to seven freshmen whom he will meet individually whenever they feel the need of advice the freshman's main interest is determined during the days of orientation by personal inter view he is then assigned to an advisor who is an instructor in the field in which the student's interest centers interviews between student and advisor are strictly confiden tial even though the student may be arrested he can apply to his advisor for help and be sure of getting it and at the same time be sure that the dean will not be notified the main purpose of the sys tem is to get the freshmen to feel at home it is hoped that the high school conception of an instructor may be done away with and that the men will re alize early in their college career the companionship that may exist between at the state homeopathic hospital in ritters ville as guests of the hospital authorities they were afforded the opportunity of observing 12 clini cal cases representing different types of mental cholic psychosis various forms of dementia precox morons and mi cro-cephalic the case of micro-cephalic was that of a man 42 years old with a mental development of a child three years of age he could not count but would repeat whatever heard although he did not compre hend the meaning of the statement a boy 19 years old was exhibited as an illustration of a moron he broke a store window in order to ■procure a pair of pants although he realized that it wast wrong to commit this theft he did not know the reason for his doing it except that he needed a pair of pants joe a boy 12 years old was shown as an example of enciphal letic this disease is located in the brain but effected his motor func tions so that he walked stiffly and not quite symetrically another case was that of general paralysis due to syphilis the patient was continually happy however and be lieved himself worth a great deal of money which he was willing to give to anyone who would take it the victim of epilepsy shown was subject to violet fits and hallucina tions but nevertheless could talk clearly his greatest difficulty was the fact that he could not explain the objects which he saw in his hallucinations peter an illustration of alcoholic psychosis imagined that all sorts of creatures were crawling over him since he has almost entirely recovered from this sickness and is expected to be able to leave in the near future this case is an exam ple of the excellent work done by the hospital authorities the last cases were all of demen tia precox these cases were pure ly childish in their symptoms the completing the course at the com mand general staff school nor mally his tour of duty would ter minate in june 1928 but at the re quest of president c r richards the war department has extended his first trans-oceanic air mail stamp in the university was received wednes day october 17 by art landis at the a t o house it was mailed in hamburg october 10 the stamp is rectangular in shape about three quarters of an inch high and about an inch longt it displays a picture of the huge graf zeppelin flying over a rela tively small earth there are in scriptions on all four sides across the top deutsche luft post on the left side america on the right side europe and across the bot tom 4 reichsmark philatilists have already offered to buy the stamp but art says he will save it until the price goes up president c r richards has re quested that the old libra»y pillars be preserved . as a result of this request mr litzenberger acting architect for vischer and birley plans on using them as bases or stands for busts which will be scat tered throughout the reading room of the ne wlibrary the same lucy m packer mem orial tablet will in all probability be placed in the floor of the vesti buildings other materials trom the old building such as the marble from the two north towers will be used as backing in the walls of the new building the cast iron shaft sup porting the spiral staircase in the towers will be turned over to the school to be used as sewer pipes un der the roads and about the cam pus the stairs will be scrapped but the shaft according to mr litzenberger is as good as when it was first installed the ivy that adorned the north wall is more than 50 years old and has been scattered from here to long island eugene w grace and mr visscher of visscher and birley and many others have tak en roots and have planted them about their homes many of the sturdier roots have been transplant ed temporarily to the arboretum and if they survive will be used to beautify the new library the first issue of the lehigh burr this season will be mailed today ac cording to bill adams editor the second burr will be the football number according to present plans one point of importance to the student body was made clear at the meeting of the burr staff wednes day oct 17 the faculty commit tee which is to judge the morality of this year's burr does not meet until april there is no faculty advisory committee which censors material prior to publication of fers for such censorship have been refused on the ground that the burr is wholly a student publica tion if the probation committee which is to be appointed by pres ident richards deams the jokes and cartoons in the coming issues too suggestive and stops publication of the burr it will not affect the numbers for this year no one will lose money or laughter by any ac tion of the faculty as the decision affects only next year's publication the three color cover for the probation number was drawn by lou brettner several last minute developments took place in the lehigh camp yes terda yafternoon it was definitely decided to revert to the huddle sys tem which austy had discarded last week and it was announced that elliott purvis