lehigh university brown and white vol 83 - no 20 bethlehem pa tuesday november 16 1971 866 - 033 1 bonfire to brighten south mountain again by peggy kittek after a three year niatus the lehigh lafayette bonfire will once again brighten the south mountain night sky the revival of the traditional rally will highlight the pre-game festivities on friday a small parade will be held shortly after 6 p.m to signal the beginning of the rally the marching 97 will parade from lamberton hall through the freshman quad the centennial complex and rhio it is hoped that a large throng of students will follow the band to the front of taylor gym five busses will transport the band and students to saucon valley by 7 p.m upperclassmen with cars are urged to help by bringing students to the rally area at approximately 7:15 p.m the steckbeck spectacular will unite student spirit at the stamp out spots rally master of cer monies prof john steckbeck will once again be m fine form by leading cheers and spreading his contagious enthusiasm steck says i go gung-ho all the time friday night should prove no exception the bonfire will be lit at 8 p.m with the band sounding lehigh's favorite fight songs plans have been made for concessions m the rally area at 8:30 the busses will bring students back to campus for the concert sponsored by the student activities council edgar winter's white trash and king crimson will per form m grace hall at 9 p.m the building of the bonfire has taken the form of a campus cleanup spare lumber broken tree limbs discarded furniture and anything flammable is being collected by the freshman clas . the pennsylvania power and light company of allentown has provided the center pole for the colossal heap at a meeting m grace hall monday night freshmen were introduced tc the wood collection procedures and building regulations traditionally the freshmen class has shown above is past group of freshman constructing a bonfire the bonfire returns to lehigh activities at 8 p.m friday m saucon valley five busses — will provide transportation for the band and some students to the valley the rally will highlight the pre lafayette game festivities campaign launched for senior class gift by patrick fekula this year our campaign will stress involvement because the money given will be put to use for a crucial and immediate need while we are still at lehigh said richard koby vice-chairman of the class of 1972 gift committee the committee with chairman oldrich foucek will be meeting sunday nov 21 to organize a two and one-half week campaign m an effort to raise money for a class gift the campaign will start dec 2 and run until deo 17 with volunteers trying to solicit pledge cards from all seniors seniors will be pledging 20 for the next 20 years when the class gift matures the senior class of 1992 will spend the money on the relative needs of the univer sity at that time this year the class gift of the class of 52 will mature if a representative number of seniors pledge cards are signed the officers of the class of 52 will turn their money over to the class of 72 to spend on what they feel the university needs it is important that we solicit a certain number of pledges before receiving the gift koby continues because we have to convince the officers of the class of 52 that we are contributing the committee is recommending the money which is m excess of 100,000 be used to set up a scholarship fund we would like to set up some sort of program where we will get a maximum amount of worth out of it koby went on the scholarships if approved will be awarded m march 1972 to members of the freshman class that will be enter ing lehigh m sept 1972 the committee has been split into three sub-committees with koby as head of the investment sub-committee jeff diamond publicity and glen franck solicitations one member of the committee will be put m charge of each housing unit for personal solicitations doug sheffer is m charge of greater involvement by this year's class on sunday the committee will meet to organize a two and one-half week fund-raising campaign coeds in fraternities is contrary to university policy says quay by jill frey the housing of women m fraternities is contrary to university policy said dean william i qur m a letter to all fraternity presidents this statement came m answer to the questions arising from the university's new coed status the fraternities were faced with policy decisions which were postponed quay issued this edict m response to a request from dean ruth a hurley she asked that fraternities be forbidden from rushing coeds at least during the first year of the coeducational experiment one of her major reasons for this request was that the already small group of female students should not be divided among the many fraternities on campus she also acknowledged the fraternities need to study various possibilities and to contact the national fraternities on their stands quay requested the appointment of a commission ny the interfraternity council ifc to investigate possible degrees of affiliation results of the commission's studies and recommendations will be presented to dean quay by feb 1 1972 accord ing to dean quay the committee is doing a really good job john hell 72 president of sigma chi and chairman of this commission gave some explanation as to the present functions of the committee he emphasized that this was not a decision making body but rather a committee that is supposed to investigate the various facets of the problem and make suggestions according to their findings a good deal of the research being done by this commission will be through the use of questionnaires these questionnaires will be distributed to students and the
