friday should be very interesting since some very enthusiastic talks a movie good music and refreshments have been arranged for the pro gram the class of 1929 is the larg est class to enter lehigh and if it can only get together and show some real class spirit it should become very powerful the class meetings held thus far have not been very well attend ed and the men in charge have planned this start the lehigh soccer team found its stride in mid-season and made a very creditable showing by win ning four games tying one and losing five the schedule in cluded some of the strongest teams in the east such as perm state swarthmore and navy where soccer has always been their strong sport swarthmore won the league championship al though not with a clear record and lehigh finished third among the five eastern colleges in the league prospects for next year look very good as on ly three men will be lost to the squad by graduation these men are captain mercur ulmer and batz lehigh started off the season with the wanderers a non-col legiate club of national reputa tion and lost the opening match by a score of 4-2 perm state was next met and lehigh was again defeated by a score of 3-0 the perm state club has the wonderful record of having been defeated only once in six years and that defeat was at-the hands of the navy this year the brown and white likewise suf fered reverses in the princeton and swarthmore games during the disastrous start of the sea son it was in the second half of the swarthmore game the first league game that coach car penter radically shifted his team around and almost at once the play greatly improved the following week the soccer team journeyed to west point and easily registered their first vic tory over army haverford a league team and the easton club an independent team read ily fell victims to the revamped squad navy's wonderful team was the last to claim a victory over the brown and white the team which was responsible for breaking the excellent record of perm state won by a score of 2-0 the following week penn sylvania fell a victim to the speedy attack of the lehigh team and accounted for the sec ond league victory lehigh has the power to win at will over lafayette in soccer con on page 4 col 5 b&w competitions end with elections of ten new men two juniors and six fresh men make editorial board two sophomores chos en for bus staff keen competition in the curtain dropper for both teams carnegie tech de cisively defeated the brown and white eleven at forbes field pittsburgh last saturday after noon by the score of thirty-six to nothing the carnegie back field simply ran wild and the le high defense seemed unable to stop the speedy end runs and de ceptive plays of the tartans six touchdowns were the result of the offensive efforts of the home team none of the extra points being registered the thermometer was well be low the freezing point and a comparatively small crowd ot five thousand watched the strug gle during the game there were frequent flurries of snow and throughout the entire last quarter the snow fell steadily in spite of the cold weather there were few fumbles and be cause of the frozen condition of the turf the backs were able to hold their feet with ease carnegie did not lose any time in getting started and the open ing period was only a few min utes old when beede the tar tan leader slipped through right tackle after a fake triple pass and ran half the length of the field for a touchdown the le high players were unaware of who had the ball until beede was well on his way toward the goal line the play had every indication of going around left end the tartan capt slipped through the line practically un noticed except by the brown and white secondary defense men and there was but one of these between the runner and the goal and as the latter had picked up strong interference this man was taken out with ease the try for extra points from a placement by bastain fell short carnegie scored again in this quarter after an exchange of punts when bastain ran the ball back 37 yards after catch ing a punt from hess and car negie reeled off two first downs in rapid succession advancing the ball to the eight yard line three thrusts at the line failed to make any material gains but on the last attempt a lateral pass to donohue from beede did the trick not satisfied with these coun ters carnegie continued their relentless attack and scored again at the start of the second quarter after receiving the kick-off lehigh was forced to punt and carnegie completed a forty yard pass donohue to kristoff placing the oval on the ten yard line unable to get through the line beede skirted right end for ten yards and a touchdown crossing the line practically untouched the at tempt for the extra point again failed con on page 3 col 1 carnegie was held without score during the remainder of the period and lehigh gradual ly advanced into the opponents territory but to no avail there were several punts by both teams with lehigh having the edge near the close of the quarter lehigh advanced the ball to carnegie's 15-yard line the closest the brown and white with the overyhelming defeat administered in last saturday afternoon's post-season game by carnegie tech lehigh's big brown and white team brought to an end its unsuccessful sea son which in point of dishear ening misfortunes has never had a parallel in lehigh history however while the season was unsatisfactory the cause is not to be found in the team nor the coaches nor the student body no single condition can be designated as the cause of the defeats which marked lehigh's record in a year of such early promise it was a combination of circumstances in the first days of practice varsity mater ial was lost to the team because of injuries and before the nine games of the schedule had been played no less than six in juries of such seriousness as to render the victim useless to the varsity squal were sustained lehigh played her entire sched ule with a weakened team to how great a degree the death from injuries of char ley prior discouraged and dis heartened his teammates can not be said however it is ob served that men do not see those with whom they have lived and worked pass on without sending with the departed a bit of them selves and so it was with the members of lehigh's team when prior's injuries proved fatal they killed the thrill of the game shattered the morale of the team and made the sport grim unpleasant hard work in stead lehigh's record should be re viewed in two installments : a survey starting with the open ing of the season and going to the rutgers game would show quite a different situation than the summary from that game to the end of the season in brief the games played before prior's death resulted in three victories and a tie for lehigh while those played after his burial have been an unbroken chain of de feats when the call to football prac tice was issued last september all indications pointed toward a season of marked success le high had some of the best ma terial of recent years a coach whose ability ranked among the greatest and in whom both team and students had confidence ; and a student body which wa3 all for lehigh lehigh's right to