and evers will not be available for tomorrow's game because of injuries elliott is still limping but is expected to report for practice monday while purvis is suffering from a concussion which he received in the gettys burg game and it will be a week or so at least before he will be in un iform again evers although his shoulder is rapidly improving will not be at its last meeting the construction of this building has always been advocated by president richards who has seen the need of a proper place in which to keep animals used in the study of bacteriology president rich ards in conjunction with the biolo gy department prepared a rough sketch of the proposed building which was submitted to the board of trustees for approval this sketch is to be used by 3aeq at the first meeting of the lehigh radio club held in the physics building last friday at 7:30 p m starting with the sending system he traced the entire procedure of broadcasting a message and finishing with the reverse process of reception the step by step procedure was very in teresting to the large number of new men present many of whom were freshmen the station which has been es tablished for five years has added new equipment each year until it is at present one of the best of colle giate broadcasters receipt of mes sages at a distance of 6000 miles has been acknowledged while ver ifications from the european con tinent have been numerous the meeting was in charge of the newly elected officers h g wiest president l k sowers vice pres idest charles easton secretary and guy woman treasurer at present the station is in oper ation every thursday friday and saturday night a code class has been established for the instruction of aspfring brass pounders the club is planning a big year men interested should get in touch with h g wiest field artillery was the subject of a talk by lt col clarence deems jr at the latest meeting of the scabbard and blade society held wednesday evening in the physics lecture room the speaker explained the many and varied functions that the present day artil lery is called upon to perform the lecture was illustrated throughout with numerous slides in order to be effective field ar tillery must cooperate with and re ceive the support of other branches of the service the infantry de pends to a great extent upon the ar tillery for protection but the ar tillery in turn often is dependent on other divisions for advice and information one important task of the artil lerymen is the spreading of pioson ous gases chlorine mustard and phosgene were the gases most gen erally used during the late war later developments i nclude the spreading of smoke screens by a specially constructed shell • contrary to the general belief the spreading of a barage is not the foremost task of the artillery but one of the minor tasks the bar age must be carefully planned so as not to prove more detrimental than helpful for this reason and because ti is extremely wasteful of amunition it is only used in a tight situation colonel deems is stationed at baltimore maryland and is the r o t c officer of the third corps area the colonel travels around visiting some forty colleges in his district and inspecting their de partments of military science and tactics at the conclusion of the lecture members of the society literally threw a party individual packages of ice cream being thrown about the audience wilburs erect tablet to memory of willis m h peterson has new office max heinrich peterson ph.d assistant professor of physics now has his office and laboratory on the third floor of the physics building to the left of the head of the stairs the office used last year jointly by dr peterson and dr martin is now occupied by dr martin the metallurgy department has added two new advanced courses one is in physical metallurgy met 72 taught by professor doan the other is in iron and steel met 52 taught by professor stoughton these fields are supplemented by outside reading in the current per iodicals in each scope covered these courses are open to advanc ed undergraduates and graduates and afford a broad field in the fun annual reception to the faculty at the president's house last tuesday evening over 200 members of the faculty were receiv ed this attendance is slightly larger than those of previous years day afternoon at four o'clock in packer hall the arcadia will su pervise the meeting and will take attendance there will be a compulsory meet ing of the freshman class on tues a tablet to the memory of fran cis macleod willis c e 28 pre sented by mr and mrs harry p wilbur has been placed on the south wall of the chapel near the side entrance mr willis was drowned last june after saving a small boy from the same fate his career at lehigh was one of accomplishment both in athletics and scholarship the tablet is sim ilar to the class tablets that occu py the chapel walls good body-mechanics means the correct poise and control of the body with the normal functioning of every organ the following characteristics are noted when the body is in the right position 1 the body is held as tall as pos sible without strain 2 head is erect chin in 3 shoulders are even 4 chest is elevated 5 abdomen flat 6 back curves within normal lim its 7 pelvis titled slightly upward in front downward in back 8 knees and hips are straight without strain 9 weight chiefly upon balls of feet 10 arms hanging easily from shoulders stories of the days of 94 when class rushes were really class rushes and the feud between the sopho mores and freshman was a life and death proposition throw interest ing light on how the sophomores ruled the lower classmen then it seems that it was the custom for the sophomores to pull one final trick on the freshmen