The senior 190- pounder scored a superior decision over Pat McKay of Michigan, 22-3, to give his team a 19-14 lead going into the final bout, and a 4:14 fall over Bob Hackbart of Wisconsin to provide an 18-15 advantage after nine bouts. Heavyweights Eric Klasson of Michigan and Mike Euker of Wisconsin were too much for Pat Brown of the Engineers, however, and neither lead stood up. Brown, after being disqualified against Michigan at 6:51 for stalling, bowed 3-1 two days later to Euker. Heavyweight wasn't the only trouble spot in the Lehigh lineup, however, as Coach Thad Turner is quick to point out while taking some ofthe responsibility off his heavyweight's back. "You win, lose or tie as a team," he says. "The biggest guy just happens to wrestle last." In Lehigh's case the middle portion ofthe lineup must share as much of the blame as any one individual. Only Tommy Bold (150) put any points on the board as he battled two very strong visitors. He drew 2-2 with Mark Pearson of Michigan and then (Continued on Page 2) Blue's 27-Pt. Night Brings Victory Over Mar 1st Five Charlie Blue's 27-point performance led Lehigh's basketball team to a 70-68 victory over Marist College in the first round of the Bankers Tournament at Fairfield, Conn., and the Engineers pushed favored Fairfield to the limit in the tourney title final before bowing, 67-66. The triumph over Marist, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., followed a 57-56 edge over Susquehanna at Stabler Center and gave the Engineers a 5-game winning streak to take into the championship contest. Coach Brian Hill's young, rebuilt squad.has fared well in the early going and will take a 6-and-4 record into the balance of its schedule which includes 14 East Coast Conference contests and one non-league test. Marist, which took Drexel into overtime before losing in its final outing before the tournament at Fairfield, couldn't handle the Brown and White with Blue, of East Orange, N.J., pumping in his 27 tallies. Lehigh led 44-36 at halftime and built this to a 65-48 margin with 7:22 remaining before Marist staged a surge of its own. The New York staters pulled to within two, with eight seconds left and had an opportunity to tie only to have Tom Chance, a Lehigh freshman from the Bronx, N.Y., reject a shot at the CHARLIE BLUE . . .27-point night buzzer to safeguard the triumph. Host Fairfield, an overtime loser to Princeton before moving into the tournament, had to fight for its life in the final minutes as Lehigh came up with the strong stretch drive cutting a sizeable deficit to one point at 65-64 in the last minute. Brian Collins, of Manville, N.J., had two big foul conversions in this final push, Robert Bell of Washington, D.C., added a jumper and Blue stuck in a rebound with 43 seconds remaining. Two Fairfield free throws interrupted the drive, for a 67-64 advantage, before (Continued on Page 2) Brian Collins, of Lehigh, Honored By Conference Brian Collins, Lehigh junior center from Manville, N. J., was chosen East Coast Conference western division basketball player-of-the-week earlier this month. Gordon Austin, of American University, was the ECC east division player-of-the-week and Olof Jonsson, a native of Sweden playing for Hofstra, was rookie-of-the-week. Collins, Most Valuable Player of the Albright Invitational in Reading, Pa., led Lehigh to victories over Dartmouth, 46-41, and host Albright, 68-62, as he totalled 25 points (7 of 11 from the field and 11 of 13 free throws), 16 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Brian kept up his fine play with eight points, 10 rebounds, BRIAN COLLINS . . .honored by ECC two assists and three blocks in the Engineers' 72-55 non- conference win over Lycoming.
