1 30 in stadium new institute highly praised plant inspected by journalists prof mcdougall takes class in journalism thru globe-times plant lehigh institute of research publishes many works omicron delta kappa senior honorary society held a dinner meeting thursday night at the delta tau delta house after dinner edward mcgovern who was elected last spring but was unable to attend the regular in itiation was initiated the regular business meeting began with plans for a tap day to be held october 15th between the halves of the swarthmore game men desiring to make o d k should hand in their list of ac tivities immediately in a discussion on the need of college meetings it was agreed that besides aiding elec tions and athletics they are a great help in strengthening col lege spirit the four o'clock meetings have not been success ful so that other plans were suggested it was decided that o d k go on record as recom mending that the eleven o'clock class on thursday be dismissed fifteen minutes early in order to hold a pep meeting before the princeton game continued on page six during a discussion of the limitation of activities it was reported that men have been if the qualities of the 1929 epitome may be judged by the work already done upon it it is safe to say that it will be an even greater success than that of last year although the year is still very young both the editorial and business staffs are hard at work there has not yet been and probably will not be a definite statement made by any member of the board concerning the general make-up and appearance of the book but it has been rumored that there will be several material and im portant changes in this year's edition the senior class book com mittee has already been ap pointed and it is busy collecting all the available material for the senior section which will be completed before christmas a few of the seniors have al ready had their pictures taken and those who have not yet done so are urged to make ap pointments with any member of the board as soon as pos sible the northern engraving company of canton ohio who did the engraving for last year's book has signed a contract to do the work this year the pic tures are being taken by bill continued on page six senior bookmen commence early the annual founder's day sports between the lower classmen to see whether or not the dinks will be worn on sundays will take place in the stadium tomorrow at 1 30 p.m the frosh are very enthusias tic in their preparation for the sports with a spirit like that exhibited during the past games they are intensely anxious to clash with the sophs tomorrow in their second meeting of the year president savage asked for volunteers as chairmen of committees each of which are to deal with one activity on the eventful day the chairman is to collect his men and tell them what they are to do in their event the frosh are working energetically to gain the coveted victory they are determined to win a majority of the contests to secure the honor of discarding the frosh caps on sundays the sophs are also very ac tive in picking their teams president oiler called the class together in order to instruct them in regard to the events they are planning a campaign continued on page six tomorrow founder's day will be celebrated with a full and varied program the morn ing will be occupied with the formal exercises consisting of the graduation of a few of the class of 1927 who did not re ceive their diplomas in june the conferring of honorary de grees and an address by dr karl t compton professor of physics at princeton who will talk on the subject cooperation in scientific research the announcement of honors for the past academic year as well as the distribution of prizes to sophomores juniors and sen iors for their excellence of work in various subjects and courses will also be made dur ing these exercises in the afternoon the fresh men and sophomores will en gage in their annual contests consisting of five athletic ev ents the issue at stake is whether or not the frosh shall wear freshman caps on sun day in the evening there will be a meeting of the trustees at which time among other things the plans for the new packer laboratory will be sub mitted as is customary no classes will be held throughout the day giving the faculty and student body a full opportunity to honor asa packer by par ticipating in the various activi ties scheduled on the day set apart in his name the program for the formal exercises to be held in the morning continued on page six mr allais leads junior offering frosh initiated into lehigh life the servant in the house staged tonight in drown hall freshmen choose temporary leader class book committee urges early return of ballots and pictures bathrobe parade and shoe rush opens year in a hardly-contested game lehigh's football eleven fought its way to a 6-0 victory over a heavy ursinus team playing under a hot sun suitable for anything rather than a hard football game the brown and white overcame stiff opposition to humble the collegeville elev en flashing an attack in the last quarter that carried every thing before it the lehigh team in four successive plays march ed 37 yards to cross the goal line although the sun caused the players on both teams to tire early in the game the spir it and the potential strength of what proved to be a conditioned lehigh team came to the fore the backfield opening up a fur ious attack that found its mo mentum in a beautiful forward pass from davidowitz to tom my burke felt itself mementar ily halted but on its next op portunity made ursinus back off the field in the waning minutes of play after an exchange of punts lehigh lost the ball on downs on ursinus 25 yard line black punted for the visitors the kick rolling back to his own 38 yard line where it was touched down by a ursinus man then dav idowitz who featured the game with his hard plunging through tackle broke through cut back and was finally downed on ur sinus 15-yard line by moyer the last man between him and a touchdown eager for a tally with the stands yelling wildly for a touchdown the team scor ed a first down when simes gained 2 yards through the line on the next play van blarcom tore around right end to the 2 yard line then hitting center he went over for the touchdown davidowitz attempt for the point after touchdown went slightly wide of the goal posts throughout the battle the visitors failed to seriously threaten but played a good de fensive game both teams lined up as being quite another of lehigh's worthy organizations steps to the fore ground the lehigh institute of research it was organized in 1924 to encourage and further promote interest in scientific re search and scholarly achieve ment in every department ef learning represented in the uni versity the institute details its specific purpose as 1 the training of men for scientific re search 2 the publication of the results of investigation 3 the promotion of general re search 4 the conduct of co operative research 5 the car rying on of commercial tests and advisory service in the furtherance of these worthy principles the institute has received recommendation and recognition throughout the country mr howard seavoy leach university librarian in an interview states that the lehigh institute of research is a new comer on the campus being less than two years old at present but is already mak ing itself felt in the world of scholarship and is making the name of lehigh known in a way in which it has never been known before last sunday's herald tribune carried a three column review of a lehigh pub lication put out by professors smith and leach called the the shakespeare folios and forgeries of