seniors expect new gift record famed geneticist to lecture christmas vespers — the lehigh university glee club and brass ensembles sunday afternoon in packer memorial church during the annual presentation of vespers service featuring traditional christ mas carols and hymns the glee club was under the direction of prof robert cutler the brass en sembles jonathan elkus next b&w issue jan 9 the next regular issue of the brown and white will be pub lished on jan 9 1961 this will be the final issue of the current semester and all notices and ad vertising copy must be submitted to the b&w offices before jan 6 the staff of the brown and white extends its wishes for a happy holiday to all vesper music distant in time says reviewer by dr douglas d feaver associate professor of classics puer natus in bethlehem a boy is born in bethlehem a strange coincidence was literally true for this reviewer for less than two hours before the christ mas vespers he was presented with a new son born in bethle hem this being so it was obvious that any review aiming at dispas sionate judgment and keen objec tive analysis is completely beyond my powers yet because of this vivid intensification of the exper see music page 3 an internationally noted genet icist dr ernst w caspari profes sor and chairman of the depart ment of biology at the university of rochester will be the featured cooperative lecture series speak er jan 8 in the osbourne room dr caspari will speak on the conceptual basis of the biological sciences a native of ge many dr cas pari attended the university of frieburg and received his ph.d in zoology at the university of gottingen in 1933 among the grants which dr caspari has received are those from the national science foun dation for his work in genetic control of changes in permeability carl streed engineer with so ccny-mobil will speak tonight at 8 p.m in room 409 of the univer sity center on christianity in my occupation at the monthly meeting of the lehigh christian fellowship engineer to speak at 8 yule spirit triumphs living groups sponsor parties for area needy although the final tabulations are not in yet said james mor gan president of the senior class we expect a total contribution of well over 350,000 in the class gift campaign if morgan's expectation proves true the senior class will break all records in the history of the campaign the previous record was set in 1961 when 415 seniors pledged more than 140,000 at our last dinner on friday we knew we had a successful cam paign even though the final figures won't be in until wednesday of irate frosh see students page 7 christmas spirit ran high this week as many of the fraternities and upper-class residence halls sponsored christmas parties for crippled and underprivileged children in the allentown-bethlehem area cooperating with the bethlehem chamber of commerce alpha sigma phi held a party friday night for ten children from needy fami lies the party was complete with tree toys carols and dinner sigma phi epsilon entertained twelve children between the ages of 9 and 12 last night the children selected by the salvation army en joyed a dinner and many gifts pi kappa alpha played host to 14 children from the wilding home last friday night with a dinner gifts and a santa claus many of the brothers dates assisted in the care of the youngsters children from 10 needy families selected by the salvation army were presented with a party by the men of theta chi crippled children of the good shepherd home in allentown were visited by 10 brothers of tau delta phi the caspari has held academic positions at the following institu tions the universities of gottingen and istanbul lafayette college wesleyan university carnegie in stitution and the university of rochester dr caspari is an active member of genetics society of america treasurer 1951-53 american so ciety of naturalists vice-presi dent 1961 american association for the advancement of science for riboflavin in the moth ephes tia variability in enzyme ac tivity in inbred mouse strains and the behavior of the cyto plasm in populations from the national institutes of health dr caspari has had more than 75 articles and reviews published in this country and germany and much of his recent work has per tained to the above grants his articles have appeared in evolution nature auk genetics the proceedings of the national academy of sci the 16th arcadia will conduct the election of officers for the com ing year this afternoon the election date was set at the first meeting of the body held last week where it was also decided to meet yesterday to do some prelim inary work although the new arcadia will not take office until january 31st it is customary for the arcadia-elect to select officers early so the rou tine work of appointments can be done in advance of this date last year the 15th arcadia had elections immediately preceeding finals thus making any advance work impossible before the first meet ing of the organization michael moran president of the 15th arcadia suggested to the new group that they elect early so as to dispense with the preliminary work as early as possible in the present system of elections nominations for office can be made by the candidate himself or by another member of the organ ization those nominated then leave the meeting for the voting since there are no advance nom niations aspirants do not declare their candidacy until the meeting the new arcadia is composed of six juniors and nine sophomores the juniors are jerry moreno jerome subkow duncan payne r steven schiavo dennis way son and george r hodil the sophomores include g sander davis timothy bird don ald booster michael reich bar clay griffiths alan c eckbretn robert p hes carl mcconnell and richard lipsteine
