calendar farewell sermon sunday delivered by dr stewardson on last sunday morning the seat ing capacity of the packer memor ial chapel was taxed almost to its limit to hold all the admirers of dr stewardson students as well as residents of the bethlehems who had come to hear him deliver his farewell sermon the flowers which had been placed in the church through the kindness of some of his friends gave an added touch of beauty which was indeed most pleasing the sermon was very characteristic of dr stewardson just fitting in with the ideas which he has always believed in and gym exhibition the calisthenic drill given by a section of the freshman class proved a great success the men worked together uniformly exhibit ing precision and good form the next number was a new departure consisting of individual and combi nation exercises on the double hori ontal bars by another section of the freshman class the men did re those who attended the gymna sium exhibition last saturday even ing witnessed many events of a strictly novel character an interesting program given markably well and showed the re sult of steady and careful training the second part of the pro the text was taken from john xvi : 33 in the world ye shall have tribulation ; but be of good cheer : i have overcome the world preached so earnestly rev langdon c stewardson b a me began with work on the parallel bars followed by tumbling club swinging pyramid building and horizontal bar by the gymna sium team assisted by members of tuesday april 7 at 4 p m base ball practice wednesday april b at 12 m easter vacation begins base ball team leaves for south ern trip thursday april 9 — base ball game university of virginia vs lehigh at charlottesville va saturday april 11 — base ball game richmond college vs le high at richmond va monday april 13 — base bali game richmond college vs le high at richmond va tuesday april 14 — base ball game university of north caro lina vs lehigh at chapel hill n c wednesday april 15 — columbian university vs lehigh at wash ington d c thursday april 16 at 7.15 a m easter vacation ends notices mr j fred wolle organist of lehigh university will give an or gan recital on wednesday evening april 22nd in the packer memor ial church at 8 o'clock students tickets non-transferable may be obtained only of mr f r ash baugh at 50 cents each the next monthly meeting of the philadelphia-lehigh club will be held at the university club 1510 walnut street on thursday april 9th 1903 at 8.15 p m the subject for discussion will be our next shad dinner if you have any suggestions now is the time to tell them make it your duty to be at the meeting and en joy yourself moriz bernstein secretary campus note the base ball game with ursi nus scheduled for saturday was postponed on account of the flooded condition of the diamond alexander 04 was elected cap tain in place of j fi ferguson 03 resigned for cornell's lacrosse team harvard is having a series of in ter-class hockey games yale students are to collect the voices of all remaining indian tribes in a phonograph presum ably yale is planning a new yell christ did not promise joy and peace in this world to those who live for right and justice he had no worldly triumph for he was classed among the malefactors at the end of his life but there was something unsubdued in his nature on account of which in spite of his trials he could say be of good cheer i have overcome the world it was his personality exhibited in three ways the ideals of his mind the emotions of his heart and the performances of his will there is a never-ceasing struggle continued on second page the freshman class aside from the regular routine the gym tears introduced many tricks and combi nations on the parallel bars and in tumbling the pyramids were com posed principally of freshmen and received deserving applause after preliminary exhibition on the horizontal bar the promised wonder was introduced proving to be barley 05 with the aid of a few ropes and pulleys together with the assistance of dr davis he performed many difficult tricks making a fitting climax to the even ing's entertainment loving cup the students presented to dr stewardson by on friday morning of last week the students were present at one of the most beautiful one of the most impressive scenes that could ever come to a body of college men a college meeting was called to present dr stewardson with a lov ing cup as a token of the regard in which he is held by the student body president frick of the senior class in a few simple and well chos en words presented the cup and with it a full measure of love from each and every lehigh man to dr stewardson dr stewardson did not respond immediately but after a few mo ments he began by telling how when a boy he was often told and yet could not then understand that the fountain of tears lay very near to the fountain of joy he could not express then he said all that he knew would come to him later but his few pure straightforward words surely made those few moments such that all who were present shall always remember with a feeling of deepest gratitude after a good old lehigh yell for dr stewardson all joined in singing the alma mater sophomore banouet the sophomore banquet was held on saturday evening of last week at the wyandotte hotel at 9.30 those who had gathered sat down to an inviting table the menu included blue points consomme olives celery gherkins fillet de sole sweet bread patties roast chicken lobster salad mashed potatoes french peas ice cream assorted cakes fruits nuts coffee toasts toast master dean corsa our class hunt isert the ladies . . alan de schweinitz athletics billy brush the 12.10 car . a w zahnizer summer school . . george street lehigh without us george lundy the happy evening reflects not too much credit on the banquet com mittee oram berg and white who had looked to every detail in arranging an enjoyable programme the brown and white vol x no 47 south bethlehem pa monday af'ril 6 1903 lehigh university
