university lecture george s morison civil engi neer of new york will give the next university lecture on satur day morning nov 19 at 9.30 his subject is masonry and will be illustrated by lantern slides there will be a regular meeting of the engineers club of phila delphia held on saturday nov 19 1898 at 8 o'clock p m football the practice since the lafayette game has not been satisfactory to either the coach or the players the varsity on several occasions being unable to have anything more than signal practice because of the lack of scrub men on the field the work of the team though has fallen off but slightly from the form displayed in the lafayette game several of the men are suffering from slight in juries received at annapolis and in wednesday's lineup the play was slow the offense being unable to make consistent gains when necessary on tuesday there was no line-up against the scrub there being barely a half dozen scrub men out and the varsity's work consisted in catching punts and perfecting a few plays wednesday the two teams lined up against each other for twenty minutes pla in which the varsity scored four times and the scrub once the scrub's right end was weak and homer made several long gains around it lindley 1902 played left half back in place of chamberlain and did well following his interference closely and handling the ball cleanly ross for the scrub was the only man able to gain any ground on the defensive the scrub was weak caused by the ab sence of several of the line men although they held the varsity for downs several times once with the ball on their three ard line there are but two more practice games before the thanksgiving day game with lafayette and if the team is to do justice to itself and to the college it must be pitted against a strong scrub each evening and that is impossible with the turn out of line men dur ing the past week wednesday's line up was as fol lows : vahsity positions scrub gearhart right end griffiths payne right tackle russell butler right guard enzian mccarthy centre bailey becerra left guard sanchez gledhill left tackle canfield scovil c left end buch james quarter back evans homer right half back — morgan lindley left half back ross dornin ■full back hawley the attention of students in the sophomore and freshmen classes is called to the fact that attendance at gymnasium exercises is required these exercises are now marked and graded as are other class exer cises and the term marks in gym nasium will be included in the reckoning of term standing w a kobinson secretary of faculty christian association the christian association meet ing for sunday nov 20 will be conducted as a missionary meeting the topic will be the life of mackay " an invitation to at tend is extended to all campus notes the thanksgiving day holidays extend from 12.30 o'clock wed nesday until 8.15 o'clock monday the faculty is considering a reso lution to make these days a per manent vacation but final action has not yet been taken the spanish-american society held a meeting last sunday pro fessor thayer will deliver a lecture before the society tonight nov 18 the regular meeting will be held on sunday nov 20 professor stewart's lecture professor stewart opened his lecture this week by stating the average american's opinion of his nation the average american considers the united states gov ernment as the wisest form of government in existence and thinks that it should and in time will extend to all the nations of the earth professor mac master's speech on territorial expansion was referred to and agreed with in so far as he said that the past policy of this country has been one of expansion however expan sion is growth and as too much growth leads to abnormal develop ment which always indicates disease so territorial expansion may be carried so far as to weaken and at length sap all the vital strength from the original country all expansion which the united states has so far made has been to contiguous territory which was strategetically,a necessity for in stance our first growth the ob taining control of the mississippi river was an absolute necessity to prevent the establishment of an in dependent republic bey^d +>^ all - 1 njes tat philippines are a group of about 1200 islands many of which have never acknowledged spain's sovereignty over them the in habitants of these islands are malays chinese and a mixture of the two a number of more southern islands which are mo hammedan have their own sultan acknowledging him as supreme these islands are many thousands of miles away and are in no way a necessity to us there are two problems which will face this country in the event of annexation of the philippines the first is the subjugation of the entire group and the second their government the first would re quire both money and men and we can see now how much the american volunteer is opposed to police duty it is an apparent fact that no volunteer army could be raised to be posted in the philippines and conscription would never be submitted to in this country the question may be asked : how do other countries raise their armies well the countries which do resort to con scription do not send their troops to far distant parts of the earth and while england's army service is voluntary their standard has been gradually lowered until now the army consists chiefly of the off scourings of the large cities the question of government is if anything more serious all territory hitherto annexed has had a small population which had a predominace of whites nearly akin to our own people to these whites in every case the privileges and immunities of united states citizens has been granted now action of athletic committee the following motion was passed at a meeting of the athletic com mittee held tuesday evening nov 15 : the university athletic com mittee hereby announces that if no valid election for lacrosse manager is held by the undergraduate body before the christmas recess there will be no university lacrosse team in the spring a valid election is one in which at least fifty per cent of the under graduate students take part the new gymnasium at colum bia is now ready for use it is the largest in the country having 22 000 square feet of ground space lehigh university south bethlehem pa fkiday noyembee 18 1898 vol vi no 15 the brown and white calendar saturday nov 19 — college lec ture in physical laboratory at 9.30 a m j football lehigh vs mary land athletic club at balti more sunday nov 20 — meeting of the y m c a in christmas hall at 6.15 p m wednesday nov 23 — thanks giving holidays begin at 12.30 examination in dynamos at 9.30 a m in physical labora tory thursday nov 24 football lehigh vs lafayette at easton monday nov 28 — thanksgiving holidays end at 8.15 o'clock in the islands under consideration there is a vast majority of blacks indeed the only white population is in the cities and is there for trading purposes simply if these islands were now admitted to the union as territories with the understanding that they were never to be admitted as states how could we know but that at some future time some political party would not admit them as states in order to gain power in the electoral college this was done in the annexation of texas which was to have been divided up into four states and most of the rocky mountain states were admitted for the same reason the speaker advanced two methods by which the philippine problem might be satisfactorily solved first the united states great britain and japan might unite to keep peace and order in the islands appointing a joint com mission for the purpose this plan is being followed by the united states germany and france in the samoa islands and is accompanied by very good results second we might trade the philip pines to great britain for the o,:ritory lying between our north ern boundary and the lawrence river or some other territory nearer home and this we have a perfect right to do professor stewart closed his lec ture with an account of the fall of eome caused by the competition of the cheap food brought from the tar outlying provinces with the dearer food raised at home the italian farmers were thrown out of employment and drifted to eome where they became a rabble and sold their votes to the . highest bidder an analagous movement may be seen in england at present not six months ago the manufac turers of manchester appealed to parliament to place a duty on the cotton goods produced in india this surely pressages a shifting in the scene of the industry which has given england a great part of her manufacturing supremacy notices supply bureau the management of the supply bureau desires its debtors to ap preciate the fact that all bills should be paid not later than the last of the month in which they were contracted the bureau has heavy bills to meet and must have the cash h a wilcox minstrel show chorus there will be rehearsals on monday and thursday of each week at the sigma phi house at 7 p m freshmen will provide them selves with wells new plane and spherical trigonometry and logarithm tables either by hussey or gauss hussey'stables t printed in english are recom mended c l thornburg
