Engineers Place 6 Grapplers During West Coast Tourney Lehigh matmen finished sixth in the NCAA tournament at Oregon State last weekend, placing six of eight wrestlers but failing to take an individual championship. Coach Thad Turner's squad had 56'/4 points and was edged for fifth position by Arizona State's 56V2 total. Engineer grapplers wrestled 40 bouts and won 26 of them. Darryl Burley, a national champion in 1979, placed second at 134 this year to Randy Lewis of Iowa, the 1979 winner at 126. The Lehigh star, a sophomore from Pemberton, N.J., led Lewis early in their title finale but fell to defeat on the strength of two near-falls and time advantage in the third period as the Iowa ace dominated the last four minutes of the bout. Other Lehigh place-winners were Colin Kilrain of Braintree, Mass., third at 177; Rich Santoro of Bethlehem, Pa., sixth at 118; Mike Brown of Bethlehem, seventh at 190; Denis Reed of Enola, Pa., seventh at 142, and Jim Reilly of North Wales, Pa., eighth at 158. Only 126-pounder Steve Bastianelli of Georgetown, Del. and heavyweight Drew Keiser of Sinking Spring, _ Pa., failed to earn one of the top eight places in his division. Kilrain's loss in the semi-finals to eventual winner Ed Banach, of Iowa, came during a bout which many observers declared the most exciting of the tourney. The Engineer matman had things all his own way in the early going, piling up a 9-3 lead and time advantage, before being banged hard to the mat during a four- point maneuver by Banach. He was stunned, needed injury time, and eventually dropped a 12-11 verdict. There were in- COLIN KILRAIN dications he'd have to go to the sidelines with a concussion, and miss the remainder of the tourney, but he came back one day later to win a pair of consolation bouts and nail down his No. 3 finish. Brown, attempting to become the first Lehigh star ever to place in four national tournaments, achieved that goal although he was upset by Noel Loban of Clemson (the eventual winner) in the semis. He also dropped a consolation round decision but (Continued on Page 2) Top Ten Teams Pts. Iowa 110% Okla. State 87 Iowa State 81% Oklahoma 67V2 Arizona St 56V2 ■ LEHIGH 56y4 Wisconsin 55 North Car.
