question of loss of equip ment and the means by which it can be lessened mr petriken emphasized the enormous ex pense caused by this loss of equipment due to indifference on the part of those to whom the equipment had been issued different solutions of the problem were discussed to lessen the amount of disappear ing equipment the general con census of opinion was that the coaches and the managers should attempt to impress upon the students holding the equip ment the fact that they would be held directly responsible for anything that they could not account for at the end of the season of the sport in which they participated in the past there has been a more or less slipshod method of checkup on equipment austy tate citing the foot ball system as an example said that he believed the best solu tion of the problem lay in the building up of an espris de corps among the athletes the introduction of a competent ledger system for the equipment issued and an itemized sheet for each man out for the sport with all equipment that he has listed on that sheet billy sheridan wrestling coach supported these argu ments but added a point by say ing that the students should be forced to realize their responsi bilities more fully he claimed that it would be a very good idea to hold up all sweaters and letters in each sport until all equipment has been turned in or accounted for this system engineering at lehigh university the building has a very neat appear ance since all joints are weld ed and no rivets used mr jen sen stated that the advantages of welding over rivetting are the lack equipment was appointed by j g petriken at a meeting of coaches and managers of sport teams in drown hall at 7 o'clock on wednesday eve ning j g petriken graduate manager of athletics introduced the question of loss of equip ment and the means by which it can be lessened mr petriken emphasized the enormous ex pense caused by this loss of equipment due to indifference on the part of those to whom the equipment had been issued different solutions of the problem were discussed to lessen the amount of disappear ing equipment the general con census of opinion was that the coaches and the managers should attempt to impress upon the students holding the equip ment the fact that they would be held directly responsible for anything that they could not account for at the end of the season of the sport in which they participated in the past there has been a more or less slipshod method of checkup on equipment austy tate citing the foot ball system as an example said that he believed the best solu tion of the problem lay in the building up of an espris de corps among the athletes the introduction of a competent ledger system for the equipment issued and an itemized sheet for each man out for the sport with all equipment that he has listed on that sheet billy sheridan wrestling coach supported these argu ments but added a point by say ing that the students should be forced to realize their responsi bilities more fully he claimed that it would be a very good idea to hold up all sweaters and letters in each sport until all equipment has been turned in or accounted for this system was in use at^high several years ago severfl of the students pres ent voiced their opinions on the matter with most of them sup porting austy's plan it was decided the ledgers should be kept by either the managers in each sport themselves or by some person employed especial ly for the job to perfect a plan for the cor rect application of the system mr petriken appointed a com mittee consisting of series of talks given to the classes in highway engineering s a becker associate professor of civil engineering stated that this is mr mcclintock's third visit to lehigh and that his lec ture will chi alpha - cyril d jensen robert b morris instructors in civil en gineering evan h gardner robert b jewell senior civil engineers made a trip to phil adelphia last monday to inspect a large building construction in which welding is being used the building is an addition to the general electric com pany's west philadelphia plant the building contains 1000 tons of steel of which all trusses are being electric arc welded instead of being riveted the trusses are of 85 feet span the con sulting engineer on the design of the building is f rank p mc kibben formerly head of the department of civil engineering at lehigh university the building has a very neat appear ance since all joints are weld ed and no rivets used mr jen sen stated that the advantages of welding over rivetting are the lack of noise neatness greater efficiency and much greater strength r j fogg head of the de partment of civil engineering stated that arrangements have been made for the civil engin eering seniors to visit the build ing on their philadelphia inspec tion trip the sophomore class will give its third tea dance of the year 4 p m march 24 in drown hall it was decided at the weekly cabinet meeting wed nesday evening dave fluhar ty's orchestra will furnish the music the cabinet decided to hold a pep smoker about march 30 in anticipation of the com ing banquet season the sophomore committee which will meet with dean c m mcconn and a freshman committee to decide on a pro gram for the banquet season was instructed by the cabinet to observe traditions in regulat ing this year's banquet season the senior banquet will be held march 22 the juniors however do not wish to have their banquet so early in the season thereby making the probable date of the sophomore dinner about april 20th g ellis oiler sophomore president urged that sopho mores pay their dues so that plans for the banquet season can be completed the united states army de sires to interest members and graduates of r.o.t.c units in the opportunities offered at the various flying schools maintain ed by the army to prepare men for service as military pilots the air corps is ready to ap point suitable candidates as fly ing cadets for instruction in navigation meteorolgy radio and other subjects allied to military aviation following such preliminary instruction they are trained in the piloting of either heavier-than-air or lighter-than-air craft in eith er case the course of instruction lasts one year the first eight months of the heavier-than-air training i s given at brooks field san an tonio texas or at march field riverside california upon completion of the primary training students are transfer red to the advanced flying school at kelly field san an tonio texas for the remaining four months the primary training includes approximately 75 hours in the air the advanced training con sists of transition to service type airplanes cross-country flying and aerial gunnery in volving approximately 250 hours of actual flying further information about this corps may be obtained at the office of the professor of mili tary science and tactics a set of the royal historical commission reports probably the only
