method of its preparation including the strength of lead ace tate solution used ; and the moist ure content when used 2 the gas : its humidity and the period and rate of flow 3 the appara tus : its form and size as deter mining the circulation of gas with respect to the paper with gas mix tures containing various known a mounts of hydrogen sulphide these several factors were studied one at a time and the following conclu sions reached an operator by giving consider ation to the desirable qualities which are pointed out can easily select the most suitable and conve nient kind of paper after a trial of a number of samples ; the conveni ence but generally not the accura cy of the test is affected by the choice there is little or no differ ence in the sensitiveness of the pa per prepared with lead acetate solu tion from 2 to 12 per cent in strength ; a 5 per cent solution is recommended treatment of the papers with ammonia or carbon di oxide does not materially change their sensitiveness it is recom mended that the test paper be dip ped in lead acetate solution blotted and used moist since such paper gives the most reliable results the large effect of the humidity of the gas upon the test results is shown ; but it is also noted that the use oi moist paper with short test periods not over 3 minutes gives results practically independent of the humidity of the gas it is im practicable either to dry or to satu rate the gas to a constant condition as to humidity because of the prob ability of simultaneous change in the hydrogen sulphide content the rate of gas flow is shown to have some effect but increases in rate produce less effect than pro portional increases in the time of test the general practice of mak ing tests at 5 cubic feet per hour is satisfactory maintenance of the rate within the limits 4.5 and 5.5 cubic feet per hour is sufficient the time of test is an important factor in determining its sensitivi ty the proper basis for selection of the length of test is treated in connection with the discussion of the quantitative and engineering significance of the tests the different forms of testing apparatus used may be classified in to three groups circulating im pinging and penetration these be ing distinguished by the manner in which the gas is brought into con tact with the paper the 5 forms of circulating apparatus tested were the simple hydrogen sul phide tester chosen for this work and designated in this paper as standard apparatus the referees apparatus ; the young's sulphur and ammonia test apparatus ; the small drying-tower form and a large woulff bottle only one very sim ple form of the impinging type was tested ; and a single penetration ap paratus devised in the bureau w r as used the variation in the tests with different forms of apparatus is largely due to the variation in in tensity of the gas currents and their continued on third page miss ethel waddell daughter of dr and mrs john alexander low waddell and lieutenant ethelbert tal'bot ex 15 were married in kansas city missouri on monday december the twenty-first nineteen fourteen lieutenant and mrs tal bot are at home at the marine bar racks navy yard norfolk vir ginia lieutenant talbot is a mem ber of the united states marine corps every maryland man in lehigh is requested to be present at 5 p m thursday january 21st in drown hall at a special meeting of the maryland club important business is to be transacted the nominated members will be voted upon and reports will be presented college action on certain plans will also be reported on a few men had the privilege on sunday afternoon of hearing an ex cellent address on the essentials of success for a college christian association by john r mott the general secretary of the world's christian student federation mr mott is one of the foremost college y m c a promoters of the world having for twenty-five years led student christian work in amer mr matt laid great stress on the attitude with which each member regards the teachings of the bible and the amount of study he puts the first essential to a truly suc cessful organization is that there should be difficulties as an ex ample the speaker cited a strong y m c a in japan with an enroll ment of two hundred but which be gan with only three men the al most insurmountable odds served to bring out all the latent powers of the three until to-day they have a large and successful association the sincerity and earnestness of each member were emphasized as essentials especially as necessities for procuring new members they must be made to believe by the sin cerity of the present members that to be a member of the christian as sociation is worth-while continued on fourth page the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday january 19 1915 physical statistics of the freshman class vol xxii lehigh defeats gettysburg government makes lead acetate tests on gas prof stewart addresses v.m.c.a report shows that many have defective vision soccer team loses game brown and white team defeats opponents by fast team work easton field club defeats the university team on wet field tests reveal presence of hydro gen sulphide in gas mixtures member of faculty points out opportunities open to students through the y m c a officers hear j r mott score 36 to 28 xo 28
