tuesday jan 8 e e society meeting in physical laboratory wednesday jan 9 c e society meeting in saucon hall water supply and sewerage night thursday jan 10 arts and science club meets in saucon hall physics and mathematics night new instructor in min ing department mr joseph daniels mass inst of technology 05 b s in min ing engineering has been appoint ed instructor in the department of mining engineering he was em ployed for a year after graduation by the dominion coal co at cape breton and has recently been with the new york new haven & hartford railroad on construction work mr daniels was highly recommended by prof richards of boston tech and prof jaggar of harvard glee club selections the following men have been ! selected for the glee club : ist tenors reel baker van vleck mark ley heine smith 2nd tenors howard taylor hartsuff serfass r swope hall ist basses gross finnic sheridan stevens mitman schealer 2nd basses b swope archer garrison woodward jacoby sayre these men will meet in christ mas hall wednesday january 9 at 2.15 p m as it will be impos sible to carry all of these men on any long distance trips sixteen will be selected from the above at a future time dr wingert goes to ohio university chemical society meet ing the lehigh-williamsport club held an informal dinner-smoker at the windsor cafe williamsport on friday december 28th the dinner was a decided success beck 03 acted as toastmaster and the following toasts were given : " lehigh men in wiliiamsport c f gilmore 06 " lehigh as we knew her mussina 04 " the lehigh williamsport club r j gilmore 07 " athletics ulman 07 " new men shank 09 " silence at home jaggard 09 " the freshman class waltz 10 " the family at lehigh l p gilmore 10 the following men were present beck 03 mussina 04 fisher 04 c f gilmore 06 mac minn 07 ulman 07 r j gilmore 07 reese ex-'o7 bates 09 jaggard 09 young 09 ginger 09 shank 09 graybill 10 faust 10 me clain lo mac donald 10 waltz 10 and l p gilmore 10 berks club meeting all who know him will be sorry to learn of dr h s wingert's de parture he has been very suc cessful this year as gymnasium director and has aroused an inter est in the work hitherto lacking dr wingert will occupy a similar position at ohio state university columbus o prof merriman will give a talk to the engineers club of central pennsylvania on the evening of tuesday january bth at a meet ing which will be held in harris burg the chemical society held a very well attended meeting on de cember 18 in saucon hall mr diefenderfer of the department of chemistry gave an entertaining talk on original research work in the determination of phosphor ous in phosphor-bronze discuss ing several methods used in the manufacture of that alloy other papers were read by a j guer ber 08 on the application of rare metals to illumination and by r c diver 09 on denatured alcohol and government regula tion concerning it there was considerable discussion of the pro blems brought out by these papers followed by refreshments h wilson harding emeritus professor of physics at lehigh university died at philadelphia on december 12 1906 for several years prof harding has resided near seattle wash but it was his custom to make an annual visit of two or three weeks in bethlehem while here in november he ap peared in good health and was warmly greeted by his many friends who were pained to learn of his unexpected illness and death the funeral was held at his native town washington pa friday dec 14 prof harding was graduated from washington college in 1854 with the degree of a 8 and later received the degree of a m from bethany college in 1872 he was appointed professor of physics and mechanics in lehigh university which chair he held until 1883 when he relinquished the charge of mechanics in that year he in stituted the first laboratory exer cises in physics given at lehigh the work being done on the top floor of packer hall in 1884 he organized a special one-year's course in advanced electricity which he conducted with marked success until 1888 when the regu lar four years course in electrical engineering was established under his direction the work of this course was at first done on the lower floor of packer hall but the increasing number of students de manded larger quarters and better equipment in 1891 he was ap pointed professor of physics and electrical engineering and the spacious building known as the physical laboratory projected and planned by him was completed and opened in 1893 in 1897 when retiring from active duty the faculty formally expressed their recognition of the valuable services rendered by him in developing the course in electrical engineering and in securing the erection of the physical laboratory as a teacher prof harding was faithful and painstaking as a lec turer he excelled in the exposition and in the illustration of physical principles by simple apparatus continued on second page ralph l talley 04 is ill of typhoid at philadelphia where he has been working for the curtis publishing co the berks lehigh club held its first annual banquet at the mineral springs hotel reading on friday december 28 many alumni for mer students and members were present with dr drinker as the guest of honor the committee in charge of the banquet was com posed of leaman 07 kinsey 07 callen 09 schealer 09 and wolfe 09 the washington and maryland clubs held meetings during vaca tion which took the nature of so cial affairs the latter organization having a box party at one of the leading theaters of baltimore calvin barvvis 06 was married to miss maybelle rhoad of beth lehem on monday december 31st vol xiv the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday january 4 1907 professor harding no 26
