DID YOU KNOW Lehigh's shutout of Fordham Saturday was the Brown and White defense's first since they blanked Davidson 47-0 on Sept. 12,1987, at Taylor Stadium, 96 games ago. Maybe it was short-circuiting because of the numbers showing on it. Patriot League unplugged? For the first time in 96 games - since the 1987 season opener — Lehigh's defense pitched a shutout and the Brown and White won this crucial matchup, 17-0, to remain on top in the Patriot League. The lackluster outing was still good enough to beat the 4-5-1 Rams, who had won only two league games in five seasons prior to this fall. Senior quarterback Bob Aylsworth fumbled twice when he was pressured in the pocket and junior tailback Rabih Abdullah was stripped on Lehigh's second possession. It's said championships are won with defense, and the Lehigh defense, torched for 44 points and 515 yards rushing last week at Massachusetts, took its frustrations out on Fordham. "This is a tremendous feeling," head coach Kevin Higgins said. Higgins was the defensive coordinator before succeeding Hank Small. "Our defensive kids were hurt by last week's game, and our talk all week was about that. Our defensive players and coaches were on a mission because of last week." The defense can make a highlight film of its big plays. Fordham received one last . Lehigh gift (the Brown and White fumbled the ball away four times Saturday) when Abdullah fumbled into the arms of Rams' cornerback Tahir Rivers (36) had a 41-yard interception return late in the first half. Joe Ryan Dave Gaffney at the 21-yard line one play after a Fordham missed field goal. This led to Lehigh's finest defensive stand. Even with four chances from the Lehigh 4, Fordham failed to score. An illegal procedure call on an interior lineman put the Rams back to the 9. On fourth down, nickel back Saundrell Davison blitzed, forcing Ram quarterback Joe Moorhead to throw hard and above tight end Randy Zingo. Lehigh didn't fumble on its third possession, and Abdullah capped a seven-play, 63-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run off left tackle. The key to the drive was a 31- yard reception by Brian Klingerman, who went over 2,000 yards in receiving for his career. Fordham threatened to tie the score, moving to Lehigh's 17. But defensive end Mike Taluskie hurried Moorhead into a bad throw, PATRIOT LEAGUE STANDINGS Institution League Overall This Week LEHIGH 3-0 6-3 vs. Holy Cross 1:00 Bucknell 3-1 6-3 at Colgate 1:00 Lafayette 2-1 3-5-1 vs. Fordham 1:00 Fordham 2-2 4-5-1 at Lafayette 1:00 Holy Cross 0-3 1-8 at Lehigh 1:00 Colgate 0-3 0-9 vs. Bucknell 1:00 Last Week: Lehigh 17, Fordham 0 Bucknell 21, Holy Cross 7 Lafayette 35, Colgate 9 and Bob Hagan's 36-yard field goal try was blocked by junior Tahir Rivers. Rivers came virtually untouched off the right corner. "I used to do that (block kicks) in high school, so it feels good to know I can still do it," the 5-foot, 7-inch cornerback said. Lehigh responded with a 21- yard field goal by senior Mike Swartz for a 10-0 lead with 47 seconds left before intermission. With Fordham's offense sputtering more and more with each passing series, Lehigh's touchdown on its first possession of the second half sealed the win. Junior Jason Streeter and freshman Brian Baker caught third- down passes of 30 and 26 yards, respectively. Freshman Deron Braswell, who is making a strong case for league rookie of the year honors, hauled in a 10-yard TD pass from Aylsworth. "They call the plays and I run the patterns," Braswell said as he tried to downplay his importance to Lehigh's offense as a third receiver. Braswell grabbed six catches for 85 yards while senior All-American flanker Brian Klingerman caught six passes for 87 yards. Aylsworth finished with 21 completions on 34 attempts for 273 yards and one touchdown, despite being sacked seven times. He was named to the league's honor roll for his achievements.
