brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96-no 11 • 215)861-4184 friday october 12 1984 fraternities debate need to check ids at parties by liz carr in an effort to eliminate possi ble confrontations between lehigh students and local resi dents, some fraternities have begun to question party quests if they are university students campus police has been checking cars for lehigh ids and stickers upon entrance to the sayre park gates to reduce the number of vehicles on the hill campus police chief eugene dax said the identification checks however have not been very effective in keeping down the number of non-lehigh stu dents on the hill he said that although the checks may cut down the problem they do not eliminate it we cannot really prevent people from coming into sayre park by foot a lot of times people who are not from lehigh go into the fraternity parties and are asked to leave we go up the hill frequently to escort these people out of par ties because some will leave by verbal request but others require physical force dax said the car check which is in effect on friday and saturday nights from 9 p.m until 1 a.m was started at lehigh about seven years ago according to dax this system has mainly been effective in cutting down the numbers of automobile acci dents that occur on the hill the park only holds so many vehicles and if too many are there the roads become unsafe when we did not check ids about seven years ago on a typi cal weekend we would have about five or six accidents dax said now we usually only have one or less according to mike boyd coordinator of greek affairs the fraternities will basicaly have to make the decision them selves on whether or not to enforce the id check system in the last month and a half we have had 18 reports about non-lehigh students that have involved the campus police the gate check works in a limited way but the most effec tive way would be to check ids at a party boyd said the problem is most of the fraterni ties want to be too nice it's hard to tell a person that they cannot come in and then tell another one that they can the fraterni ties should have the incentive to buckle down because of the problems they have been hav ing if they do not then they are really just punishing them selves some fraternity houses are more affected by townies coming to their parties than are other houses in order to reduce these frequent visits by the campus police some fraterni ties agree with the idea of hav ing id checks at the entrance of a house party we basically have more of a problem than a lot of other fra ternities do because we are on the lower hill psi upsilon president bob dunn said our main concerns are liability wise because if someone gets drunk and then injured we might get the blame we always have door duty so that if some one looks really strange we can stop them from coming in but i think it would work out well if paople had to show a college id the id check system accord ing to president jim suermann alpha tau omega is a good idea to enforce to some extent we are asking for id's from people who do not look like uni versity students other than that if people are willing to be responsible individuals then they are welcome to come to our parties suermann said last year kappa alpha was involved in an incident that resulted in bethlehem residents being sent to the hospital with a broken jaw the individual had been politely asked to leave the party according to ka presi dent brian o'connell after being asked three times to leave the townie threw a glass of beer at one of the brothers a fight broke out and the townie ended up in the hospital with a broken jaw according to o'connell this incident could have been prevented had the house checked ids the individ ual would never have entered the house the whole thing could have been avoided i think it is a very good idea that security is check ing ids at the gate because it definitely has cut down the number of townies coming in to our parties o'connell said but for the system to really be effective ids should be checked at the door the university has basically done all they can do the rest is up to us despite these positive opin ions regarding an id check at parties some fraternities who said they have not had any prob lems with the local residents said that this could ruin the atmosphere of lehigh parties stadium tailgate ban elicits mixed reaction by liz beezer the prohibition of student tailgates in taylor stadium lots has elicited mixed reactions among students senior class president tom healy said he could see the adminis tration's point of view as he thought some recent tailgating has gotten out hand however he also thought the administration should have warned us about the rule rather than not allowing them tailgates at all he added the senior class had a first ever home tailgate or an away game and there was no problem junior class president ken fiurst said it was not that bad of a rule but i wish they would have notified us sooner he received notice of the rule in the mail thursday it was in effect as of that saturday's game the junior class had scheduled and received approval to hold tailgates at every home game they will now be held in the parking lot across from the physical plant sophomore class president jim ash said they were also plannng a tailgte which must now be relocated tailgating is part of lehigh life and if there's any way of getting it back i'd sure like to try he said «»—-.»•— „ cheers b&w photo by rob sternlieb freshmen elaine berrier and david
