an hour the varsity team gave a splendid exhibition of football both steady and spectacular time after time they scored on the scrubs until in stead of kicking off after a touch down they merely changed goals and again commenced hammering the scrubs down the field western flick mccaffrey and crichton tore great holes in the line and repeated ly gained fifteen to twenty yards through the scrubs while spectac ular runs for thirty and forty yards were frequent the hard-fighting scrubs were hammered and batter ed until in spite of frequent substi tutions they were so weakened that the scrimmage was discontinued it was a great sight to see the big brown team ploughing up the field and one which more than ever con vinced those on the side-lines that lehigh this year has a team which would be a match for the best teams in the east besides coach reiter strauss and black on the field were also farabaugh and costello of cornell helping to whip the team into shape for the strenuous a very able speaker robert campbell 13 made an excellent substitute the first paper was presented by henry j horn 13 on the subject of bituminous road construction and dust prevention it is a well known fact that the ordinary road disintegrates after some years of hard usage and becomes very ob jectionable on account of the dust thus produced it is the problem of the engineer to overcome this difficulty and produce roads which are practically dustless the road may be treated in different ways to prevent dust the process well known to us all and the most com mon is the watering of the road this can however be done only in large cities really for the watering facilities are not usually at hand in other places a second method is by the use of some deliquescent solution such as calcium chloride for example again as we all know roads are treated with oil mixed with an alkali the chief advantage of this system over that of the use of pure oil lies in the fact that the former process does not hinder traffic whereas the latter may held up traffic for some time in a great many cases oils with an asphaltic base are generally known to be the best for this use they are contrasted with oils hav ing a parafine base which make the road slimy and disagreeable the former kind of oil has been used extensively in california and the west to great advantage the use of oil also has the advantage over the use of water in the way of cost it has been estimated that the cost of applying oil to roads is about one-sixth that of continuous water ing the results being the same the different products used in road construction embrace many materials asphalt as found in bermuda and other places is used extensively as is also asphaltic oil tar also is very extensively used and the kinds of