hope for great things was justified in the light of the first four contests when gettysburg alone was able to cross the brown and white goal line until the fourth quarter of the gettysburg game the bat tlefied aggregation held lehigh in check but in the last fifteen minutes the brown and white registered eight first downs thus giving the thousands who thronged gettysburg's new sta dium a glimpse of the power fully aggressive team then the next week-end the biggest score of undergraduate memory was rolled-up against drexel only straight football was resorted to and again lehigh showed her strength con on page 3 col 4 the west virgina-wesleyan game was played the following saturday and gave lehigh her first threatening game the southerners came to taylor sta the recently instiuted berks county club lehigh chapter held a meeting in drown hall monday evening for the purpose of organizing itself into an ac tive society due to the poor at tendance which may be attrib uted to the fact that many of the students had forgotten about the notices posted previously to the holidays it was proposed to hold another meeting in drown hall on monday evening dec 7th at 7:30 it is the urgent wish of pres ident fiddler that every lehigh student residing in berks coun ty turn out on monday evening and support this club it needs a good start in order to foster its suggested ideas altho the organization is yet in its infan cy its members have planned to stage at least one dance and several smokers before the ter mination of the collegiate year of 25-26 these affairs will in all probability be given in read ing con on page 3 col 5 the club expects to stress the original intention which result ed in its formation it is their hope to put lehigh — its tradi tions and opportunities — before the men of berks county who will continue their education upon graduation from high or preparatory schools the dances the competition for positions on the editorial board of the brown and white resulted in the election of two juniors and six freshmen by the combined staffs at a special meeting held wednesday afternoon the competition was conducted on a point system and the men elect ed were the eight highest at the close of the contest twenty-five of the original fifty candidates remained in the competition until the finish the greatest interest was shown by con on page 4 col 1 after a lapse of ten years wrestling relations have been resumed between lehigh and lafayette during the coming season the maroon grapplers will make their first visit to taylor gym since actively re suming the mat sport the meet is one of the early ones on the lehigh schedule and promises to be one of the most attractive of the home affairs with the exception of the two heavy classes the lehigh coach has an excellent nucleus for his varsity the list of candidates is topped off by ralph best lehigh's only intercollegiate winner last year who will again compete in the 125-pound class in the lighter classes coach sheridan should have little oc casion to worry for the 115 pound class he has jimmy reed a bethlehem product who in wrestling his first varsity sea son last year came through in sensational style reed improv ed as the season progressed and came through the intercolle giates with the distinction of placing third in the 115-pound division reed's chief contend er for the job at the present time is another bethlehem ath lete he is eddie mcgovern who in wrestling his first season last year made an impressive showing with the frosh the 135 and 145-pound class practically involves the same trio of contenders they are dick lewis who wrestled most ly at 135 pounds last year and finished for second place in the intercollegiates if lewis has no trouble in making the weight and can do it without any weak ening effect he looks most pro mising for the lightweight div ision in that event poliska a wrestler with several seasons experience and heilman a pro duct of exeter and who had grappling experience at the lat ter place head the list of candi dates at this time for the 145 pound class con on page 4 col 5 hank williamson a vqter an who alternated between the 145 and 158-pound classes and the prospects for a success ful basketball season at lehigh this year look very promising indeed the lehigh quintet is being coached by buddy lin gle former lehigh star and twice captain who came here to succeed jim baldwin coach lingle is very fortunate in hav ing a veteran combination back this year four of last year's varsity are already practicing daily with a large squad of about forty men practice has started in earn est and not a day goes by that the squad does not have a stiff scrimmage captain weinstein f schaub smith and c shaub are the veterans from last year's five other promising candi dates who loom up as strong contenders for varsity berths are lister verlenden dixon roberts fulton and billmeyer berman and schwartzstein chuck hess captain of last year's quintet has not yet re ported for practice but should make his appearance any day hess has started at the forward position on the brown and white team for the last three years and his work will be of great aid to the combination this year bond substitute cen ter last season is also among the missing but is expected to report shortly the first game is scheduled for december 12 and in view of this fact the squad will be cut to three teams by the end of the week manager roberts has arrang ed a well balanced schedule but still has a few open dates he has negotiated with leading college teams of the east but their schedules are already full stevens seems to be the logical opponent for the date of march 3rd the 1925-26 schedule is as fol lows :—: — dec 12 — moravian dec 16 — princeton at princeton jan 9 — army at west point con on page 3 col 2 the local chapter of pi delta epsilon the honorary journalis tic fraternity will conduct a short story contest this year in stead of the usual essay contest the latter form of contest has been the custom for the past several years and has never been very successful so it was decided to try the short story this year the contest is open to all undregraduates of lehigh the subject of the story i-an be taken from any field but a story of collegiate life is preferred the only regulations that must b>e observed are that the story must contain local color a min imum of two thousand words and must be turned in before january 15 this long period in which to write the story is allowed with the special object of giving students the benefit of the christmas holidays in which to write it a prize of ten dollars will be awarded to the author of the best story and five dollars to the writer of the second best one con on page 3 col 5 the stories should be handed in at the brown and white room in drown hall or given to any member of the fraternity if there is no one in the brown and white room the story can be placed under the door and it will be delivered to the proper person the best story will be printed in the brown and white in serial form soon after the contest is ended but this should not discourage any men brown and white bethlehem pa friday december 4 1925 band performs well at game price five cents carnegie
