horonary member of the mustard and cheese club as a token of ap preciation of his help and hard work in the direction of the play a murder a robbery a mys terious pistol shot two people hurt two blue idols two pen dants and a house full of liars this is a hell of a case such were the words of detective in spector hart in the mustard and cheese club's forty-fourth annual production the creak ing chair given at the south side high school auditorium friday and saturday nights the show had a very success ful two night run the house be ing well filled at both perfor mances this was the first play which the club has pro duced for some time musical comedies having beenyin vogue during the past few years the entire performance went off smoothly showing the results of the hard work which had been unusually fortunate in having a harpist of excellent ability who will be heard throughout the program the lehigh sym phony orchestra glee club quartet and dance orchestra will add some of their latest num bers to the program following the concert a dance will be held for the le high musicians and moravian girls music will be furnished by the musical club's dance or chestra comprising 13 pieces under the direction of david fluharty j t neath manager of the clubs is unable as yet to give definite information regarding the second concert tour in the vicinity of new york how ever concerts and dances have been arranged at bishopthorpe manor school for girls and cedar crest college for women the home concert and dance to be given in drown hall may 12 will be the grand finale of the clubs policy the number of major l's awarded at the close of a sea son will be dependent upon the victories scored by the team for example : two major l's for each game won and eleven ad ditional minor l's with the senior election of the epitome now completed and the remainder of the cuts and copy in the hands of the printer jhe actual printing and binding of the annual will soon be started although last minute hold-ups may develop the present sched ule tor the yearbook promises to have it completed and ready for distribution during the early part of may at a date earlier than any of its predecessors have appeared _ the epitome will contain sev eral novel sections this year which have not appeared in previous books including a pic torial summary of important events at lehigh during the past year very clever art work has been done in the open ing section and throughout the division pages giving a pleas ing and novel effect to the book the section relating to faculty and administration has been partially revised over last year's improved form and gives a more balanced page effect a variation has been secured in the opening pages of the sec tion on fraternities while the athletic section has also been somewhat revised six hundred copies of the book will be printed and distri buted this year and although not all of the books have been sold energetic competitors for the business staff are now can vassing all parts of the cam pus and college in order not to overlook anyone who has not as yet subscribed the books will be sold at the regular price of five dollars untii ready for dis tribution at which time the amount will be advanced to 6 three houses hold miami triad dance it may be of interest to those who saw the mustard and cheese show friday and sat urday night to know just what the creak was and how hard it was to develop the wheel chair was bought several weeks ago and every one thought that there would be no trouble at all to make it squeak such was not the case when the stage managers began work on it they found a difficult problem con fronting them rosin was put on the axle spokes were hit with hammers the steel was heated in an at tempt to bend it leather wash ers were put on and all to no avail the night of the dress rehearsal come and still there was no squeak a mechanical device was brought in but it failed to produce a natural sound something had to be done the creaking chair which did not creak was sent over to the physics department and the faculty started working on it they said that they would have a squeak developed by eleven o'clock friday morning at eleven o'clock there was still no creak and the faculty had to admit failure something had to be done but nobody knew what to do the night of the show came and there was a fine creak ev ery time the wheel went around those who knew of the difficul ty wondered what had happen ed they made inquiry only to discover that professor pfan der standing behind the curtain creaking with his voice on ev ery turn of the wheel had been the solution for the problem scabbard and blade elected nine juniors to membership plans were completed for an open meeting to be held friday evening at 7:30 p m march 30 and dates were set for an other open meeting in may and for a tea dance at a meeting held at the armory monday evening march 19 the nine juniors who were honored hy cellent orchestra sword and crescent holds tea dance dr haff to lecture at pre-med meeting captain maximilian clay in fantry who will shortly com plete his course of study in the infantry school at fort ben ning georgie has been detailed by the direction of president coolidge to the department of military science and tactics at lehigh university he relieves captain chance whose detail has expired and who has been directed to report to the infan try school at fort benning as an instructor the pettinos graphite mill on river street which obtains its power by water from the canal desiring to make an ex tension has asked the mechan ical engineering department to determine the maximum power available for their water wheel this