brown and white vol 78 - no 1 bethlehem pa wednesday september 14 1966 866-0331 welcome class of 1970 smoker to end frosh activities if the past years are any indication free corn rob pipes and tobacco will be presented to all the frosh at the annual " smoker tonight at 7:20 p.m in grace hall in addition the senior judge for the united states court of appeals in philadelphia j cullen ganey will head the guest speaker list also par ticipating in the festivities are football coach fred dunlap wrestling coach gerry leeman and two time national collegiate wrestling champion mike caruso while frosh puff away on the free pipes prof john steckbeck steck will lead the singing and cheering with probable shouts of " freshmen what class is this to which the answer is tra ditionally screamed back dr frank g kear of chevy chase md president of lehlgh's national alumni association will then give a short speech to the class of 1970 the class of 70 will be " adopted by the members of the class of 1920 j h wagner 20 new i.d cards needed for fall a new identification card sys tem for all students undergrad uate and graduate has been adopted at the university for the 1966-67 academic year to cope with the multiple uses there will be two cards for stu dents and staff this year there are no changes ln the permanent faculty i d cards the one new student card which will be a permanent card during the entire association of the student with the university will be the official i d card this card will be on white stock encased ln plastic and will entitle the student the use of the lib rary admission to specifically announced activities and events and to vote in arcadia elections though the official i d card is permanent it must be validated each semester at the bursar's office the second new student card which will be issued annually will be a student athletics card this card on pink stock this year entitles the student to free ad mission to home intercollegiate athletic contests except for tournaments and championships the athletics card must also be validated each spring semes ter at the bursar's office also each spring on dates an nounced ln advance mr arthur groff the new audio-visual tech nician in the office of public information will take photo graphs for the following year's athletics card graduate students who qualify under new university regulations also will receive the two cards free of charge the regulations are that graduate students must be registered for nine hours or more of graduate course work in the semester for which the card ls valid or that teaching and research assistants must be on half-time appointments or more graduate students who do not planned library named for the mart family lehigh's planned engineering and science library will be na med ln honor of two alumni the late leon t mart and the late thomas l mart the 1,500,000 library will be known as the mart memorial library mrs leon t mart of shawnee mission kan the widow of the late leon t mart and mother of the late thomas l mart was the largest single contributor to the library the exact amount of the gift was not publicized the ground-breaking cere monies will be in late 1966 the new library ls part of the uni versity's 22 million centennial development program the new library will hold 150 000 books of these 85,000 will come from the old library when these books on engineering mathematics and natural and phy sical sciences are transferred to the new library more space will become available for books from other fields of study in the old library there are now 12,000 books added annually to lehigh's library system one of the features of the li brary will be a separate labor atory area for study and experimentation particularly in the information sciences leon t mart was graduated from lehigh in 1923 with a degree in the field of engineering he later founded the marley com pany ln kansas city mo and was president of the firm until his death ln 1959 he was born ln 1891 in portland maine his son the late thomas l mart was a victim of an auto mobile crash ln colorado in 1949 while a student at lehigh he was on an uranium hunt at the time b&w staff candidates meet today candidates for the fall semes ter brown and white staff should obtain add-drop forms from the journalism division office in the university center basement as they register today these forms must also be approved by the candidates curriculum director there will be a short meeting for all candidates in the news room u.c co6 between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m today applications for the brown and white staff will be accepted until student activities night monday september 19 new library - lehigh's planned science and engineering library is shown in an artist's conception tha new facility cost ing 1,500,000 will ba known as the mart memorial library in honor of two late alumni see dink page 8 see new page 8