after all the big events of the year were over they did this by publishing and posting in very prominent places about the campus sarcastic notices showing their contempt of the class beneath them one particular poster has come into the writer's hands through the courtesy of bert h wilson a jun ior at that time who sent it to w r (?). okeson in hopes it would have some value as a curiosity in the years to come the makeup of the little bulletin is designed to catch the attention by the use of brilliant green class numerals fad freshmen were not always regarded with deference ed into the background the con tents of the poster are as follows warts and slobs of 98 inasmuch as your efforts to obey the laws and to observe the regula tions enacted for your guidance by your acknowledged guardians the class of 97 have met with approval know ye that as a reward for your faithful obedience to these commands we hereby grant you the following privileges you may procure your class pic tures without our interference you may occasionally display the college colors on your person pro vided you do so in a manner be coming your simplicity you may remain try ing to locate the issues of the following dates in order to com plete its files october 11 1927 no 6 november 25 1927 no 18 january 24 1928 no 29 it would be appreciated if anyone having these papers would turn them in at the staff room in the basement of christ mas-saucon hall the brown and white grid machine including twenty-two players and the coaching staff leaves tonight to invade the lair of the princeton tiger tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p m last season the tigers sent the lehigh gridmen down to defeat to the tune of 42-0 but judging from the improvement shown in the brown and white team and also by the fact that virginia was able to hold princeton to a scoreless tie last saturday the tigers may not be able to repeat the performance this year princeton has been selected as an overwhelming favorite to win tomorrow afternoon but once before a lehigh eleven went to nassau with the orange and black a heavy favorite and when the final whistle blew neither team had been able to score princeton defeated vermont by an overwhelming score but her complete reversal of form against virginia makes it hard to estimate the strength of the nassau eleven the line is powerful and the back field consisting of wittmer miles jones and norman present a smooth working combination ed wittmer star back of last year proved that he has not lost any of his ability as a back and against vermont he was the star of the game scoring 19 points in last saturday's game he was also out standing and several times succeed ed in making long gains during the past week a number of changes have been made in the princeton line-up as a result of the virginia game one of the most important is that the tiger eleven will return to the huddle system princeton coaches believe that the cavaliers were able to interpret the signals the tigers also lost much time in getting their own signals but should the huddle system prove effective against lehigh it will be used regularly the huddle sys tem was first developed by coach roper in 1924 at that time the tiger was much caricatured by car toon and became known as the talkative tiger lehigh line averages 194 the lehigh team as well as princeton has been shaken up rad ical changes effected by austy tate last monday became more than a mere experiment as the week prog ressed and it is almost certain that jack kirkpatrick will be on one of the wing positions instead of his usual place at right tackle while either tom brennan or jack le vitz will be the other end tubby miller and r haas have been as signed to the tackle berth andy lehr and ed twigger as guards and tommy ayre at the pivot posi tion this is the heaviest line that has had in many years and verages about 194 pounds the brown and white backfield s still problematic since it is not ertain whether cowboy elliott will be able to play because of the ljury he received in the gettys burg game art davidowitz has been groomed to take his place and in the scrimmages which the brown nd white eleven has been put hrough this week he showed him elf a capable field general ellis oiler showed up so well in wed nesday's scrimmage when he almost cored a touchdown against the arsity that he will probably fill he place left vacant by tubby mil er's shift to the line offense built up for the past week the brown and white coaches have been concen trating on building an offense which was so lacking in the gettysburg game on tuesday the varsity scrimmaged the frosh and scored at will against the yearling team while on wednesday the first and second string men indulged in an other long dose of scrimmage but this time the varsity scored only one lone touchdown the twenty-two men who leave tonight will stay at the somerset hotel in somerville until tomorrow noon when they will be joined by eleven more men the entire team will have lunch at the hotel and from there will proceed to prince ton the first set of men with the coaches leave about seven o'clock tonight while the extra eleven men will start tomorrow morning at eight the probable lineup is as follows lehigh princeton j levitz le morrison w miller lt moore e twigger lg j caldwell t ayre c howe capt a cholic psychosis various forms of dementia precox morons and mi cro-cephalic the case of micro-cephalic was that of a man 42 years old with a mental development of a child three years of age he could not count but would repeat whatever heard although he did not compre hend the meaning of the statement a boy 19 years old was exhibited as an illustration of a moron he broke a store window in order shown as