project has been undertak en by the junior class in mech anical engineering as a practical cooperative laboratory exer cise the class has investigated the plant and specified a brake which the mill will build and install to measure the available horse power at various speeds of the water wheel the plant will be closed saturday morn ning march 81 at the end of the night shift the class will go down to the mill at 9 a m and conduct the test the plant will start operating again sat urday afternoon observations taken during the test will en able the calculation of the horse power obtainable at various speeds and the maximum power that can be obtained at a uni form speed dr haff noted northampton surgeon will give an illustrat ed lecture on his work at the pre-medical society meeting 8:15 p m thursday march 28 in williams hall dr haff was on the list of speakers of the society last year and gave one of the most interesting lectures that has been heard by the pre meds the sigma chis phi delts and betas combined on satur day evening in the ball room co providing an atomic hydrogen arc welder and the lincoln electric co making up several large truss specimens to be broken on the 800,000 lb compression machine in fritz laboratory the manufactur ers will have representatives here to demonstrate their own apparatus since the last symposium the general electric co has erect ed a building in philadelphia with all the structural steel welded and f t mckibben former head of the civil engin eering department here and en gineer in charge of this new welded building has consented to aid in the discussion wil liam spraragen of the ameri can welding society and other practical welders connected with railroad and navel repair shops together with makers of weld ing equipment and consulting engineers will be present to take part in the agenda the following men have been secured to speak on the effi cacy of welding in repairs at the welding symposium to be held here april 16 ; a f keogh president of the sound welding co j c reed of the bethle coveted rewards be made on the basis of the service a man renders to the team ? the feas ability of the new plan will be presented to the students through these columns according to the prospective policy the number of major l's awarded at the close of a sea son will be dependent upon the victories scored by the team for example : two major l's for each game won and eleven ad ditional minor l's will be given the members of the football team had this plan been in vogue during the 1927 schedule but two men would have been renumerated with major let ters with variations for the dif ferent sports the plan will be applicable to all as follows • varsity football — two major ls for each game won 11 ad ditional mirior ls varsity soccer — ene major l for each game won 12 addi tional minor ls varsity cross-country — five minor ls two major ls for win ning middle atlantics champion ship varsity basketball — one ma jor l for each three games won five additional minor ls varsity wrestling — one major l for individual intercollegiate champions and each dual meet won major ls not to exceed seven seven additional minor ls varsity baseball — two major ls for each three games won and nine additional minor ls varsity swimming — one maj or l for each dual meet won and for individual middle at lantic champions major ls not to xeceed seven and for break ing league records any number varsity lacrosse — three maj or ls for each two games won and 12 minor ls varsity tennis — one major l for each two games won maj or ls not to exceed six and six additional minor ls varsity track — one major l for each meet won and each in dividual middle atlantics cham pion major ls not to exceed seven except for broken records any number seven additional minor ls m s t to lose captain chance with the senior election of the epitome now completed and the remainder of the cuts and copy in the hands of the printer jhe actual printing and binding of the annual will soon be started although last minute hold-ups may develop the present sched ule tor the yearbook promises to have it completed and ready for distribution during the early part of may at a date earlier than any of its predecessors have appeared _ the epitome will contain sev eral novel sections this year which have not appeared in previous books including a pic torial summary of important events at lehigh during the past year very clever art work has been done in the open ing section and throughout the division pages giving a pleas ing and novel effect to the book the section relating to faculty and administration has been partially revised over last year's improved form and gives a more balanced page effect a variation has been secured in the opening pages of the sec tion on fraternities while the athletic section has also been somewhat revised six hundred copies of the book will be printed and distri buted this year and although not all of the books have been sold energetic competitors for the business staff are now can vassing all parts of the cam pus and college in order not to overlook anyone who has not as yet subscribed the books will be sold at the regular price of five dollars untii ready for dis tribution at which time the amount will be advanced to 6 three houses hold miami triad dance it may be of interest to those who saw the mustard and cheese show friday and sat urday night to know just what the creak was and how hard it was to develop the wheel chair was bought several weeks ago and every one thought that there would be no trouble at all to make it squeak such was not the case when the stage managers began work on it they found a difficult