see inspection page 6 prizes offered for sr essays during the next few months seniors will again compete for the lucrative williams senior essay prizes the contest which was estab lished by prof edward h wil liams of the class of 1875 has been using the present plan of awards since 1927 three prizes are awarded in each of five fields business administra tion english philosophy psychology and history history also comprises government and international rela tions the first prizes are 150 while the second and third prizes are 100 and 50 a committee will judge the essays which must be submitted by april 15 on the excellence of thought plan development argument and composition founder's day exercises last sunday afternoon in packer memorial church dr catton editor of american heritage delivered his address moment of crisis to a capacity audience of lehigh seniors graduate candidates for special degrees and awards faculty and guests in the 71-year-old univer sity church during the annual observance honoring the founder of the university asa packer dr martin d whitaker introduced the guest speaker after paying a tribute to the founder asa pack er he observed was noted for doing everything a little bit more thoroughly than was expected this example is one which all should heed and profit by he advised dr catton criticized the usual commencement address as one which too often put the audience to sleep he characterized it as one which admonishes our generation has made a sad mess of things and it is the responsibility of yours to cor rect this situation this was not his purpose he stated for he believes that man is a free agent and as such can be master of his destiny the generation of this graduating class faces a great welter of sam's ' hup hollander voted ugliest with 225 freshman contacting by 30 so cial fraternities will get under way tomorrow afternoon at 3 this marks the beginning of a nine-week period during which fraternity men will be searching for prospective pledges contacting will be permitted between the hours of 3 and 7:30 p.m on weekdays and be tween 1 and 5 p.m oh saturdays and sundays however no contacting will be allowed on saturday oct 18 par ents day saturday oct 25 houseparty ; saturday , nov 15 buffalo game saturday nov 22 lafayette game and sunday dec 14 christmas vespers during contacting fraternity men will visit interested freshmen in the freshman residence halls or private homes should the freshmen be a town student lists of freshman dining hour assignments have been given to each fraternity to prevent oon fusion according to^ifc . . ', . carl schier ifc president said in a letter to the freshman class at no time should any freshman neglect see ugly man page 7 votes bought at a penny apiece hup was sixth with only 846 votes but that was before ugly man contest officials discovered that the sammys had taken much of the money their candidate re ceived to mrs moravec's office after the office was opened it was found that there was an addi tional 216.56 deposited in hup's name he growled as he was told the final results the alpha phi omega contest netfed campus chest a total of 829.44 which was almost double the 494.71 collected last year in 1956 the contest netted 294.13 with former director of resi dence halls philip r woodroff lead sigma alpha mu's bruce hup hollander who had everyone from the bethlehem police to the cedar crest coeds proclaiming his ugliness has been chosen as the biggest beast of them all but for a few hours anyway it appeared as if the effort of the police car's sirens and the comeliness of the maidens hadn't convinced enough persons that this man was the beastliest of all the original count gave the gryphon's dave wismer the title wismer was one of the ghouls frosh sought toprotect with water balloons when the sammys and their friends went campaigning last wednesday the first results sent to the brown and white gave wismer a total 16,378 a financial whiz maybe here is an actual footnote to registration first frosh looking up from form : what does this word curriculum mean second frosh it means the course you're taking i guess first frosh how do you spell business o ryan's first first down — john o'ryan picks up a first down for the engineers during the first quarter of play john paced the lehigh backs by picking up 33 yards in 11 carries lehigh university brown and white un 6-0331 rotc program debate topic tomorrow at 8 vol 70 — no 6 tuesday oct 14 1958 students will express their opinions on compulsory rotc tomor row at an oxford union debate to be held at 8 p.m in the multi-purpose room of the university center sponsored by delta omicron theta lehigh's honorary debate society the oxford union will be on the topic resolved that this house looks with favor upon the abolition of basic rotc as a re quirement for graduation the oxford union debate style provides organized debate while at the same time giving the audience a chance to express themselves each side giv^es an opening speech stating its position on the question following the opening statements individual members of the audience may give one to two minute speeches stating their opinion on the ques tion to be recognized for a speech a student must submit his name to the secretary of the union during one of the opening speeches however during any speech a member of the audi ence may interrupt the speaker to ask a question or challenge the speakers remarks following the speeches from the audience the chairman will recog nize three questions on each side of the topic by members of the audience the question will be an swered by opening speakers the discussion will be closed by single speeches from each side im mediately following the last speech the chairman will call for a
