sunday lehigh men will have the opportunity of hearing dr e sparks president of penn state at the y m c a meeting dr sparks has been president oi penn state efr many years and has been instrumental in placing that institution in its present place of eminence he has always been an extremely popular college president and has the support of his entire student body back of him needless to say dr sparks has an especial appeal to college men it is a distinction to have him come here and it is hoped that a large number of students will avail them selves of this chance to hear a reai addiress dr sparks has been prominent in educational matters longer than most of us have lived and in 1909 had the degree of l l d comferr ed on him by lehigh university alumni of pain state and all in teiested are cordially invited be sides the address mr harry ii zvliller will sing several solos the sophomore cotillion club held 1 its first meeting of the year in drowm hall wednesday evening the purpose of the meeting was to elect twenty-five men from the present sophomore class these twenty-five men will in turn elect an equal number more at a later date the niames of the men elected by the junior members is given be low : no definite plans have been made for dances since the incoming sophomores will have entire charge of them the night of the penn state game has been suggested as a possible date all indications point to another banner year for the lehigh stickmen to j date 42 men have reported tor practice 16 of which were meo'i i bus of last year's squad fwenry ix of the squad are new men and these men under the coaching of capt mau.er who is assisted m his work by the veterans of last year's team are fast being rounded into shape and are being taught the fundamentals of the game there are many men whose efforts are de voted at present to other forms of athletic activity but they are ex i pected to report for practice later | in the season practice is regu larly being held on monday tues day and thursday afternoons with a scrimmage oni tuesday the scrimmage last tuesday showed the new men are rapidly learn ing the gaime and that the old men i are getting back to their old>-time i form big send-off to lehign " football warriors tonight at 6:45 pre-medical society in process of formation coach kanaly will take his squad to easton tomorrow morning to compete in the lafayette cross country classic the prospects of a lehigh victory were very promis ing until it was learned that bray probably the best man on the team having won the trials last saturday will be unable to compete ini this race his loss will be greatly felt lafayette has a new six-mile course this year which compares very favorably with the lehigh course the brownr and white squad will leave in the morning on the 8 20 o'clock car > the men chosen to make the trip are : fan cher rodgers gerktch erb leis ter esterman brugimann mcnul ty schwarzbach underwood van billiard and pumphrey twelve all told as to who will be the victor in this race is a matter of conjecture as it is the first meet of the season for lehigh in years past lafa yette was always counted upon to | put a strong representation of run j ners in the field and this year will | probably be no exception coach bruce will choose eight out oi the following twelve harriers to repre sent lafayette tomorrow tracey kemper heisler vandyne ad ams gilbert crawford mcfall marvin sampson barnes and grupelli basket-ball schedule tonight at 6 as the students of lebigh will have an opportunity of gathering at the flag-pole on the campus and showing the lehigh football team that they are with them all the way through by marching down to the jersey cen tral station and giving the team a rousing send-off this will be the last chance this year for the stud ent body to turn out and seyud the lehigh team to a foreign soil and it should be the one time in the sea son that every man in college should turn out the team has played wonderful football ever since the opening game of the sea son amd if they are expected to play real football against the strong w and j eleven the students will have to instill them with that old jip amd pep that wins the games chinese eleven formed the first call for the plungers and divers trying out for the swimming team has been made by coach mahoney and in response only a few men thus far have answered the call and most of these are last year's men lehigh is assured of having two good diver's this year to take the place of stewart of last year's fame the men referred to are anderson amd straub who both have attained a high proficiency in the art of the two anderson is showing up the best and great thing's may be expected of him on the other haod strauib is cer tain of making anderson exert himself with two such good men lehigh should make itself noticed in this event the turnout of plungers up to the present time is poor as only a few men have reported of these underwood 23 is showing up very well and under the tutelage of coach mahoney should develop ac cordingly the remainder of the swimming team will be called out next week and an urgent appeal is made to those who can swim well enough to try for the team to come out at the first call so that a line may be gotten on all the interested men chapel selections there is on foot at the present fcime a movement to organize a new society at lehigh this new so ciety is to be composed of men who are studying medicine amd who are taking pre-mediical work a pre-medical society should be come a reality as the number of men matriculating each year im this course is growing larger and larg er and this year witnesses the larg est number of any preceding year it is thought that with this so ciety the pre-medical course can be made much more interesting and instructive as it is proposed to have learned doctors and surgeons f ron the various medical schools to come to lehiigh and give lectures as is done toy the e e society the ch e society etc it is also thought that trips might be arranged to take in the local hos pital's amd some more distant and ini this way bring in closer touch the pre-med man with his actual life's work a meeting is to be held in cop pee hall this afternoon at 4 and it is hoped and expected that all men taikirag the pre-med course will be on hamd to help organize this champions are especially bright since the appearance of coach murphy on the field the soccer squad has progressed rapidly while several of last year's men are in college the competition for positions is keen and the lineup for the first game is uncertain manager burgess has announced the entry of the soccer team in the bethlehem and district soccer as sociation and a schedule of games is being prepared nine amateur organizations of this vicinity have entered the league in competition for the wilbur cup and the brown and white eleven will meet the following teams : bethlehem ship building every year coach mor row develops his team to the great est efficiency head coac^i morrow has been putting the squad through a gruel ling practice including even the fundamentals of the game the men have been practicing tackling the dummy falling on the ball catchinig punts anid working the charging machine the players have been put through stiff signal drills as none of their men were in jured during the geneva game the cripples are coming around in shape again and the team is sure to be at its maximum strength by tomorrow likewise the brown and white eleven is in first-class shape and although the rochester game was a walk-away the eleven show ed a greater superiority in playing than at anytime this season the weak spots have doubtlesisly been strengthened and the former mis takes rectified by now coach keady has been putting the men through extensive signal drills in order to smooth out any possible kinks in the machine dif ferent from most college coaches keady does not believe in many scrimmages when a team knows the fundamentals this week there fore there was but one scrimmage and none of the players sustained amy injuries the scrubs were well coached on the w and j plays and were used against the varsity on wednesday during the scrimmage all of the varsity m e n showed up well henzlenian was right om the job ripping holes through the line and acting as a stone wall on the de fense capt herringtan played in his usual good form and larkin tore things up in regular fashion gulick the other end seems as de pendable as ever and goldman the center handled the ball in excep tionally fine form the whole line worked in a unison that was pret ty to watch continued on page four while the brown and white team were polishing up the husky washington and jefferson been trying to get a game with the i^afayette freshmen but as yet has received ruo definite answer it is supposed that the lafayette fresh man team has been disbanded since no response has been made is said that a number of the new men are good players and it is certain that a berth on the team will mean much work and real ability an all^chiniese soccer team prob ably the first ever organized in this country will invade soccer circles here with the opening of the local district soccer league saturday af ternoon this became apparent when final organization was effect ed and c wey formerly a chinese student at lehigh mow employed at the offices of the bethlehem shipbuilding corporation attend ed the meeting and made applica tion for entry while at lehligh wey was a la crosse player and also worked out with the soccer squad he was un able to announce the personnel of the team but promised to have a complete and all-chinese lineup on the field for the first game against the shipbuilders on saturday sev eral chinese are employed in the same offices with wey and in addi tion to these he expects to muster several from the university and fill up the open positions with three or four students from the univer sity of pennsylvania the combined musical clubs are trying to arramge for a three-day concert at the opera house ami also a trip to pittsburg nothing definite can be reported as yet the glee club held a rehearsal on wednesday night and consider able progress was made with the difficult parts of the pieces which they are now practicing and which will be used later
