on wednesday evening the m e section of the engineering so ciety met in the physical laboratory the paper of the evening was read by lee 97 on " bicycle brakes this subject of efficient brakes is one of great interest and on which much is being done three varieties of brakes were de scribed all of which operate on the crank shaft and are operated by back peddling the difficulty en countered in the first two kinds was that they caused pressure on the ball bearings in the third kind this was obviated the brake consisted of several concentric rings the inner one split and con taining two lugs these lugs are pressed upon by lugs of the shaft and when back peddled there is a tendency for the lugs on the ring to rise on the shaft thus expanding and causing friction the next meeting of the section will be held in two weeks the sub ject of the paper to be announced later the smoker the smoker will be held in the gymnasium on saturday february 20 at 8 p m the number of entries already received will make the event an interesting one and more entries are yet expected the price of admission 15 cents is such that every man in college can afford to attend each bout in boxing and wrestling will be well contested and a very enjoyable evening is in store for all who are present now is the time to show that the spirit that used to exist years ago still exists it is the duty of every undergraduate — and every resident alumnus for the matter of that — to turn out and show the spirit that used to exist at this institution and thereby re fute the statements of some of oar old alumni in regard to the spirit existing at lehigh at the present time the committee on sports hopes for a crowded house so come every one ! .*, ,—, — e r hornor was elected chair man of the sophomore calculus cremation committee at a meeting held on monday mustard and cheese on the mustard and cheese bulletin board in packer hall is posted a call for candidates for parts in the cast and chorus of the play to be given by that association early in spring probably the first saturday after easter a box for the competitors has been placed below the bulletin board those who have any talent in this line or liking for it should write their names on a slip of paper and drop it in this box at their earliest possible convenience the fact that a man has never be fore taken part in anything of this kind and does not know his worth should not deter him in the least from trying the cast will be quite large and many of the charac ters are very easy and require no previous knowledge whatsoever of the stage the date of the trials has not yet been fully decided upon but they will in all probability take place the latter part of this week or the first of next the positions will be awarded solely on merit regardless of whether one is a member of the association or not it is hoped that these facts will have consider able weight with those who are desirous of taking part and that a great many term tornado was clearly defined while the distinction between tor nadoes and cyclones was so ex plained as to prevent any confusion of the two words from statistics kept for a num ber of years in the several states it was shown that tornadoes occur most frequently in the mississippi basin the following conditions were laid down as necessary for the for mation of a tornado there must have been a protracted period of abnormally warm weather relative humidity must be high it must be a hot clear day over a large sec tion and an absence of great sur face winds a further treatise of the subject discussed the formation and relative motions of the tornado the tornado at st louis fur nished examples of their destruc tive effects it has been estimated that the wind pressure necessary for stability in a number of cases in st louis was from 85 to 80 pounds per square foot in designing a building 80 pounds per square foot should be allowed for the bottom 50 pounds for the top and proper bracing should be provided for carrying this pressure to the bottom of the building past history shows the possibility of the occurrence of a tornado of sufficient power to destroy any structure but
