six upperclassmen and four freshmen will compete for 275 in prize money in the finals of the williams extempore speech contest monday the three prizes offered in the upperclass contest are of 75 50 and 25 in the fresh men contest the two prizes are of 75 and 50 the six upperclassmen selected te deum ' sung by mixed choir in their only on campus perform ance this spring the lehigh glee club joins with the sweet briar college choir for a concert in pack er memorial church at 3 p.m sun day the two groups will present zoltan kodlay's te deum and seven other selections under the auspices of the a n cleav er memorial fund soloists will be s james lewis 61 tenor waldon holl 61 bass lynne nalley soprano and jane hilton alto this major work in the combined concert of sacred music will be directed by prof robert b cutler head of the department of music prof cutler will also direct mem bers of the lehigh band and the professional musicians — 38 pieces in all selections by the 68-voice sweet briar choir will include see mixed page 7 columbia prof speaks humanism is concern of man from 17 entrants in the two pre liminary rounds held monday and wednesday are frederick b skyrms 60 alan j winters 61 robert a jablon 61 henry w enberg 11 62 michael c gennet 62 and edward t gorman 62 seven contestants were eliminat ed in monday's round and wednes day's contest narrowed the com petitors down to six the freshmen selected from nine entrants are george j hanhauser donald e mesibov duncan m payne and michael l schlain monday's contest eliminated two contestants and three more were eliminated in wednesday's com petition contest finals will be held mon day feb 29 at 7:30 p.m in the davis room of the university cen ter the six faculty members judging the finals are dr harvey a neville university provost and vice-president dr glenn j christensen dean of the college of arts and science and dr howard j b ziegler professor and head of the de partment of philosophy also dr george d harmon pro fessor of american history and head of the department of history and government dr j burke severs professor and head of the department of english and c b campbell associate dean of stu dents by jon bassett humanism implies a central and predominant concern with man dr moses hadas columbia pro fessor told a capacity audience in the osbourne room of the university center tuesday evening dr hadas author editor professor of greek and chairman of columbia's departments of greek and latin spoke on humanism and the humanities his lecture was presented by the cooperative lecture series things right for our grandfathers are not neces sarily right for use hadas said as we change our values change humanism implies that man is the measure of all things — he is always the criterion for deciding his conduct there is no external authority in human ism hadas declared that humanism always deals with the individual he referred to homer and his influence on the greeks humanism on the whole was not the dominant outlook of the greeks it was the minority idea but that one unmistakable strand under homer was quite significant i believe the greeks attained excellence by homer the professor said any person who reads the ilaid must be struck and concerned with the as serting values of the individual see achilles page 4 classicists dr moses hadas jay professor of greek at columbia and dr joseph maurer head of the department of classical languages chat before hadas humanism lecture tuesday til visit campus for bach fest ' norman thomas un 6-0331 bethlehem pa friday february 26 1960 norman thomas plans to visit the lehigh campus this spring the socialist leader — object of a four-month old controversy which followed administration thwarting of his appearance on the campus as a guest speaker — told the brown and white last night that he hopes to attend the may 22 performance of the bach fes tival in packer chapel thomas will definitely be in bethlehem that day to address the unitarian church at 11 a.m plans for his visit were announced this week by church leaders who emphasized that the invitation was ex tended early last fall before the lehigh controversy brown and w hite vol 70 — no 31 initiated — twenty-six freshmen who scored a 3.5 or higher aver age last semester were inducted into phi eta sigma freshman honor society at a banquet tuesday night guest speaker was james b hartman head of the mechanical engineering department science ; english requirements changed in arts seaton on campus to address frosh i would certainly hope that i can combine the two the church speech and bach festival attend ance i'm planning to hear the performance if at all possible he has never received any official notification of the uni versity decision not to allow him to speak as a public lec turer sponsored by delta om icron theta debate society thomas noted citing the university of michi gan wisconsin syracuse hunter and ccny as recent college speak ing dates the 75-year-old socialist commented they all ask about the lehigh affair thomas decision to attend the bach festival follows by two months a letter to the lehigh chapter to the american associa tion of university professors in which he stated i had planned to come to the bach festival again see thomas page 9 facade today at 3:10 facade an entertainment by edith sitwell will be presented by prof david greene of the english department in the asa packer room of the university center at 3:10 to day six instrumentalists will ac company the reading with the music of sir william walton coffee will be served courtesy of the univer sity center gold rush tale basis of opera by prof elkus the gold rush story of bret harte the orchestration of profes sor of music jonathan eikus and the lyrics of robert bander — these are the elements of a new opera the outcasts of poker flat scheduled for presentation in grace hall at 8:40 p.m april 16 along with these go the efforts of director constance ruys the lehigh music depart ment several female calif or - nians experienced in operatic work and musicians from new york and philadelphia the completed orchestration of the opera is now being hand-copied — a process requiring considerable time and money robert b cutler music depart ment head will play gambler john oakhurst in the one-act adaptation of the harte story female leads in the opera will be soprano dorothy renzi as piney woods mezzo-soprano alice taylor as the duchess and contralto elizabeth pharris as mother rosa soloists with the glee club com plete the cast s james lewis 61 will appear as tom simpson the innocent of sandy bar richard d jones 62 as the dealer wal don m holl 61 as uncle billy the drunkard gerald a hedges 61 frederick c monson 61 and see outcasts page 9 10 to compete for 275 in williams competition fred a seaton u.s secretary of the interior will speak at the freshman class banquet tonight at 7 in the osbourne room of the uni versity center harvey a neville university vice-president and provost will also speak faced with a deficit the freshman class was forced to move the banquet from grace hall to the osbourne room to cut down the loss the freshmen are faced with a loss because they were unable to obtain a rebate on meals not eaten by those attending the banquet they have been assured the money saved by the dining service will be put toward an extra quality meal in the future at least 350 freshmen were expected to attend originally but sales were stopped at 265 because of the switch in facilities immediately after the ban quet at approximately 9 p.m seaton will take part in a fireside chat in the drinker house lounge only those who have bought tickets to the ban quet will be permitted to at tend this discussion at 3 this afternoon seaton ar rived at a-b-e airport and was taken to the hotel bethlehem at 4:30 today he will take part in a taped interview which will be see conservation page 9 two changes in the distribution requirements for the b.a degree were announced by glenn j chris tensen dean of the college of arts and science the english requirement has been liberalized to include six hours of literature to be chosen from english literature courses greek 50 latin 51 or foreign language literature courses at the third year level that are not used to satisfy language re quirements this is in addition to the six hours of required freshman english the natural and physical sciences requirement has been changed to include one course to be chosen from math 3 math 11 or phil 14 in addition to nine hours in other scientific fields if phil 14 is chosen it cannot be used to satisfy the philosophy or religion requirement christensen said that this special ization was designed to insure that at least one course was taken in mathematics or logic
