal initiation was held the ceremonies were in charge of jack shipherd and richard macadams the presiding officers pro-tempore formal elections to replace the of ficers of last semester were held after the initiation ceremony the new officers are jack shipherd president jon epstein secretary and richard huyett treasurer several projects for pi delt were discussed and it was finally decided that two definite projects to improve publications on the le high university campus would be investigated they are to assist in the publication of the 1946 epi tome and the continuing of the journalism conference in the spring semester conducted by pi delta epsilon for high schools in the lehigh valley hayes returns to university another member of the faculty who has recently resumed his du ties at lehigh after a leave of absence is lieutenant command er byron c hayes assistant di rector of admissions mr hayes came to lehigh di rectly from the university of chi cago with a master's degree in education after a year with the admissions office in his present capacity he enlisted in the navy in june 1942 at present he is on terminal leave and expects to be put on inactive duty in january 1946 entering the navy as a lieuten ant j.g mr hayes served for a time as an instructor at the usnr midshipman school at new york city and later on patrol duty in the atlantic his last tour of duty was as the assistant to the commander of es cort division 62 in the mediter ranean and division intelligence officer for his group which orig inally operated escorting convoys from new york and norfolk to casa blanca oran bizerte and palermo in january 1945 he won the bronze star for the first sub marine that they sank later the division was made a north atlantic killer group whose job was to hunt down submarines mr hayes considers this exciting work as his most interesting work in the navy the division was credited with two submarines during the time that they were on duty on may 15 1945 mr hayes division was ordered to pick up the nazi u-boat 805 which was the first surrendered submarine ever to be brought into the sub base at new london conn job psychology professor graham discusses problem psychology is playing an impor tant role in the placement of re turned veterans at suitable jobs according to prof james l gra ham associate professor of psy chology at lehigh who gives us an insight into some of the problems of job selection many of the men who were tak en from their places in society came away from jobs in which they were happy and secure when these men are discharged they wish to go back to these old places in society to the psychologist this group presents no problem other men while they made a good living before the war never were quite satisfied with their lots they felt that they had latent talents which they could put to use that they could be happier and more successful in another line of work continued on page 6 dot welcomes applicants ; plans forum december 13 a meeting of newcomers to the delta omicron theta debating so ciety was held in drown hall at 4 p.m thursday nov 29 prof albert rights set forth the plan for initiating novices in the art of argument and discussion mal colm schvey chairman for the so ciety welcomed the new members and all those who might be inter ested to join the monthly luncheon roundtable where discussion of im portant topics that will lead to fu ture debates with other colleges will be held the first of these sessions will be held on tuesday dec 11 at 12:15 p.m at a place to be announced new candidates for the debating participation who attended the meeting were tom mckinley john barrett fred raiff roger tove and malcolm schvey all others who should like to join the group should call mr schvey 6-6262 president john tuberty an nounces that the lehigh valley debating conference league will meet at muhlenberg college in al lentpwn on thursday dec 13 at 7:36 p.m he urges all lehigh stu dents who are interested to attend the discussion on uniform mar riage laws as the sequel to the ex cellent roundtable discussion held on uniform marriage laws here at lehigh in november glen harmeson heed coach lehigh university served as athletic officer at amer ican naval bases before being as signed to the same work at amer ican occupied islands in the pa cific with his discharge from the navy two weeks ago he had at tained the rank of lieutenant com mander a graduate of purdue university in 1930 harmy was recognized as one of the best athletes ever to represent the boilermakers glenn harmeson was named director of athletics at lehigh in september 1939 following the retirement of the late col nelson a kellogg prior to coming to south moun tain university he served as assis tant football coach at purdue when harmeson arrives here next week he will immediately take over the basketball squad of over fifty men which leo pren dergast is now coaching it will take harmy a few weeks to take over once again in taylor and re sume his duties as director of ath letics which eb caraway has so faithfully carried on during the war the basketball team which harmy will take over has been rehearsing plays which harmeson has sent ahead for leo to use wrestlers warm-up for saturday's match with swarthmore champion at 136 last year 135 lbs richard forshay no likely con tender 145 lbs richard seals who was a star wrestler on the freshman team in 1941 will prob ably clinch this weight the 155 lb class will be decided between charles sevitz a liberty high school wrestler of some promise and james k wilson a district champion from the philadelphia district in the heavyweight class ted niewenhous will probably return to his 165 lb berth niewenhous was captain of the brown and white grapplers in 1944 and shows considerable promise for this sea son in the 175 lb class james jackson former champion in the preparatory school class from shady side academy will be top man joe koran so far has it his own way in the heavyweight un limited bracket from the evidence of practice in the wrestling room of the old gym the competition for the team has exceeded the last several years with hopeful changes in the wrest ling picture at lehigh the stu dent body is planning a big turn out to see lehigh beat swarth more five
