the star of last saturday's tussle with rutgers the play occurred in the early part of the third quarter larkin speaks to alumni professor larkin head of the lehigh department of mechanical engineering speaking before the regular monthly meeting of the lehigh alumni at the hotel beth lehem last monday october 30 outlined his plans for the postwar period in mechanical engineering education let us bring in twelve smart young men professor larkin suggested and train them for about three years then for a time they will go out into industry with the understanding that we want them back on their return they will have the latest information in their particular fields and in some cases will bring with them re search problems which we can tackle here at the university reviewing the records of grad uates professor larkin said that continued on page 4 all-university banquet set for dec 20 five man committee arranging all details in a meeting on wednesday no vember 1 the lehigh five-man committee set the date of the uni versity banquet at december 20 the hotel bethlehem has been tentatively named the place for the festivities following the plan used for last spring's banquet the student concert lecture funds will be used to obtain a speaker v war ren fox chem e feb 45 and willard j boothby bus oct 45 will make the arrangements while william day bus feb 45 and sanford w wilson chem e oct 45 will be in charge of getting a speaker they will meet with the faculty members of the scl com mittee and decide bob mayer chem e feb 45 will act as chairman of the committee as he is chairman of the five-man commit tee the last banquet was held last spring with dr f alexander ma goun associate professor of hu man relations at massachusetts in stitute of technology as its guest speaker and as all lehigh men present will recall it was a tre mendous success the scl sees no reason why this banquet should not turn out to be equally or even more successful since it is to be the first and also the last such event in quite a while the fullest enthusiasm and cooperation on the part of every student is an abso lute necessity to achieve this mer it however the best way for the student to support the program and insure himself of a highly beneficial and educational eve ning is to get tickets early and make all plans to attend the ban quet next month dewey wins lehigh poll governor dewey defeated pres ident roosevelt in the campus poll which was conducted in last week's b & w the total count showing 23 votes for the challeng er and 15 for the incumbent nor man thomas socialist candidate received one vote the poll could hardly be called a true reflection of lehigh senti ment since only 39 out of more than 300 students cast ballots experts attributed the slight vote to the fact that the ballots had to be signed on the night before the national election student political leaders were asked to make last minute statements homer gross a prom inent leader of lehigh men for roosevelt declared we will win bob mertz president of the le high student republication asso ciation said we have done our best to convince the intelligent in dependent citizen that he should vote for dewey with the campaign behind them the political groups began to tally the cost of their activities mertz's group announced that it spent 31 for advertising the democrat's expense account ran to 15 neith er side violated the hatch act arcadia prom hailed as big success 200 couples enjoy dick smith's music grace hall scene of many suc cessful and enjoyable dances in past years is breathing easy fol lowing the arcadia dance of no vember 4th the dance featured music by dick smith and his or chestra a very good dance band from easton and about 200 cou ples found music to their taste whether slow dreamy ballads or hot fast jump numbers the dance was a semi-formal affair with the girls dressed in their loveliest evening attire and a handful of boys braving tuxs the inter-semester vacation pre vented the astp members of le high from attending the dance but all branches of the service were represented adequately dick smith had a well balanced band with a smooth working sax section and an even better brass combination the trumpet section featured a fine soloist who did no bly with such songs as duke el lington's boy meets horn and star dust the lovers of the slower type of song also found plenty of num bers to their liking the vocalist had a rich quality and a jazz feel ing to her voice that had many of the boys momentarily forgetting their dates grace monday no vember 6 and elected officers for the coming semester men elected were martin brossman m e feb 45 president joseph ren gert i e j 45 vice-president willard murray m e j 45 sec retary lido lacocca i e 45 treasurer a joint meeting is planned to be held with other engineering so cieties on the campus in three weeks to hear a lecture on var iable area flow meters refresh ments will be served and new m.e and i.e freshmen desiring mem bership are urged to attend curtis at meeting of eastern ass'n of deans mr george curtis lehigh uni versity registrar will attend a meeting on november 25 of the eastern association of deans of which he is a member and an ex ecutive committeeman the meet ing will be held in the hotel new yorker and the theme will be providing educational facilities for veterans on the preceding friday there will be a meeting of the middle atlantic states as sociation of colleges and secon dary schools rutgers tops lehigh eleven in hard fight granese stands out as engineers lose 19 to 6 by warren fox the lehigh football eleven again went down in defeat but this time they went down fighting the fi nal score stood at 19-6 but this doesn't tell the true story two bad misplays by lehigh punt re ceivers and a bit of poor football generalship accounted for all three of the scarlet markers lehigh's score which was the culmination of a 60 yard desperate passing at tack came in the last minutes of play granese stars for lehigrh the sparkling backfield work running and blocking of al gran ese gave the lehigh team what it has lacked so far this season granese and policy among various publications and provide a medium of discussion for those interested in journalism as a fu ture and in the improvement of collegiate journalism as a whole the lehigh chapter of the pi delta epsilon was inaugurated in 1923 with the heads of the brown and white and the epitome auto matically becoming members of this organization the highest ranking active member is the sec retary bob treser the former president tony fortosis and the former treasurer fritz yon ber gen have graduated from lehigh only last semester the four other remaining active members of this society and especially the faculty should have enough experience and presence of mind to remove their hats the building was erected as a memorial to the lehigh dead of the last war and it should be honored by
