for s.a.t c members state outplayed through entire game by brown and white team delinquencies must be explained by written report to com pany commander total amount subscribed incom plete at this time the big smoker which always precedes the annual struggle with lafayette will be held on friday evening in taylor gymnasium judging from the spirit displayed at the other smokers this year the pep that will be worked up will compare very favorably with that of pre vious years the speakers scheduled for the evening will include dr drinker president of the university arch johnston 89 mayor of bethlehem and vioe presiident of bethlehem steel w r okeson secretary of alumni association prof h r reiter v j pazetti 15 all-american quarterback and probably the greatest football man that lehigh ever turned out and dick colby manager 1917 championship base ball team to supplement this excellent line of speakers thp yo cmi band and the wrestling bouts will afford entertainment the lafayette smoker is an opportunity for the present student body to meet some of the alumni who are back to see the game it will also be the last op portunity to brush up on the cheers and songs which will be used saturday an abundance of smokes will be furnished and it is hoped that the student body will turn out to help beat lafayette the smoker will start at 7 30 p.m academic work to assume normal course it was through no fault of its own that lehigh was beaten by perm state last saturday on tay lor field lehigh outplayed her opponents throughout the entire game and was continually on the offensive but the loss of her cap tain and failure to kick a goal on a touchdown cost her the victory perm state defended the east goal grimes kicked off to savaria who ran from the 10 to the 27-yard line on the next play linger in tercepted a pass by wysocki but perm state was off-side and lost on the play wysocki and savaria carried the ball for a first down when dowd lost nine yards and re gained them on a run around left end through an incomplete for ward wysocki was forced to kick out on the seevn-yard line perm state was pushed back and forced to kick to dowd who ran for twenty yards savaria gleason and wysocki together carried the knii +~ p ptrp q+ofnv mi vsma um where savaria plunged four yards through center for a touchdown in the first five minutes of play booth failed to kick the goal grimes made a beautiful kick off to wysocki who caught it in back of the goal and ran for twenty-one yards in a series of plays the ball was carried for two first downs but wysocki was tackled for a ten-yard loss the kick was blocked by henry four yards from lehigh s goal line and on the next play the ball was car ried over by killenger henry kick ing the goal grimes kicked to savaria on the twenty-yard line and the ball was carried eighten yards lehigh was held wysocki kicking to killenger perm state kicked to dowd who fumbled and then recovered but at a loss both teams kicked in suc cession but due to a fumble on the second down lehigh had eighteen to go wysocki tried two passes one was intercepted by mackenzie and the other was incomplete le high again tried to score by a field goal but the drop kick was blocked perm state made two first downs but failing completely to gain fur ther headway punted out on le high'si twenty-yard line wysocki punted and the team held their op ponents back of the forty-yard line and forced them to kick dowd re ceiving the ball and carrying it ten yards wysocki punted to kil lenger on the forty-yard line where lundenberg was thrown for a three-yard loss on the following play killenger passed to brown who when he received the ball had practically a clear field before him was spilled by wysocki it was in this play that lehigh s captain and star player broke his arm webb was submitted for wysocki the team held its own and perm state lost several yards on an attempted pass killenger kicked to webb but dowd fumbled and bod|y is called to the following official notice just received from the war department committee on education and special train ing through its regional office at philadelphia henry s drinker presid&nt in view of changed conditions instruction in the following sub jects may be discontinued either immediately or at the end of the current term decemjber twenty first : first military law and mjap making third map reading and navigation fourth moderni ordnance the time thus freed must be devoted to such academic work as each institution may pre scribe it is probable that no program of academic work will be prescribed after the end of the current term but that the colleges will then be free to lay out their own program except that nine hours per week will be reserved for a course in war issues or some modification of that course mil itary instruction will continue as at present p,rescribed being strictly confined to eleven hours or in certain cases six hours per week all military details 1 con flicting with academic exercises will be eliminated these changes in the curricula do not affect the between the war department and the institutions ' ' the eve of the great annual classic with lafayette is at hand it will be the most trying day of the season but keady's team is in pink of condition and the odds are five to one for lehigh we regret the loss of the queen of our chess men but in spite of this distressing feature we are still in the limelight lehigh s aggregation can be con sidered equal to that of last year maginnes herrington and johnson are gone^but in their stead have come men like dowd webb and savara who can equal any trio in the east lafayette's record is ont extraordiary this year but never theless the game should be a hard one the maroon and white had a few disastrous games but their line up has not been impaired to any de gree on the other hand our team has had a fairly successful season lehigh s season opened late then due to the epidemic the games with ursinus and pitt were cancelled the game with rutgers was the first real game of the season it came before lehig'h was in form but the team profited by its 1 mistakes the big brown team