ayres d wl wilson jr h h beck j l ras kin a section of one of the boilers in the boiler house cracked and is being repaired by the harrison boiler works junior contest first prize 25 h n herr ; sec ond prize 15 h a ried third prize 10 f a daboll george washington's birthday was celebrated in the usual manner in the chapel on friday morning and the orators from ninety-six fully upheld the honor of their class there was more than the cus tomary number of college men present while the friends of the university comfortably filled the main body of the chapel the exercises began at 11 o'clock with a selection by the choir after which the chaplain dr caskey offered prayer the audience joined in the " national hymn and then the first oration was delivered by l b davenport the subject was " peter the hermit whom he fol lowed in his pilgrimage through europe arousing peasant and prince in the scene at the court of urban ii and the consummation of his labors later in the holy land the secret of peter's power was in himself this was a victory o^er the minds of men what modern peter will sound the trumpet call to a crusade against such evils as exist today oliver wendell holmes was the theme of the next oration by j w thurston he showed that we owe to new england our chief men of letters and among them dr holmes shines prominently as poet novelist and philosopher he went briefly over his life and then described his works quoting an eloquent passage from " old iron sides in conclusion the splendid qualities of the man were pointed out all his readers feel person ally acquainted with the author after the singing of the " union song h a ried was introduced his theme also was " peter the hermit pie narrated how peter's heart was inflamed by the barbari ties which he saw inflicted upon the christians in palestine how he fired all europe to adopt the red cross and led them on by his zealous passion until the goal of his desires was secured and declared that peter's started for the purpose of selecting a team to represent lehigh in pro posed chess competitions with la fayette and local chess clubs this tournament will be open t all students but each competitor must be present to start on either wednesday evening or the follow ing saturday evening on wednesday evening there will also be a meeting of the chesss club to elect a secretary and treas urer and to receive names of me desiring to join the club there are no dues sophomore and freshmen chess players are urged to come out all who have men and boards are requested to bring them exec com there will be an important meeting of the southern club in christmas hall this monday even ing at 7 o'clock there will be a meeting of thl junior class tuesday feb 26 ins dr coppevs lecture room imme diately after the lecture on eng lish literature junior class meeting a special meeting of the junior class was held in saucon hall last thursday at 12:30 vice president taylor presiding the purpose of the meeting was to hear reports from the junior german committee and from the class supper com mittee in regard to the form.er 11 . w baldwin reported that the affair was not a success financially and that the committee was so far in debt that it would be necessary to ask the class to assist them after considerable discussion it was moved that the class assume the remainder of the debt but this motion was lost as was also an other to the effect that the debt be liquidated by private subscrip tion it was finally decided to let the matter go over until next tues day when the treasurer will make a report of the financial condition of the class and more definite action can be laken the class supper committee reported that arrange ments were in progress for holding the banquet at the sun
