Hessel's shooting for success As a little league basketball player, sophomore forward Sara Hessel's dream was to play Division I basketball when she grew up. As the only player in Fairfield High School history to score 1,000 points, the Fairfield, CT native's wish quickly becoming a reality. While she averaged only seven minutes of game time last season, the six foot hoopster has successfully made her way and a name for herself into the starting lineup of the Mountain Hawk program this season. While Hessel admits she was unsure of her role as a freshmen, during a recent interview she assured me that she is fully aware of her responsibility. "As a young player, you have to keep positive and remind yourself that you're a good player and one day you'll get your chanCe to prove it," said Hessel. "Since I know the program and my role in it, I have a greater level of confidence in myself this season." After a post season meeting with coach Troyan last year, Hessel was advised that she needed to increase her strength and speed to become a key player in the Mountain Hawks' game plan. "Over the summer, I lifted weights and ran almost everyday," Hessel said. "Just like most people, I don't like to run, but I knew if I came back stronger, I would get a shot at a starting position." During preseason camp, coach Troyan said she saw a much improved player, who made the commitment to get better. "Her off season investment has produced great dividends this season," coach Troyan said. "Sara has earned her place into the starting lineup." In the Mountain Hawks past five games, Hessel has been "the woman" averaging over 13 points a game. Recently, she shattered her career high scoring record when she put up 20 boards against Yale on January 3 in front of more than 30 of her friends and family. Her old record was 14 points, which she posted at the Florida International Holiday Classic in Miami against William & Mary on December 29. Earlier in the season, Hessel was only averaging six points. "For some reason, my shots were just falling at Yale," she said. "I was nervous playing in front of my family and friends, but it felt great to go home and perform well." Coach Troyan said although Hessel was a little slow going in the first few games of the season, she said Hessel has come into her own as one of the starting forwards on the Mountain Hawk squad. "She is a steady player and because of this, it gives us a lot of flexibility, which makes it tough for our opponents to defend," coach Troyan said. Hessel said staying positive and being a team player is one thing she learned from her first coach—her dad and her role mod- els-her parents who helped her last season. "My parents have always been very supportive of me," she said. "They taught me, my broth ers, and sister that is important to have good sportsmanship, play as a team, be competitive and aggressive." She said that although it is important for all of the players to do their best on the court, one of her game strategies is to keep the team pumped up and ready to go at anytime. "I try to find a way to keep us up," she said. "Of course you want to be "on" every night, but stepping up when you are called upon is very important." Troyan said she believes that Hessel is a developing leader not only on the court but also in the classroom. "She has strong leadership qualities and as a Dean's List student, she is one of Lehigh's brightest athletes," Troyan said. "Sara is truly a quality person," Troyan said. -by LaTanya Dunn Sports Communications Hoop Notes -Junior center Alexis Bevington was named to the Patriot League Honor Roll after scoring her second double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) of the season against Army on Tuesday in Lehigh's 63- 49 victory over the Lady Knights. -Lehigh (9-5) is off to its best start since the 1995-96 season, which was head coach Sue Troyan's first year at the helm. -Three of Lehigh's players are ranked in the league's Top-20 in scoring.