an example of enciphal letic this disease is located in the brain but effected his motor func tions so that he walked stiffly and not quite symetrically another case was that of general paralysis due to syphilis the patient was continually happy however and be lieved himself worth a great deal of money which he was willing to give to anyone who would take it the victim of epilepsy shown was subject to violet fits and hallucina tions but nevertheless could talk clearly his greatest difficulty was the fact that he could not explain the objects which he saw in his hallucinations peter an illustration of alcoholic psychosis imagined that all sorts of creatures were crawling over him since he has almost entirely recovered from this sickness and is expected to be able to leave in the near future this case is an exam ple of the excellent work done by the hospital authorities the last cases were all of demen tia precox these cases were pure ly childish in their symptoms the completing the course at the com mand general staff school nor mally his tour of duty would ter minate in june 1928 but at the re quest of president c r richards the war department has extended his first trans-oceanic air mail stamp in the university was received wednes day october 17 by art landis at the a t o house it was mailed in hamburg october 10 the stamp is rectangular in shape about three quarters of an inch high and about an inch longt it displays a picture of the huge graf zeppelin flying over a rela tively small earth there are in scriptions on all four sides across the top deutsche luft post on the left side america on the right side europe and across the bot tom 4 reichsmark philatilists have already offered to buy the stamp but art says he will save it until the price goes up president c r richards has re quested that the old libra»y pillars be preserved . as a result of this request mr litzenberger acting architect for vischer and birley plans on using them as bases or stands for busts which will be scat tered throughout the reading room of the ne wlibrary the same lucy m packer mem orial tablet will in all probability be placed in the floor of the vesti buildings other materials trom the old building such as the marble from the two north towers will be used as backing in the walls of the new building the cast iron shaft sup porting the spiral staircase in the towers will be turned over to the school to be used as sewer pipes un der the roads and about the cam pus the stairs will be scrapped but the shaft according to mr litzenberger is as good as when it was first installed the ivy that adorned the north wall is more than 50 years old and has been scattered from here to long island eugene w grace and mr visscher of visscher and birley and many others have tak en roots and have planted them about their homes many of the sturdier roots have been transplant ed temporarily to the arboretum and if they survive will be used to beautify the new library the first issue of the lehigh burr this season will be mailed today ac cording to bill adams editor the second burr will be the football number according to present plans one point of importance to the student body was made clear at the meeting of the burr staff wednes day oct 17 the faculty commit tee which is to judge the morality of this year's burr does not meet until april there is no faculty advisory committee which censors material prior to publication of fers for such censorship have been refused on the ground that the burr is wholly a student publica tion if the probation committee which is to be appointed by pres ident richards deams the jokes and cartoons in the coming issues too suggestive and stops publication of the burr it will not affect the numbers for this year no one will lose money or laughter by any ac tion of the faculty as the decision affects only next year's publication the three color cover for the probation number was drawn by lou brettner several last minute developments took place in the lehigh camp yes terda yafternoon it was definitely decided to revert to the huddle sys tem which austy had discarded last week and it was announced that elliott purvis and evers will not be available for tomorrow's game because of injuries elliott is still limping but is expected to report for practice monday while purvis is suffering from a concussion which he received in the gettys burg game and it will be a week or so at least before he will be in un iform again evers although his shoulder is rapidly improving will not be finishing with the reverse process of reception the step by step procedure was very in teresting to the large number of new men present many of whom were freshmen the station which has been es planning a big year men interested should get in touch with h g wiest field artillery was the subject of a talk by lt col clarence deems jr at the latest meeting of the scabbard and blade society held wednesday evening in the physics lecture room the speaker explained the many and varied functions that the present day artil lery is called upon to perform the lecture was illustrated throughout with numerous slides in order to be effective field ar tillery must cooperate with and re ceive the support of other branches of the service the infantry de pends to a great extent upon the ar tillery for protection but the ar tillery in turn often is dependent on other divisions for advice and information one important task of the artil lerymen is the spreading of pioson ous gases chlorine mustard and phosgene were the gases most gen erally used during the late war later developments i nclude the spreading of smoke screens by a specially constructed shell • contrary to the general belief the spreading of a barage is