lehigh had little trouble in de feating alfred university by a score of 21 to 0 the visitors were outweighed by the lehigh men and furnished a good try out for the important contest next saturday with two ex ceptions the lehigh squad came thru he game in good shape but one of these is considerable of a blow to the lehigh team in the second period bill hoff man veteran right guard emerged from a scrimmage hurt about the head and examination in the field house disclosed that he suffered a double fracture of the right jaw hoffman playing his fourth year of varsity foot ball was one of the most de pendable members of the team and his loss is keenly felt with the exception of storer and merrill coach baldwin started his first team mcgold rick again playing left tackle while lingle who has been out for several weeks on account of injuries took storer's place at left halfback before the end of the first half a number of sub stitutions were made so that for most of the game a second string backfield bore the brunt of the lehigh attack the superiority of the lehigh team is shown in the fact that the brown and white made twenty-five first downs to two by alfred one of the latter com ing through scrimmage and the other by a forward pass in the closing minutes of play the le high attack was confined almost entirely to straight football but three forward passes being at tempted two of which were successful the work of the lehigh re serve backs showed up particu larly well lingle was knocked out in the second period and had to be carried from the field but before his injury made a num ber of sensational gains in slashes off tackle and end runs from a kick formation although playing in hard luck for the last two seasons in this game he showed his old speed and dash pryor was unusually successful on a double pass in which he carried the ball time and again for large gains around right end with his knack of sliding around the end and reversing his field at just the right moment he was a hard man tor the alfred sec ondary defense to stop substi tuting for greer at fullback le vitz gave a fine exhibition of line plunging captam springsteen won the toss and elected to receive gardner kicked off to jacobs who fumbled but recovered on his own twenty yard line le high was penalized fifteen yards on the next play lingle fumb led a bad pass but recovered on the one yard line lingle then kicked to midfield alfred was forced to punt but regained possession of the ball when le win fumbled on his twelve yard line on the fourth down with alfred in possession of the ball on lehigh's eighteen yard line gardner attempted a goal from placement from the twenty-six yard mark which went low rushes brought the ball to mid field where the brown and white team was held for downs alfred could not make the dis t&nces ho lehigh regained pos session of the ball from a high punt by gardner on their own forty yard line lingle and greer brought the ball to the thirty yard line lewin sent a pretty drop kick sailing through the goal posts from the forty yard mark alfred kicked off to the thirty-five yard line jacobs and continued on page i column i the brown and white house party over and the fair visitors returned to their homes the three happy days of excitement are but a pleasant memory of the past the long weeks of preparation of setting the houses in order cleaning up and making conditions pleasant tor the function ended in the ar rival of the young ladies friday afternoon the bethlehem sta tions were crowded with beauti ful girls at the arrival of every train and more than one young man in search of his friends walked up to a stranger with woi'ds of welcome only to find that he had made a mistake and to find some one else come up and walk away with the girl he had thought was his own the crowd finally straightened out however the girls carried to their destination and house party had begun back at the houses introduc tions were made with the young ladies despairing of ever remem bering the names of all who were presented to them ad journment was soon called how over to dress for dinner after which the dances of the evening were in order the inter-fraternity dance in drown hall was the first l%£ge dance of the week-end the committee favored decorating the second floor with palms rather than the usual elaborate decorations the well-known louis cohen orchestra had been engaged to render suitable mu bic and they proceeded to en liven the evening with strains of dance music the gathering was great and the few stags who were present had every op portunity of having a good time although the dances were rath er long all had a very enjoyable time dancing to the excellent music a halt was called at two o clock and all descended to the first floor where refreshment were served saturday morning classes were a hardship for those who had attended the dance the night before and the few or no hours of sleep that morning did not keep many of the men from doz ing off in classes the girls were envied in not being required to rise until time for lunch the alfred football game claimed all saturday afternoon end could the stadium have spoken it would surely have said that the young ladies were the prettiest ever seen within its folds the incident when cap tain springsteen earned the op ponent quarterback in one hand ly the back of his uniform was enjoyed by all a tea dance in drown hall followed the game given under the direction of the inter-fraternity council here dancing was in order from five until seven when all were more than ready for the evening meal the arcadia dance that even ing was the next affair with a gathering as large as the even ing before in spite of the fact that some of the houses ware running private dances the stag line was particularly large and cutting in was carried on in a large scale the length of the dances this evening were much shorter which was great ly appreciated during the rest periods punch and cake were served on the first floor the music was even better than the night before with the same or chestra in attendance the dance broke up on the dot of twelve many of the houses car ried on informal dancing on re turning until the chaperones cal led a halt or the participants were too tired to dance any long er dr jock sutherland closed his march field career as coach of the lafayette college foot ball eleven on saturday in a whirl of glory the maroon warriors handed to the univer sity of dayton eleven a 45 to 0 defeeat enabling the tall scotch man to finish his fifth season at lafayette without a march field defeat brown surprised harvard by a late rally which made them victor over the crim son team by a 20 to 7 score these victories by lehigh's op ponents indicate that the last two brown and white games are certain to be two hard matches the off-tackle darts and the line bucks of the lafayette backfield last week in philadelphia so did the dayton line crumble before the steamroller tactics of the ; maroon team dayton outweigh ed made a determined and plucky fight to hold the lafay ette team but their efforts were in vain seven times did the la fayette men march down the gridiron several times it was from midfield that . the attack was inaugurated but oftener it was from her own territory that lafayette got under way only once in the entire game was la fayette forced to punt that in the second period when the scrubs had replaced the varsity men continued on l'aqf t column 4 just as the university of pennsylvania was unable to stop brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday november 20 1923 pep luncheon on thursday big cheering practice on friday get ready for that lafayette invasion on saturday

