thirty-five members of the foot ball squad who last fall played through the most successful season in lehigh's history sat down to a banquet recently in the eagle hotel bethlehem tendered them in ap preciation of their service and rec ord by the athletic committee of the university members of this committee as well as the coaches and the managers of the team were present making a total of sixty banqueters the family character of the affair with an entire absence of formality was emphasized in the opening speech by mr walters the registrar who was toastmaster mr walters reviewed briefly the events of the season giving the scores and the number of paid ad missions to the local games these exclusive of student and faculty at tendance totalled nearly 13,000 for the six contests played on lehigh field and emphatically attested to the interest and support of citizens of the bethlehems notes of regret at inability to at tend were read by the toastmaster from w a wilbur eugene g grace harvey p barnard and w frank roberts of the athletic com mittee resident coach tom kea dy walter r okeson of new york city assistant coach george matthews steward of the univer sity commons and andy flor ian a player on the squad who dictated a note of regret in a har risburg hospital in which he is ill with typhoid fever the first speaker of the evening was prof reiter who declared at continued on third page mustard and cheese dr hugh p baker dean of the new york state college of for estry at syracuse university de livered an illustrated lecture on for estry in the chapel on friday morn ing dr baker was graduated from the michigan agricultural college in 1901 in 1904 he received the degree of master of forestry from the yale forestry school and in 1910 the degree of doctor of econ omy from munich university ger many besides this he has many other degrees almost too numerous to mention and is a member of many forestry societies including several foreign ones all this coupled with his personal experi ence made him a very interesting talker in discussing the different phases of his subject dr baker compared the american forestry conditions with those of germany there with an area equal in size to pennsylva nia the market and labor conditions allow an intensive forestry practice besides germany has only 100 spe cies of trees as compared with the 500 here in america in this coun try the forest fires do the most damage while in germany they have practically no fires but an abund ance of the harmful blights and fungi also here the americans consume annually 500 board feet of lumber per capita while in germany only 60 board feet one of the rea sons for this enormous figure on america's part is that in cutting the timber only 40 per cent of it is uti lized 14 per cent is lost at the saw mill and in building 7 per cent is also wasted a forest fire which destroys only the standing timber does the least damage for such wood should al continued on fourth page lehigh took her third straight game of basket-ball last saturday evening when the albright college quintet was defeated on the home floor in a fast exciting contest by the score of 46 to 38 albright was out-classed by the brown and white men in passing shooting and guarding but put up a hard fight throughout the entire game especially in the latter half of play lehigh during the first half tallied seven more points than the visitors the score being 26 to 19 when twenty minutes had been played during the second half however albright took a brace and and played excellent ball keeping lehigh continually on the jump and scoring only one point less than the lehigh five who were credited with twenty points close guarding on the part of le high was a particular feature of the game as is shown by a comparison of the field goals shot by both teams lehigh getting 17 and albright 12 this may have been responsible for a part of the rough playing which was in evidence during the whole game and which is shown by the foul goals shot muthart caging 12 out of 17 and hartman 14 out of 21 lehigh not only out-played al bright in the defensive part of the game but also in passing and shoot ing where captain muthart and crichton were undoubtedly the par ticular stars the former securing 3 and the latter 11 goals a number of which were shot at difficult angles and from positions that were by
