brown and white vol 78 - no 6 bethlehem pa friday october 7 1966 ___„ 866-0331 fund proposal reaction mixed the arcadia reserve fund proposal has met mixed reaction from the class cabinets of 68 and 69 and rhc the proposal which would provide funds through taxation of revenues from university events was approved by the two class cabinets rhc defeated the measure in favor of a proposal of its own all but one member of the 60 man sophomore class cabinet voted in favor of the fund sophomore class president casey cogut and the class of 69»s arcadia representative aldo bortn both urged cabinet members to register a " yes vote borin stated that in the past " groups were afraid to bring in any big names for fear of a loss before the vote arcadia treasurer d'arcy roper 67 answered questions about the fund at the rhc meeting the proposal in its present form was re jected rhc president henry berger said his group was in favor of the reserve fund in principle but they favored the sale of student activity discount cards instead of the tax any money from the sale of the cards would go into a " reserve fund — the cardholders would be allowed discounts on the performances covered by such a fund the fantasticks touring company will present their internationally acclaimed show this tuesday night in grace hall the tom jones-harvey schmidt musical is the longest run ning off-broadway show in history redevelopment begun despite a past beset with many differences of opinion between the city of bethlehem and the uni versity le high's redevelopment program has stepped into high gear north of the campus in the last seve r a 1 years lehigh and bethlehem have engaged in a series of debates some heated over the specific areas north of packer avenue which the university intended to develop the debates are gone the work has begun crews of bulldozers wrecking cranes dump trucks and men of geppert bros co of colmar converged on the area within the last week and have begun demol ishing building and clearingaway 1 the rubble the specific vicinity designa ted for work at the present time is nearly three blocks square and is bounded by adams street on the east brodhead avenue on the west packer avenue on the south and morton street on the north the area between brodhead avenue and vine street and morton street and packer avenue belongs to lehigh according to paul j frantz vice president for development the land will be used for a library and an arts complex the ground for the library will be broken next spring the land between vine street and adams street and packer avenue and morton street is owned by the bethlehem school district all of the houses once they are cleared of occupants will be demolished with the exception of st peter's lutheran church and broughal junior high school the process will take 18 months john strohmeyer editor of the bethlehem globe times pointed up the reason for this discontent noting that " many people still feel there was not enough thought given to alter nate sites for buildings before the tearing down of existing structures began ( haw photo by mccaffrry work has begun on the former residential areas north of the campus inspite of the disat isfaction of the displaced bethlehemites much of the newly cleared land will be used for the hall of liberal arts and the engineering library mitchell trio here tomorrow night the mitchell trio will headline the rutgers weekend concert scheduled at 8 p.m tomorrow sponsored by the class of 68 the program will also feature the moppet ts joe frazier mike kobluk and john denuer made their first stage appearance in 59 since then they have spoken their minds in song in the spirit of wandering student minstrels the trio originated at gonzaga university in spokane washington in their first year they sang for campus groups clubs and parties in the spokane area their rood friend father helnard beaver helped procure engagements for them when beaver had to leave for new york to attend an army chaplain's training course he suggested that the trio accompany him they did and obtained their first professional engagement at new york's blue angel supper club since then the group has become an attraction all a rnss the country at scores of colleges and at such nightclubs as the drake hotel in chicago the hungry 1 in san francisco the crescendo in hollywood and basin street fast in new york city they have appeared on numerous television shows including the bell telephone hour the ed sullivan show the tonight show hullabaloo hootenanny the mike douglas show and the satirical that was the week that was they have recorded ten albums to date and are planning their next the mitchell trio wilt perform on saturday night in grace hall the nationally known group will appear with the moppets an all girl quartet from mt holyoke in the rutgers week end concert sponsored by the class of 68 arcadia votes to undertake theater drive arcadia voted wednesday to circulate a petition among students and faculty members calling for immediate considera tion of a theater for the perform ing arts at lehigh " our object is to gtt a theater much higher up on the priority list for new buildings said marty cohen 68 we want to get a tremendous undercurrent working in this direction he added the arcadians felt that the major problem they face is con vincing th administration