shakespeare's handwriting in the lucy pack er linderman library this study gives a detailed account of the six folios of shakespeare belonging to the library le high is one of the nine colleges in the united states to possess a first folio of shakespeare and was the second in point of time two other studies have just appeared namely mazzini and dante by professor brown and the center function and structure of psychology by professor hughes these three pamphlets form the studies in the humanity se ries there are six pamphlets dealing with chemistry and oth er branches of science which have been put out by the insti tute forming the group of sci entific studies interest is be continued on page six admission to this play will be one dollar mr charles allais who leads the cast of the servant in the house to be presented by hanes-allais inc at drown hall tonight under the auspices of the junior class has had a rich varied experience of roles the last two years mr allais parts have ranged all the way from the tragic intensity of a christian martyr in androcles and the lion to the broad com edy of t-bone with richard bennett in the barker among the most difficult parts he has been called upon to en act was that of the statue of love in a recent new york pro duction of prunella in this role he was required to stand immobile for more than one half hour before coming to life mr allais says that he finds the part of manson in the ser vant in the house more thor oughly to his liking than any of the things he has done it is a role which provides constant challenge and inspiration to the actor engaged in its interpreta tion the class in the new b a course journalism began to cultivate a nose for news last friday when it took a trip through south bethlehem's newspaper plant the globe times this instructive field trip for the budding journalists was made possible through the courtesy of the newspaper edi tor mr harold p farquhar who extended to mr mcdougall recently engaged journalistic professor at lehigh the invita tion to inspect the globe-times plant during make-up of two afternoon editions mr mcdougall formerly as sociated with the united press in chicago is introducing a very practical and interesting method for teaching the news game to his pupils here at le high he plans to set up a newspaper copy every friday afternoon with news gleaned by his reportorial staff of stu dents the class must trace down news stories listed on their assignment cards and bring them back to the make up office in saucon hall to be proof-read and finally printed this office made to resemble the editorial rooms of a big town daily will be modernly equipped with typewriters for each student the reporters may be required to prowl about the whole city of bethlehem in search for news each man of course handling his own beat in this way the class learns the thrills and hard knocks of news paper reporting the visit to the bethlehem globe-times included inspec tions and interviews in the news room editor's office and the mechanical department in the news room the class looked over the modern telegraphic instruments of the internation al news service as it spelled out messages from distant lands down in the mechanical department the linotype ma chines were being worked fe verishly in preparation for the early afternoon edition it was interesting to see how the lines of type were molded together into a sheet in the office of mr h p far quhar editor of the paper the the freshmen received their first taste of actual frosh life in the bathrobe parade and shoe rush held on saturday the parade formed on the campus and marched down through the center of south bethlehem be fore returning to the stadium the yearlings evidently enjoy ed the procedure singing and yelling along the entire route of the parade with bath-tow els tied securely over their heads and dinks the fresh men sat in their section of the stands during the first half of the ursinus game between the halves of the game however they collected in the center of the field for their annual shoe rush after piling all their shoes in the center of the field the class was divided into two sections — one section placed at either end of the gridiron at a given sig nal the two masses rushed for the center of the field — and also their shoes so great was the excitement in the rush that a large number of yearlings left the grounds without shoes or with pairs many sizes too large or small for them the snake dance of the freshmen was omitted at this period due to the lack of time between halves after the rush all the frosh returned to the stands to wit ness the remainder of the con test burr competitors all men who desire to com pete for the burr staff are requested to meet in the burr office at 7 30 wednesday eve ning those who have al ready started are requested to bring their material at this time the class of 1931 received its first taste of class organiza tion wednesday morning when it elected rufus savage as temporary president the meet ing was presided over by tom burke president of the arca dia five nominations were made savage butler fuller harris and stutz only one ballot was taken the totals of which were not made public savage graduated from as bury park high school in as bury park new jersey he was on the football squad four years and played first team end in his senior year he was president of his class and was an excellent scholar — standing in the first ten in his class on being elected to office his first duty was to call a meet ing of freshman representa tives from each living group this meeting held thursday in drown hall was for the pur pose of appointing a committee to make arrangements for the founder's day sport events plans for a freshman rally to be held monday were also dis cussed savage is a prominent mem ber of the freshman football squad and will probably be a regular on the team he is a good speaker and has a won derful personality the per manent elections of the class will take place after founder's day at which time savage will preside at a meeting of the sopho more cabinet last wednesday night methods of carrying out the traditions and customs of the college in regard to fresh men were discussed plans for founder's day were given add ed impetus by the appointment of a committee to arrange for the sports with bob lentz as chairman being assisted by norton wilde george vaughn and dexter bullard on thursday the freshmen began running on the campus because of this custom the col lege will have the pleasure of seeing a few hundred frosh rush madly across the campus trousers rolled up and caps held between teeth for a week or more in completing its regular business the cabinet elected reed laird and bob lincoln to fill the vacancies made when two former members left col lege notice juniors are asked to hand in lists of their activities to billmeyer buck or straub for consideration by the cy anide club junior honorary these lists must be turned in before thursday night seniors seniors are requested to make appointments for sen ior pictures through dick sickler at the phi sigma kap pa house phone 1953 before thursday evening all ap pointments should be made at once the senior class book com mittee wishes to announce that appointments for senior pic tures must be made before thursday evening these ap pointments are to be made thru dick sickler at the phi sigma kappa house it is also most necessary that the ballots be in on time the committee needs the cooperation of the entire senior class to make the class book a success the early ap pearance of the epitome is largely dependent upon getting the ballots and pictures in so each man can do his part in making the
