lehigh university brown and white vet 81 - no 2 —'<" — — aaawaa | mi """»»' ii"»"inhi«i etnleneh pa friday sept i ih ' 866-0331 university adopts policy on student demonstrations the university has adopted a formal policy on student dissent the set of regu lations concerning demonstrations , pro tests and university disciplinary proce dures on activities which violate the new guidelines was passed by the faculty at it's june meeting the regulations consist of three state ments 1 free inquiry and free expression including open dissent are indispensable in at academic community 2 coercive actlvlties...to repress or to demonstrate dissent_-are a threat to the academic community 3 where physical coercion is employ ed or physical obstruction persists end the university is prevented from resolv ing the matter through its established disciplinary procedures legal sanctions will be employed in its guidelines for demonstrations the policy defines an orderly and peaceful demonstration as one which does not interfere with legitimate university func tions such functions include dining and health services administrative and ser vice functions and on-campus recruitment free passage to any individuals carrying out such functions is never to be denied an advisory group on dissent consisting of four faculty and four student members has been established to assist the presi dent in determining whether a particu lar protest or demonstration has exceeded the permissible limits such conduct will be met with university sanctions or in extreme cases civil arrest and prose cution b&w photo by deason don parsons none monhait and larry mackovlak get down to the business ef running arcadia xxiii lack of funds causes review off dorm plans by bill chastain uncertain state financial assistance and unexpected high cont rue tion bids hare forced tbe university to " review plans for two proposed housing projects university officials disclosed this weak that the bids received for the proposed undergraduate dorms on upper taylor field were considerably higher than anticipated no exact figures were made available ia addition pennsylvania's financial assistance tn that project and in the graduate housing project in the monocacy creek urban renewal area under the hill-to-hlll bridge has become a quest ion mark ._ funding for the graduate housing pro ject was approved last february through 7.16 million tea-exempt bond financing by the pennsylvania higher education facilities authority pre fa experimental seminars begun for 60 freshmen by cuff deitcu fc oa many college campuses in the past year students have been highly critical of traditional academic policies they have been calling for greater relevancy in curricula more voice in course dir ection and smaller classes at lehigh the faculty has responded to the criticisms of arcadia president dan parsons among others by starting a freshmen seminar program five semi nars at the freshman level have begun tms semester course offerings and their respective professors include fs 97 a modes of conflict resolution robert jooee associate professor of social relations - fs 97-b " man and his man-made world wayne kraft professor of metellurgy fs 67-cl h the individual and the or ganization frank colon associate pro fessor of government fs 97-d en vironment crises everett macnamara resident professor of marine science since the program ia in the experi ments stage enrollment ia being limited a total of sixty students are participating in the seminars twelve la each of five courses incoming freshmen were informed by mail of the program and course offerings interested freshmen were requested to indicate first second and third course preferences the three colleges in the university were allotted a quota of participating students baaed on the percentage of fresh men registered to each lewis position related on open meeting issue by dee mcallister at arcadia's first meeting of the year don parsons president informed the sol ons that president w demming lewie feels that arcadia's spring statement in lavor of student demands that students be regularly allowed to attend faculty meet ings goes too far last may several students attended a faculty meeting which waa cloeed to stu dents responding to the incident arca dia drew up a statement urging that any member of the university community be allowed to attend a faculty meeting the motion also advised the faculty t o allow such guests courtesy of the floor at some point during the meeting the third part recognized the right of the faculty to hold closed meetings when delicate issues of concern only to the faculty have to be discussed the faculty promised to consider tbe motion but tabled it until november and in the meantime sent to ed pol for fur fur study at that time dr lewis said speak ing as an individual and not for the facul ty , i cannot see any major objection to open meetings as a result of a recent meeting with the president however parsons feels that dr lewis believes that the motion goes too far and that he would like to see stu dents invited to faculty meetings only on occassion continuing his report parsons asserted that arcadia must make a study for the purpose of reviewing the entire universi ty decision making process with students assuming much more responsibility in tbe power structure then they presently have been given a committee will be estab lished in the near future for this purpose in other business bruce berzin report ed that this fall a trial period for concerts since they have been consistent ly losing money also jack shehab is working for a full-day festival around the flag pole oct four with many girls being bussed in for the event for new business the solans approved a motion to backstop 50 percent of all losses after the first 150 in the inter faith council production of st joan finally arcadia decided to bow out of tbe association of student governments meeting to be held in washington d.c this weekend the group decided that there was not much to learn from speakers such as secretary of health education and welfare finch that they could not reed in the newspapers former b&w editor named to succeed drew pearson former brown and white editor las whitten 50 haa been tapped for one of the most powerful journalistic positions in the world whitten will collaborate with jack anderson in producing the drew pearson column washington merry go-round which is syndicated in over 500 news papers anderson chose whitten a top notch investigative washington reporter for hearst over dozens of available " muck rakers whitten who is teaching creative con cepts 101 a 3 creative writing here at lehigh this semester was not available for comment confirmation of whitten s appointment was obtained from prof j b mcfadden chairman of the division of journalism his former lehfgh teacher and now co professor in cc-101-a-3 mcfadden said yes ips true he phoned me before breakfast one day last week about it and i told him he'd be crazy to pass it up whitten was assistant bureau manager washington for hearst newspapers he usually covered capitol hill and the white house he ordinarily accompanied the president on trips but not always . for example last rammer he covered the ted kennedy tragedy at chappaquiddlk this semester as usual prof whitten will offer his creative writing course in prof mc fadden s living room he com mutes by plane every friday afternoon prof whitten is the author of two novels , " progeny of the adder and " moon of the wolf both of which have sold to the movies after sell-outs here in canada and in england he also wrota the nature book pinion • the golden eagle a defense of conservation the first draft of ms third novel is finished prof whitten is also a translator of the poetry of beaudelaire and former news director of radio free europe see dorm page 8 seniors senior assessments of 18 can now be sent to box 10a after sept 80 the assessment will rise to 30 all checks . should be made payable to lehigh university epitome at -