not the foremost task of the artillery but one of the minor tasks the bar age must be carefully planned so as not to prove more detrimental than helpful for this reason and because ti is extremely wasteful of amunition it is only used in a tight situation colonel deems is stationed at baltimore maryland and is the r o t c officer of the third corps area the colonel fran cis macleod willis c e 28 pre sented by mr and mrs harry p wilbur has been placed on the south wall of the chapel near the side entrance mr willis was drowned last june after saving a small boy from the same fate his career at lehigh was one of accomplishment both in athletics and scholarship the tablet is sim ilar to the class tablets that occu py the chapel walls good body-mechanics means knees and hips are straight without strain 9 weight chiefly upon balls of feet 10 arms hanging easily from shoulders stories of the days of 94 when class rushes were really class rushes and the feud between the sopho mores and freshman was a life and death proposition throw interest ing light on how the sophomores ruled the lower classmen then it seems that it was the custom for the sophomores to pull one final trick on the freshmen after all the big events of the year were over they did this by publishing and posting in very prominent places about the campus sarcastic notices showing their contempt of the class beneath them one particular poster has come into the writer's hands through the courtesy of bert h wilson a jun ior at that time who sent it to w r (?). okeson in hopes it would have some value as a curiosity in the years to come the makeup of the little bulletin is designed to catch the attention by the use of brilliant green class numerals fad freshmen were not always regarded with deference ed into the background the con tents of the poster are as follows warts and slobs of 98 inasmuch as your efforts to obey the laws and to observe the regula tions enacted for papers would turn them in at the staff room in the basement of christ mas-saucon hall the brown and white grid machine including twenty-two players and the coaching staff leaves tonight to invade the lair of the princeton tiger tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p m last season the tigers sent the lehigh gridmen down to defeat to the tune of 42-0 but judging from the improvement shown in the brown and white team and also by the fact that virginia was able to hold princeton to a scoreless tie last saturday the tigers may not be able to repeat the performance this year princeton has been selected as an overwhelming favorite to win tomorrow afternoon but once before a lehigh eleven went to nassau with the orange and black a heavy favorite and when the final whistle blew neither team had been able to score princeton defeated vermont by an overwhelming score but her complete reversal of form against virginia makes it hard to estimate the strength of the nassau eleven the line is powerful and the back field consisting of wittmer miles jones and norman present a smooth working combination ed wittmer star back of last year proved that he has not lost any of his ability as a back and against vermont he was the star of the game scoring 19 points in last saturday's game he was also out standing and several times succeed ed in making long gains during the past week a number of changes have been made in the princeton line-up as a result of the virginia game one of the most important is that the tiger eleven will return to the huddle system princeton coaches believe that the cavaliers were able to interpret the signals the tigers also lost much time in getting their own signals but should the huddle system prove effective against lehigh it will be used regularly the huddle sys tem was first developed by coach roper in 1924 at that time the tiger was much caricatured by car toon and became known as the talkative tiger lehigh line averages 194 the lehigh team as well as princeton has been shaken up rad ical changes effected by austy tate last monday became more than a mere experiment as the week prog ressed and it is almost certain that jack kirkpatrick will be on one of the wing positions instead of his usual place at right tackle while either tom brennan or jack le vitz will be the other end tubby miller and r haas have been as signed to the tackle berth andy lehr and ed twigger as guards and tommy ayre at the pivot posi tion this is the heaviest line that has had in many years and verages about 194 pounds the brown and white backfield s still problematic since it is not ertain whether cowboy elliott will be able to play because of the ljury he received in the gettys burg game art davidowitz has been groomed to take his place and in the scrimmages which the brown nd white eleven has been put hrough this week he showed him elf a capable field general ellis oiler showed up so well in wed nesday's scrimmage when he almost cored a touchdown against the arsity that he will probably fill he place left vacant by tubby mil er's shift to the line offense built up for the past week the brown and white coaches have been concen trating on building an offense which was so lacking in the gettysburg game on tuesday the varsity scrimmaged the frosh and scored at will against the yearling team while on wednesday the first and second string men indulged in an other long dose of scrimmage but this time the varsity scored only one lone touchdown the twenty-two men who leave tonight will stay at the somerset hotel in somerville until tomorrow noon when they will be joined by eleven more men the entire team will have lunch at the hotel and from there will proceed to prince ton the first set of men with the coaches leave about seven o'clock tonight
