candidates are called out the first meeting of the candi dates for the base ball team was held in the gymnasium on wed nesday afternoon and captain par sons in a few words outlined the work to be done in the cage and gave the men some very good ad vice on the importance of keeping in strict training while the prelimi nary work is going on the new cage for battery work is in every respect far superior to the one that was used last year both in its lighting and heating facilities and in its size and when the team starts south at easter it is hoped that they will be in much better physical condition than in in preceeding years as yet a number 01 the r n who will try for the team have not been able to come out on account of their college work but at present owr thir.y experienced men have handed in their names and in a few weeks the others will also be out from last year's team these re main in college : parsons rodney sellers bohannon kelly aden bachman and lilley and with these as a nucleus we ought to develop an even more successful team than that of last year as among the new men person taylor mckeivey de schweinitz reese eisenhart and jones have all shown up very well in the fall practice and in the inter class games last year there was some dissatis faction among the undergraduates because of the small number of home games and so the manage ment has arranged this year's schedule so that a number of good games will be played on the home diamond and every one will be able to see what we can do against some of the strongest of the eastern col leges it is expected that the toronto league team will take their pre liminary practice on the lehigh field and if so our own team ought to derive much good from playing with them as they are doubtless faster than any of the college teams we will meet this year gymnasium team practice gymnasium team practice every day from now till the lafayette meet the lehigh chapter of theta delta chi fraternity held their second annual dance at the eagle hotel on friday evening the ball-room was tastefully decorated with brown and white and the fraternity colors and groman's or chestra furnished music for the oc casion about a hundred people were present including a number of out-of-town guests and the affair was one of the most pleasant ever given in the bethlehems among those present were mr and mrs johnston mr and mrs luckenbach prof and mrs stewart prof and mrs steward son prof and mrs franklin mrs brown mrs murphy mrs stull mrs pomeroy and mrs pierce ; pfahlar 3 mawhinney 2 klar 1 e morris 3 d miller 2 schmucker 1 m m % orris 1 goals on foul — pfahler 3 schmucker 2 referee — smith umpire — hausman timer — dow 20-minute halves their second dance department of history and economics monday 10.30 — politics consti tutional law tuesday 10.30 — politics consti tutional law wednesday 11.30 — history eng lish and american wednesday 2.30 — private law fundamental legal notions thursday 8.30 - economic his tory studies in the economic and political history of the southern confederacy thursday 10.30 — economics ele ments of economics and economic problems friday 8.30 — history english and american economic society every other tuesday at 7.15 p.m re examination in economics of first term junior will be held on saturday march 2nd at 3 p.m all candidates for track team will report for 5 o'clock drill until further notice the following examinations have been appointed by the faculty : february 20 at 2 p.m final in spherical trigonometry re examinations february 27 at 2 p.m — freshman latin march 1 at 11.30 a.m.—fresh man and sophomore english march 2 at 2 p.m — economies march 9 at 2 p.m physics and electricity march 13 at 2 p.m algebra and analytic geometry march 20 at 2 p.m chemical subjects march 23 at 2 p.m m.e sub jects march 11 at 2 p.m psychology yale cleared 22,000 during the foot ball season on saturday evening in the gym nasium the strong reading basket ball team was defeated by the freshman team by the score of 25 to 16 the reading team is com posed of good players and our vic tory over them shows the ability of the 1904 team our two preceed ing games were with practically local teams but this victory plainly proves that we are fully able to meet teams of established reputa tion a large and most enthusiastic audience was present and more in terest was manifested than at any previous game during the latter part of the game especially all were raised to a high pitch of excitement and ringing lehigh cheers followed one after another both the stu dents and townspeople were well represented and all were highly pleased with the contest indeed the interest shown at this game de cided without a doubt that basket ball has become one of the popular sports at lehigh financially also the game was a success only a small admission fee was charged but enough was realized to pay all expenses and also leave a small surplus the game next saturday evening with the lafayette freshmen should be even better attended than was the reading game the teams are evenly matched and a neat clean oontest is assured if it is well at tended the management will have some money in reserve and will be able to bring teams here from a distance and so have a successful season the reading players were much heavier than the freshmen who consequently were under a slight disadvantage they were speedier hower than the visitors and out played them on both offense and defense they were closely cov ered by their opponents but sue ceeded in throwing eleven field goals by clever dodging and team work all in all the freshmen showed up in fine form even better than in their previous games the first half was very fiercely contested neither side being able to gain any advantage and the half ended with the freshmen but one goal ahead of their opponents in this half 1904 threw 6 field goals
