civil engineering department is cordially invited by the society and the department to attend the meet ing ladies will be admitted on membership cards held by the stu dents and instructors in attendance the committee in charge has ar ranged the following program for the evening 1 — election of officers 2 — exhibition laboratory tests 3 — refreshments the experiments which will be performed by several of the seniors and juniors of the course and fac ulty members are electrolysis of steel in concrete autographic ten sioni test of steel reinforced con crete beam illuminated sprinkling filter nozzles illuminated jet illu minated weir and illuminated pel ton wheel the nomi mat ions for the society offices for the year 1915-1916 are as follows : president — e j clement w b miller and s b scruggs secretary — p j ganey l m levin and r w sheckells treasurer — l b ryom and j h seipple stevens track meet the perm state track team prov ed to be too fast for the lehigh team on saturday when they won by a score of 78 to 34 the meet was held at state college on new beaver field this was the first meet held there this season and some exceptionally fast time was made the most thrilling race of the af ternoon was the mile run which was won by mcgrath closely fol lowed by burke garland of state taking third place at no time dur ing the race did more than five yards separate the runners the dashes were a surprise for lehigh dolbin of state doing the 100-yard in 9 4-5 seconds and post of state doing the 220 in 22 sec onds the perm state record was broken mi the 100-yard dash perm state taking all three places the third man doing the distance in 10 seconds the pole vault avas also hotly con tested good winning out finally at a height of 1 1 f-et md 3 inches at which height he cleared the bar by at least six inches the treatment accorded the le high team was well worthy of men tion . the team left here at six o'clock friday morning and arriv ed in state college about four o clock during the two-day stay they received the best of treatment due to the long trip the team re mained in state college saturday night and returned here sunday continued on fourth page meeting of the athletic committee lehigh defeated the indians in the annual lacrosse game last satur day on taylor field by a score of 3 to 0 this game was not of the kind that would render credit to the game of lacrosse for there was a decided note of roughness shown the first half ended without any man being put out of the game for any period of time and lehigh led 2to 0 during the second half the carlisle team left the field but soon returned to finish the game a mix-up followed shortly after play was resumed after which the game was called off by mutual consent the game started off rather loose ly both sides being off color in passing and team work after some ten minutes of playing lehigh scor ed her first tally later lehigh a gaiii got the jump and made the count 2 to 0 carlisle had several tries at lehigh's goal but each one was cleverly turned away by schulz jay raised lehigh's total to three during the second half and the brown and white continued to hold the upper hand until prevalent in armenia many years ago and which still exist armenia at one time was a thriving and populous coun try but now due to the successive invasions of the country shortly af ter the coming of christ the ar menians are a scattered race har assed on all sides by mohamedans they were the first nation that as a whole accepted the christian re ligion and they have suffered in proportion time and time again the attention of the civilized pow ers has been called to the systematic massacres of this people by the sur rounding turks and kurds and man 7 treaties w 7 ere formed in con sequences ; but in spite of all these so-called treaties nothing was done and the sultan went on with his policy which virtually was a policy o : f extermination there have been regular and sys temlatic massacres of this peace loa?ing people from year to year and the present war makes to be exact the 21st time that the armenians have been turned out of house and home by an incoming race ac cording to the newspaper accounts armenia is the present theatre of war in eastern europe and is the objective point of russia as it means eventually to her the con quering and subduing of asia mi nor there was one time in fact when a ray of hope appeared to the tor tured people — when the young turks came into control in 1908 these young turks had in reality the best of resolutions and inten tions toward this trampled race their government and constitution was to be based upon liberty equality and fraternity and it was all right as far as it went but lack of funds and experience pre vented it from going very far af terwards these young turks went back into the customs of their fa thers and perpetrated massacres ev en to a worse degree to-day practically the same thing is going on only once and a while do the civilized countries hear of these horrible conditions and then it is useless in traveling through the country now occupied by the armenians there is hardly a toavn that has not been razed to the ground to be rebuilt or hardly . an inch of territory that has not at one time been soaked in blood and in spite of all this the intervention of one of the six great powers of europe which would have only been the act of a christian toward a brother christian would have stopped these continual and perpet ual massacres of the armenians by the hordes of turks and kurd's ; mr h f lynch sums the whole situation up very neatly and con cisely in the statement that the only fault with the armenians is that they are christians next sunday may 16th the last regular meeting of the y