lehigh had little trouble in de feating alfred university by a score of 21 to 0 the visitors were outweighed by the lehigh men and furnished a good try out for the important contest next saturday with two ex ceptions the lehigh squad came thru he game in good shape but one of these is considerable of a blow to the lehigh team in the second period bill hoff man veteran right guard emerged from a scrimmage hurt about the head and examination in the field house disclosed that he suffered a double fracture of the right jaw hoffman playing his fourth year of varsity foot ball was one of the most de pendable members of the team and his loss is keenly felt with the exception of storer and merrill coach baldwin started his first team mcgold rick again playing left tackle while lingle who has been out for several weeks on account of injuries took storer's place at left halfback before the end of the first half a number of sub stitutions were made so that for most of the game a second string backfield bore the brunt of the lehigh attack the superiority of the lehigh team is shown in the fact that the brown and white made twenty-five first downs to two by alfred one of the latter com ing through scrimmage and the other by a forward pass in the closing minutes of play the le high attack was confined almost entirely to straight football but three forward passes being at tempted two of which were successful the work of the lehigh re serve backs showed up particu larly well lingle was knocked out in the second period and had to be carried from the field but before his injury made a num ber of sensational gains in slashes off tackle and end runs from a kick formation although playing in hard luck for the last two seasons in this game he showed his old speed and dash pryor was unusually successful on a double pass in which he carried the ball time and again for large gains around right end with his knack of sliding around the end and reversing his field at just the right moment he was a hard man tor the alfred sec ondary defense to stop substi tuting for greer at fullback le vitz gave a fine exhibition of line plunging captam springsteen won the toss and elected house party over and the fair visitors returned to their homes the three happy days of excitement are but a pleasant memory of the past the long weeks of preparation of setting the houses in order cleaning up and making conditions pleasant tor the function ended in the ar rival of the young ladies friday afternoon the bethlehem sta tions were crowded with beauti ful girls at the arrival of every train and more than one young man in search of his friends walked up to a stranger with woi'ds of welcome only to find that he had made a mistake and to find some one else come up and walk away with the girl he had thought was his own the crowd finally straightened out however the girls carried to their destination and house party had begun back at the houses introduc tions were made with the young ladies despairing of ever remem bering the names of all who were presented to them ad journment was soon called how over to dress for dinner after which the dances of the evening were in order the inter-fraternity dance in drown hall was the first l%£ge dance of the week-end the committee favored decorating the second floor with palms rather than the usual elaborate decorations the well-known louis cohen orchestra had been engaged to render suitable mu bic and they proceeded to en liven the evening with strains of dance music the gathering was great and the few stags who were present had every op portunity of having a good time although the dances were rath er long all had a very enjoyable time dancing to the excellent music a halt was called at two o clock and all descended to the first floor where refreshment were served saturday morning classes were a hardship for those who had attended the dance the night before and the few or no hours of sleep that morning did not keep many of the men from doz ing off in classes the girls were envied in not being required to rise until time for lunch the alfred football game claimed all saturday afternoon end could the stadium have spoken it would surely have said that the young ladies were the prettiest ever seen within its folds the incident when cap tain springsteen earned the op ponent quarterback in one hand ly the back of his uniform was enjoyed by all a tea dance in drown hall followed the game given under the direction of the inter-fraternity council here dancing was in order from five until seven when all were more than ready for the evening meal the arcadia dance that even ing was the next affair with a gathering as large as the even ing before in spite of the fact that some of the houses ware running private dances the stag line was particularly large and cutting in was carried on in a large scale the length of the dances this evening were much shorter which was great ly appreciated during the rest periods punch and cake were served on the first floor the music was even better than the night before with the same or chestra in attendance the dance broke up on the dot of twelve many of the houses car ried on informal dancing on re turning until the chaperones cal led a halt or the participants were too tired to dance any long er dr jock sutherland closed his march field career as coach of the lafayette college foot ball eleven on saturday in a whirl of glory the maroon warriors handed to the univer sity of dayton eleven a 45 to 0 defeeat enabling the tall scotch man to finish his fifth season at lafayette without a march field defeat brown surprised harvard by a late rally which made them victor over the crim son team by a 20 to 7 score these victories by lehigh's op ponents indicate that the last two brown and white games are certain to be two hard matches the off-tackle darts and the line bucks of the lafayette backfield last week in philadelphia so did the dayton line crumble before the steamroller tactics of the ; maroon team dayton outweigh ed made a determined and plucky fight to hold the lafay ette team but their efforts were in vain seven times did the la fayette men march down the gridiron several times it was from midfield that . the attack was inaugurated but oftener it was from her own territory that lafayette got under way only once in the entire game was la fayette forced to punt that in the second period when the scrubs had replaced the varsity men continued on l'aqf t column 4 just as the university of pennsylvania was unable to stop