problem con fronting them rosin was put on the axle spokes were hit with hammers the steel was heated in an at tempt to bend it leather wash ers were put on and all to no avail the night of the dress rehearsal come and still there was no squeak a mechanical device was brought in but it failed to produce a natural sound something had to be done the creaking chair which did not creak was sent over to the physics department and the faculty started working on it they said that they would have a squeak developed by eleven o'clock friday morning at eleven o'clock there was still no creak and the faculty had to admit failure something had to be done but nobody knew what to do the night of the show came and there was a fine creak ev ery time the wheel went around those who knew of the difficul ty wondered what had happen ed they made inquiry only to discover that professor pfan der standing behind the curtain creaking with his voice on ev ery turn of the wheel had been the solution for the problem scabbard and blade elected nine juniors to membership plans were completed for an open meeting to be held friday evening at 7:30 p m march 30 and dates were set for an other open meeting in may and for a tea dance at a meeting held at the armory monday evening march 19 the nine juniors who were honored hy end of the meet ing a tentative date was set about the middle of may for the last open meeting of the year bill helmstaedter announced that the plans for a tea dance friday afternoon of spring house party were nearing com pletion this the first dance gi veir by scabbard and blade on the lehigh campus will open the merrymaking of spring house party and arrangements are being made to obtain an ex cellent orchestra sword and crescent holds tea dance dr haff to lecture at pre-med meeting captain maximilian clay in fantry who will shortly com plete his course of study in the infantry school at fort ben ning georgie has been detailed by the direction of president coolidge to the department of military science and tactics at lehigh university he relieves captain chance whose detail has expired and who has been directed to report to the infan try school at fort benning as an instructor the pettinos graphite mill on river street which obtains its power by water from the canal desiring to make an ex tension has asked the mechan ical engineering department to determine the maximum power available for their water wheel this project has been undertak en by the junior class in mech anical engineering as a practical cooperative laboratory exer cise the class has investigated the plant and specified a brake which the mill will build and install to measure the available horse power at various speeds of the water wheel the plant will be closed saturday morn ning march 81 at the end of the night shift the class will go down to the mill at 9 a m and conduct the test the plant will start operating again sat urday afternoon observations taken during the test will en able the calculation of the horse power obtainable at various speeds and the maximum power that can be obtained at a uni form speed dr haff noted northampton surgeon will give an illustrat ed lecture on his work at the pre-medical society meeting 8:15 p m thursday march 28 in williams hall dr haff was on the list of speakers of the society last year and gave one of the most interesting lectures that has been heard by the pre meds the sigma chis phi delts and betas combined on satur day evening in the ball room of the hotel bethlehem in giving a miami triad dance that has es tablished another precedent for lehigh's social program in particular evidence was the attractive collection of im ported girls who added a dis tinctive touch to the affair art zeller's merry-makers provided the musical touch in a way all their own the sword and crescent tea dance held in drown hall sat urday afternoon contributed much towards making the week end a social success the crowd which made up in quality what it lacked in quan tity consisted mostly of out-of town girls imported for the mi ami triad dance that evening the music was furnished by the lehigh six dr and mrs neil carothers and fred traf ford were present as chaperons other companies have loaned equipment to be used in the demonstration the ingersol rand co providing an atomic hydrogen arc welder and the lincoln electric co making up several large truss specimens to be broken on the 800,000 lb compression machine in fritz laboratory the manufactur ers will have representatives here to demonstrate their own apparatus since the last symposium the general electric co has erect ed a building in philadelphia with all the structural steel welded and f t mckibben former head of the civil engin eering department here and en gineer in charge of this new welded building has consented to aid in the discussion wil liam spraragen of the ameri can welding society and other practical welders connected with railroad and navel repair shops together with makers of weld ing equipment and consulting engineers will be present to take part in the agenda the following men have been secured to speak on the effi cacy of welding in repairs at the welding symposium to be held here april 16 ; a f keogh president of the sound welding co j c reed of the bethle hem steel co and j h weiss welding foreman with the new york central last year the use of welding in structural work was stressed whereas this year its use in re pair work a field that has grown tremendously in impor tance lately will be emphasiz ed also more time will be spent this year on the theory and mechanicism of welding while it is supposed to be chiefly a practical demonstra tion a
