has been presented to a lehigh audience within the past year although not as polished as the hedgerow presentation of the emperor jones the dramatic workship presentation does not compare unfavorably with the for mer despite the half-filled auditori um ah wilderness was popu lar — just as well received as the emperor jones perhaps the le high man liked the play saturday night because it satirizes middle class life and adolescence and is a pleasant mixture of sex and humor but the play was a little too long and a little too heavy to com pletely satisfy the student body one of the best actors we have seen at lehigh for quite a while is dwight longley who played the main role of richard miller also convincing were donald layton francis zavis kathryn wohlbach and lois jenkins who represent ed respectively near-dypsomaniac prostitue maid and housewife good performances were given by tom mekeel joyce heller dave osborn and eleanor lewis most of the minor characters were well-cast and played their parts effectively the parts in fact were played almost too well for throughout the play many of the actors preferred to let the lines fall where they may instead of sticking to the or iginal script nevertheless no cues were missed and what the play lost in authenticity it gained in spontaneity use skeletonized setting the scenic problems as the pro gram stated were solved by a skeletonized and impressionistic setting the combination of a bar room scene and a parlor room scene into one did not seem to hurt the play the usual psychological impression was very effective as the spotlight shifted from the ado lescent with a girl on his knee to his family worrying about his wel fare one of the most generally ex pressed criticisms was that the play took three and a half hours ending at 11:50 p.m this accounts for many persons leaving before the final act for the bethlehem bars close at midnight saturdays luckring receives award dr thomas prepares for worst here's one man lectured on the origin of ancient mathematics at the meeting of pi mv epsilon na tional honorary mathematics soci ety last friday evening about 40 students members of the faculty and faculty wives attended the meeting . professor neugebauer explained the difficulty in first creating math ematics from nothingness he pointed out that in 3000 b.c it was an accomplishment for the phar oahs to be able to count with the aid of lantern slides he compared the egyptian and babylonian num ber system the egyptian sym bols somewhat analagous to the roman made for a rather clumsy system especially when it came to fractions these numerical com plications severely limited calcula tions the babylonians employed a lo gical system to the base 60 they were able to understand linear and quadratic equations for algebra problems they had multiplication tables and algebra problems in scribed on cunieform tablets a large number of which are at yale university professor neugebauer next dealt briefly with the different greek approach and their unrelated con tribution of geometry wild life in pennsylvania was described by randolph h thompson lecturer for the penn sylvania game commission other animals in the state a portion of the films were also devoted to various types of plant life found in pennsylvania people working for national de fense according to thompson should relieve the have seen at lehigh for quite a while is dwight longley who played the main role of richard miller also convincing were donald layton francis zavis kathryn wohlbach and lois jenkins who represent ed respectively near-dypsomaniac prostitue maid and housewife good performances were given by tom mekeel joyce heller dave osborn and eleanor lewis most of the minor characters were well-cast and played their parts effectively the parts in fact were played almost too well for throughout the play many of the actors preferred to let the lines fall where they may instead of sticking to the or iginal script nevertheless no cues were missed and what the play lost in authenticity it gained in spontaneity use skeletonized setting the scenic problems as the pro gram stated were solved by a skeletonized and impressionistic setting the combination of a bar room scene and a parlor room scene into one did not seem to hurt the play the usual psychological impression was very effective as the spotlight shifted from the ado lescent with a girl on his knee to his family worrying about his wel fare one of the most generally ex pressed criticisms was that the play took three and a half hours ending at 11:50 p.m this accounts for many persons leaving before the final act for the bethlehem bars close at midnight saturdays luckring receives award dr thomas prepares for worst here's one man