outplayed the state aggregation in every technical point of the game but the blocked punt gave the game to penn state booth spagna calvert shaner and hatten present a strong line goldman's tackling has been a feature of the season and he has been a reliable player at center saxman is in perfect condition and will hold his end at all costs the other end is still in doubt but most likely tomlinson will be chosen lor that position the back field is light but snappy savaria is still holding his half back position most likely dowd wil-1 be put at quarter webb will probably play fullback but the last pisition is still in doubt unfortunately captain wysoeki will be unable to play on account of the broken arm he received in the penn state game it is unfortunate that he will not be able of the team and pre dicts that saturday's game will be hard-fought and will furnish the usual thrills attending the lehigh lafayette contests when asked for a statement rela continued on fourth page _ a system of demerits for the violation of soldierly duties was started monday morning at re veille for men in the s a t c the list of delinquencies will be handed to the first sergeant of each company after retreat thru proper channels these reports will reach the officer of the day a compiled list of all delinquencies will be posted between 8 a m and 1 p m on the day following the report the names of the men who are reported will be read out at some formation the man will have twenty-four hours in which to hand in a report explaining his delinquency these repotrts will go to the company commander and must be in a prescribed form a list of the demerits and offences follows otne demerit raising hand in ranks at atten tivvn . turning head in ranks at atten tion blouse unbuttoned hat on how he almost won a wrestling match because bosey prevailed upon him to such an extent that he believed he was the better man his opponent was a perm state man and the bout took place at state college sunny then elaborately de scribed the athletic department of perm state and warned us against undue optimism the assembly was then enter tained by a wrestling bout between foxey wuerz and eddie loeser both l men of the 145 and 135-pound class both men dis played great prowess and a lack of training section b was repre sented in this branch of athletics by miller for the battery me chanics and higgins of the tele graphers this was a spirited match characterized by many new holds and a disregard of wrestling form mr okeson or as he is more familiarly known ' ' okie ' ' was the next speaker ' ' okie has so long been at the head of a system of lehigh propaganda that if you don't attend every game and yell with all your might you get a sneaky feeling as he looks you in the eye everyone was spellbound as he told of the organization and co-operation he found at many of the colleges and universities he had visited he expressed his appreci ation of our having abandoned our pessimistic views and attitude which so marked the beginning of this abnormal school year ' ' okie was of the opinion that on the face of the situation lehigh had little prospect of winning but that we had the big advantage of being on our home field and could give our team impetus enough to carry all before them oscar lewine 20 rendered several piano selections bosey reiter was then called upon to impress upon us the im portance of the other team — the fellows in the bleachers bosey said nothing new in es sence but he has that admirable quality of being able to draw on speeches without limit and still keeping his audience at attention after a thorough rehearsal of the inherent qualities of the spirit of the bayonet bosey prophesied that we would beat perm state continued on third page george flick captain of the foot ball team of 13 and varsity wrestler and mr frey y m c a secretary delivered short speeches after which captain van atta commandant of the lehigh s a t c gave a short adress deserib on wednesday evening novem ber 13 a meeting of the entire student body was held in taylor gym to help the y m c a cam paign for funds for war work mr frey introduced the speaker of the evening mr joseph kun the deputy from pennsylvania mr kun said in part college life should be pretty dull if it were impossibele to hold meetings of the student body such as this one men who work dili gently and incessantly need re laxation in the same way only much more urgently do our boys over there need diversion to rest the bodies and minds from the enormous strain of being in the front line trenches the war is only temporarily over though we all hope that it will not begin again however every man must be kept ready so if the terms are not complied with hostilities will be renewed even should this be the end a great number of our men will be in france a year or more so the y m c a war work must con tinue ; the amusements and diver sions for these men must be main tained they are thousands of miles from home and it takes weeks for mail to cross these men are still under strict disci pline and their morale and purity in body must be kept up to the highest standard the work of such organizations as the y m c a y w o a k of c salva tion army and the like must go on this is war work week and the y m c a is raising funds to keep up its good work in france this is not a sectarian proposition nor a religious question but a social and economical question that must be carried out the men at the front had no sectarian feeling and we must not for we are one hundred percent anxious and we are going to carry this thru lehigh is one of many colleges in this country but it is known for its pep and the way it takes a proposition every student here should do his share and subscribe fighting in the bleachers as on the field there will be an important meeting of the brown and white board on friday at 12:00 m in the brown and white room drown hall it is necessary that all board members attend this meeting after being closed to the student body for over five weeks drown hall was opened last fri day morning the privilege of again using the conveniences of drown hall was
