e m trip to wilkes barre a party of seven students in company with instructor barrell went to wilkes-barre,on saturday on a mining trip at the com pany's offices they were shown maps of the mines and the gravity system of haulage was explained to them the first shaft visited was at maxwell colliery shaft no 20 this shaft is 1060 feet deep the cars are run from the top of the shaft to the breaker by gravity after unloading gravity again as serts its power taking the cars to the foot of the plane and up an in cline about twelve feet which give enough grade to carry the cars back to the shaft power for the plant is supplied by two nests of tubular boilers of 250 horse-power each and one nest of 225 horse power after visiting other shafts the party returned to south beth lehem after a profitable trip ♦ the current issue of outirig con tains an article by walter camp entitled " football review of 1895 together with pictures of the princeton yale harvard uni versity of pennsylvania and cor nell teams meeting of the ath letic committee the athletic committee met at the northampton club on monday night professor robinson was ap pointed temporary chairman and mr a johnston temporary secre tary the first business of the evening was the election of perma nent officers and sub-committees which are as follows : president yates 97 treasurer mr g b linderman ; secretary boyt 97 executive committee messrs rob inson johnston wilbur yates and homer 98 ; committee on grounds professor williams mr johnston yates 97 : committee on sports mr r h wilbur yates 97 boyt 97 homer 98 ilornor 99 and white 1900 the subject of athletic subscriptions was dis cussed the alumni having agreed to duplicate any sum raised by the undergraduates for the renovation of the athletic grounds the rules governing contests between lafay ette and lehigh were also dis cussed after reports from mana ger saltzman of the football team and manager white of the base ball team the meeting adjourned senior a c trip the senior chemists under mr spanutius made a trip to new york on saturday the first place of interest visited was the works of dr e r squibbs & sons the party was shown through the labo ratories and the manufacture of various salts used in pharmacy chloroform ether ammonia ex tracts and acetic acid were thor oughly explained the brooklyn board of health bacteriological laboratory was next visited at this laboratory the brooklyn water supply is regularly examined and diphtheria anti toxine is made the visitors were shown through this laboratory by mr randolph 93 all were very much pleased with the kind treat ment received at both places vis ited yale's new athletic trainer the athletic management of yale university has engaged keene fitzpatriek late trainer for the university of michigan to fill the place left vacant by trainer mike murphy fitzpatrick is not a new man in new haven,hav ing occupied the same position for yale in 1891 and 1892 before murphy was engaged since then he has had charge of the team of the michigan athletic club of de troit and of the university of michigan fitzpatrick will train the mott haven team and look after the physical condition of the football eleven communications to the editors of the bkown and white among other commendable things which the class of 96 did it started the custom of publishing a class book at the time the sub ject was considered by the class there was much discussion on the feasibility of the project and also on its value as to the worth of the book it is very evident to all who have seen it that it is a treas ure which will ever grow dearer in days to come it will bring back many fond recollections of the happy days spent under our alma mater and excepting the kpitome will be the only record which we will have of our college life it now lies wholly with 97 as to whether this example shall be made a custom or not it is a matter which if carried out will mean a great deal of work to those who have it in charge but is it not worth the effort many times over the least which 97 can do in this matter will be to call a class meet ing appoint a committee to investi gate the advisability of getting up a class book and then carefully consider all sides of the question as previously remarked the publi cation of such a book wjmld v::l-:o considerable time and labor and it is therefore imperative that the desire of the class in this matter be ascertained as soon as possible 97 to the editors of the brown and white : as election day approaches many of the men at the university ex press their regret at being unable to cast their ballot pro or con in the great issues that confront our country just at present not hav ing resided in this precinct the re quired sixty days to vote on age as a large number would do or not being registered voters of the beth lehems they would be required to go to their respective homes to vote a journey which many would i glad to undertake were it not possible owing to important reci ious which would be missed sreby undoubtedly many in uctors are in the same predica int would it not be but show l the patriotism that is expected all true american institutions if 3 authorities should grant the students a holiday on nov 8 and thus permit them to take an active interest in the decision of questions which not only affect junior class meet ing at 12.80 p m saturday oct 24 — football lehigh vs brown at providence lacrosse practice 10.80 a m sunday oct 18 l u c a meeting christmas hall 6.15 p m monday oct 26 senior elections christmas hall 10.30 a m to 1 p m football practice the practice last night was char acterized by hard snappy play the scrub was the strongest that has been out for some time and the men seem to be taking more inter est in the football team which is gratifying to all although the varsity scored three touchdowns the scrub did splendid work at times the backs plunged through the varsity line time and again and often made good gains james 98 did exceedingly good work as did chamberlain 1900 the scrub line was much heavier than usual and held well all of the varsity men are steadily improving and playing a team game the inter ference is good and the tackling is low and hard behind the line white and van duyne are doing good work while gunsolus can be credited with a gain every time he takes the ball gass at quarter handles the ball in good style and his play is entirely free from fum bles when the team lines up against brown on saturday every one may rest assured that lehigh will make a strong showing of the class business there is a very important subject to be discussed and acted on ; one that concerns the college we are going to get up a subscription fund for repairing the athletic field and this fund is to be raised by the classes individ ually and we wish to show all the enthusiasm we have in this im portant subject the athletic rep resentatives will endeavor to ex plain this matter as plainly as possible and will be glad of any suggestions that may help this cause we must make this a success and we will let every one come out of curiosity if nothing else canuck . to the editors of the brown and white : some time ago an article ap peared in the brown and white suggesting a course in the spanish language at lehigh that the idea was favorably received is shown by the fact that a number of men have expressed a desire to take up such a course in addition to their present work they recognize the value of that language to their work as technical men they recognize too the value of the presence of men speaking that lan guage many of these are gradu ates of schools of high standing and know the language in all its beauty and purity when these men are willing to do all in their power to establish that course and make it successful nothing seems wanting which could make it more necessary or more opportune dix 98 notices there will be lacrosse practice on saturday morning at 10.80 o'clock it is requested that as many men turn out as possible especially men who are desirous of learning the game so that there may be two teams on the field captain acting upon the numerous sug gestions that have been made the brown and white requests all students who are interested in the formation of a lehigh university sound money league to attend a meeting hereby called for that pur pose to be held at 12.80 o'clock friday oct 28 m christmas hall there will be an important meet ing of the junior class in the me chanical recitation room at 12.30 o'clock on friday oct 23 and a large attendance is desired
